INTRODUCTION
David,
I can now say with some certainty that we have been able to complete our preliminary survey o the industrial and
technological capabilities o the local Clan militaries. I have also been able to conrm that the recent disruptions in the Clan
Homeworldswhatever their nature washave indeed severed all communications and trade between the worlds o the
Pentagon and Kerensky Cluster, and the eight Inner Sphere Clans (including the Exiled Wolves and Nova Cats in that count). We are still awaiting word rom the most distant operatives that we dispatched to the Deep Periphery, but I am condent that
their ndings will urther reinorce what we are seeing on this end o things: the Homeworlds have indeed ousted their invader
brothers or reasons we can only guess at.
That said, it appears that the local Clans have turned toward upgrading and expanding their local inrastructure, now that
they have been cut o rom the more secure caches and production acilities o their original enclaves, and the pace is close to
rantic. Whether earing predations by one another, or retribution rom the Homeworldsor perhaps even rom the nations o the
Inner Sphereour Clan neighbors are struggling to bring a number o heretoore experimental technologies and designs into
production to strengthen their war-battered toumans. This has orced them to look to many acilities in their territories that were
only partially brought up to Clan specs (i at all).
Attached are thirteen noteworthy experim ental and prototype designs the various Clans have been working on most recently.
Most are actually in battleeld-ready ormtestament to a mentality that universally believes in doing nothing halwaybut
have yet to enter mainstream production due to strained supply lines, process renements, or various other disruptions. You
should nd many o these enlightening with respect to what weapons and concepts the Clans are most ac tively exploring. I know
I certainly have!
A more extensive analysis should be on your desk by next week. Until then, David, take care!
Sincerely,
General Albrecht Ho, RAF/DMI, 16 November 3081

How to Use tHis Book
The Mechs, combat vehicles, ProtoMechs, ghters, and battle armor described in Experimental Technical Readout: Clans provide players with a
sampling o the various custom designs that have arisen in the technical divisions o the military manuacturers among the Inner Sphere Clans. The
designs eatured in this book reect limited-run prototypes and one-os that have yet to reach ull actory productionand perhaps never will.
The rules or using these units in BattleTech game play can be ound in Total Warfare, while the rules or their construction can be ound in
TechManual. However, the experimental nature o these designs also draws upon the Experimental-level rules presented in Tactical Operations.
Thus, none o the units eatured in this volume are considered tournament legal, and their use in introductory games is discouraged. Furthermore,
the extreme rarity o these machines is such that none o them should occur in a BattleTech campaign as a chance encounter, but the capture or
destruction o any one o these prototypes could be potential objective or BattleTech scenarios, tracks and role-playing adventures.

TheCougar-XR(Experimental Ret) appears to be a concept machine the
e Falcons recently began toying with. Though it is based on the rame o the
ugarOmniMech, the extent o this ret is so extreme that our intelligenceeves it to be incapable o employing modular, pod-mounted weaponry.
one instance, or example, Falcon technicians were observed having to
mantle several components o a misring missile launcher beore the
apon itsel could be detached rom its mounta process that took over an
ur in the repair bays at Sudetens ret wing o Olivetti Weaponry.
At a glance, the Cougar almost looks like a Land-Air Mech, andeed it was rumors o Clan-made LAMs that drew our attention to this
elopment. Ater all, reports o ailed Jade Falcon LAMs on Huntress during
nal days o the Clan war led many to believe the Falconsand their
ow Clansmenconsidered the concept a dead-end. Thus, a resumption
uch a possible new Clan LAM unit came as some surprise. In truth, closer
pection revealed that the Cougar-XR was no ghter-BattleMech hybrid,a standard Mech built around the added lit capabilities o a partial
g system. Using ordinary jump jets or a Mech its size, the Cougar-XR can
or an additional sixty meters per leap in standard atmosphere, gaining
ost the same mobility as it might otherwise achieve with improved jump
or the same overall tonnage. The additional cooling capabilities o theg system, however, provides a bonus that improved jets cannot deliver
viding the Cougar-XR the ability to launch a powerul alpha strike whilecuting a ull jump, all at negligible heat.
The Cougars weapons and armor are also enhanced. Its right armunts an extended-range pulse laser that oers more accurate energy
mage than the conventional Clan ER medium laser, at virtually the
me range. Twin, teen-tube LRM racks in the side torsos provide long-
ge support re potential, with the enhanced accuracy o the Clans
erimental Artemis V re-control system. Protecting this entire chassis are
en tons o laser-reective armor, likely installed based on the calculated
e that a Mech so light and so maneuverable will likely draw more re
m energy-based weapons such as pulse lasers and particle cannons than
m ammo-hungry ballistics better used on heavier, harder prey.
Making room or all o these modications clearly challenged even the
ns engineering eciency, but nowhere is this more apparent than in the
a-cramped cockpit system the Cougar-XRemploys. Undoubtedly based
nner Sphere small cockpits, the Clan version takes the notoriously tight
nes o their BattleMech control systems and makes them downright
ustrophobic. This saves another ton o weight, but impairs even the
hard-trained Clan MechWarriors unortunate enough to be assigned to
one o these machines.
Overall, the technologies used in the Cougar-XRs design appear to be
viable, especially given reports that many o the experimental technologies
it employs may soon be entering the mainstream as the Jihad winds down.
Nevertheless, less than a handul o these prototypes have been seen in
the eld to date. It thus remains unclear i the Olivetti actories in the Jade
Falcon Occupation Zone will be upgraded to produce this particular model
in the uture, or something merely based on these principles.

