Purpose of this assignment
People want to be part of something great and work on something bigger than themselves.
Prioritizing people means offering opportunities for employee development, providing public
recognition, promoting from within, and rewarding great work. When people see that they are
being put first they are happy, enriched, satisfied, and they derive meaning from their work.
Leading with purpose opens the door to more innovation and creativity. Engaging employees
and viewing them as collaborators, provides people with the authority to innovate.
This means challenging people to think, rewarding employees who take risks, providing clear
guidance, and recognizing people who overcome challenges.
Scenario
Nelson College London
You have been appointed as the service manager of a CA Limited. You have been asked to assist
xyz Ltd with its staff recruitment, selection and retention procedures.
The staff are demotivated the way they recruit new staff. Recruiting, deploying and retaining the
right people who can deliver this 'something special' is the task of the Human Resources (HR)
department. Its work involves supplying and managing the human inputs that will fulfil XYZ
overall mission:
In areas such as health and safety and employment the organisation appears not to work within
specific regulations for their industry and ethical frameworks. The organisation must maintain good
reputation and also take account of the views of people in their communities on a whole range of
issues such as environment and other ways in which the organisation affects people’s quality of
life.
By valuing the distinctive qualities that each worker brings to a job, xyz Limited can generate a
'feel good factor' among employees. This gives them the confidence to add that extra value for each
customer. XYZ Limited’s stance on diversity also promotes family-friendly working patterns for
both male and female employees as well as anti-bullying or harassment policies. This approach is
supported by a commitment to training and development.
Different leadership styles are being tried to see which fits. The staff retention rate has reduced.
They are not being adapted to the particular demands of the situation, the particular requirements of
the people involved and the particular challenges facing the organisation.
The most effective leaders can move among these styles, adopting the one that meets the needs of
the moment.
Staff spend a considerable part of their lives at work, so it is not surprising that they expect to be
rewarded and satisfied with the job that they do.. Motivation is concerned with why people do
things as well as what drives them to behave in a particular way. Understanding what motivates
individuals is important in work place. Research suggests that motivated employees are happier at
work. They get more satisfaction from their work, are absent less often, tend to be more loyal and
work with enthusiasm. This encourages them to contribute more to the development of the
organisation.
Managers do not use team meeting to solve problems, build good working relationships and review
how the team is progressing against objectives.
Managers do not involve the whole team in planning its development for the future and help staff
to realise how much they can learn from one another. They do not use team appraisals to develop
the skills and improve the performance of a team as a whole.
Nelson College London
At the moment the mangers are unable to assess the development needs of individuals.
Needs assessments enable us to ground justification for development of a training program within
the real world needs of our associates or employees. Imagine the reaction of business,
organizational, or institutional stakeholders if an unecessary and potentially expensive training
program was developed that did not fulfill the needs of staff. Needs assessments save money, time,
and increase the potential for value in the outcomes training efforts.
Needs assessments , ideal at this point in time in order to prepare an adequate strategy for staff
support and development. The following document presents an approach to conducting a needs
assessment :Identify areas of need, needs assessment instruments and strategies for implementation
of needs assessment.
All employees receive core training to do their job effectively and safely. A full annual appraisal
identifies personal goals and training needs.
