A brief history of radio

What is radio?

•Radio is a type of broadcasting mainly using news, music, entertainment and talk shows as its primary source of use.

In the beginning

• Radio was first broadcast in Britain in 1922, by the BBC ( British Broadcasting Company (named at the time), it was set up by the government so they could control it and monitor it at all times ( they still do today).

The BBC • The BBC’s first broadcasting show was BBC radio 1 and they then

introduced three more stations

• BBC home which first aired in 1939 and is now BBC radio 4.

• BBC light which first aired on the 29 July 1945 and is now branded as BBC radio 2.

• BBC radio third was the next show to be realised by the BBC and first aired on the 29 September 1946 and this is now what as known as BBC radio 3.

Pirate radio stations .

• In the 1960’s pirate radio stations where introduced and the first was called ‘Radio Caroline (after the boat)’ this introduced POP music and other genres like Rock and Roll. Another famous pirate radio was called radio Luxemburg.

During the war

• Radio was used a lot during both the great war and world war II, it was used to communicate back home and also to Europe, this was a good strategy as all radio communication were listened into by the government.
