Canadian Academy May 2020 Distance Learning in Action Keeping Us Connected Schools are social institutions-- we love learning with and from our students-- the energy and activity is contagious! Feedback is a critical piece of learning. Indeed, John Hattie, a noted educator from New Zealand, states that feedback has a significant effect on student learning and has been described as “the most powerful single moderator that enhances achievement”. But how? In our Distance Learning Program, what non-traditional ways do students give and receive feedback? One way is through the use of Flipgrid, an online tool that enables students to record and share short videos that offer feedback and suggestions to their peers. Unlike a traditional classroom discussion, Flipgrid can be reviewed repeatedly and students can gain a clearer understanding of the feedback given. G10 Humanities In our Grade 10 Humanities class, each student represented a country at an imaginary Model United Nations conference. After researching their chosen country's position on climate change and the Paris Agreement, they then responded to a resolution on climate change. Students wrote and then shared their opening speech through Flipgrid--- and just as importantly, gave and received feedback from their peers and teacher. Always learning... How do teachers find out about the various apps and tools available? Our teachers are active learners! Many of us take advantage of a variety of webinars that offer overviews and training for apps such as Flipgrid, Perusall, as well as the wide variety of tools available through Google Classroom. Additionally, we learn from each other through team meetings, weekly staff meetings, as well as from the support we receive through our tech team. Canadian Academy continues to keep students and teachers connected while maintaining high expectations. Distance Learning in Action