Echoing the political and social amalgamation with the
dent Rasalhagian population that has become so central
their non-military eorts, Clan Ghost Bears engineers have
parently begun working to integrate Inner Sphere technologies
o their military orces. At an R&D acility attached to the Bergan
tories on Alshain, a small number o second-line BattleMechs
e been set aside or use as experimental test-beds. One o the
t ully operational results o this eort, debuting in 3075, was
Ursus-PR (Prototype Ret).
Based on the chassis o a rst-generation Ursus, the Ursus-s built or close-range combat, either as a result o the Bears
periences with urban resistance in the ormer Rasalhague
public, or perhaps with the idea o deploying Mechs like these to
ensive commands. It is also built to be a pack hunter, employing
proved C3 computer technology likely derived rom ormer
mStar parts stockpiles. The integrated C3 units can network the
geting and sensor data o up to six Ursus-PRs, granting themability to coordinate in even the most densely packed cities.
erestingly enough, the Bears have built only ve o these
chines to date, demonstrating their preerence or Clan-style
anization at the expense o what would be a more optimum
o the C3i equipment.) A combined team o Rasalhagian andost Bear engineers evidently smoothed out any difculties
ing rom the use o Spheroid tech in an otherwise Clan design,
he Ursus-PRs seen while undergoing trials demonstrated ewns o malunction.
The weaponry carried by this design is cutting-edge or Clan
hnology, but not exac tly overpowering. Two heavy ProtoMech-
led autocannons mounted in the right arm are useul against
hter Mechs, vehicles, or battle armor, but would hardly deter
vier Mechs, and these are backed up by a pair o torso-
unted improved heavy medium lasers, which deliver greater
uracy than older heavy medium lasers, but carry a signicant
plosive risk in the event o an armor breach. For additional
power against conventional inantry, the Ursus-PR roundsits weapons with a trio o anti-personnel Gauss ries, and an
ended-range amer. Taken together, these weapons give the
us-PR an eective kill zone o over 200 meters, but the Mech is
itively murderous at ranges o ninety meters or less.
Protecting the Ursus-PR, the Bears are using standardClan-made erro-brous armor, but this has been augmented
with the use o CASE II or superior protection against internal
damage should it suer catastrophic damage to its more volatile
components. This, combined with the use o a less bulky standard
engine, ensures that withdrawal will remain an eective option i
the Ursus-PR nds itsel overwhelmed.

When we learned o the Diamond Sharks development o a new
dium weight BattleMech, it at rst looked like another sign o typically
Clan security. Tapping a cache o new advanced-tech supplies only
ently developed at their Twycross acilities, and shipping them around
ringe o Clan-controlled space to their newer ret plants on Itabaiana
he Draconis Combine, it did not take long or the shipments to attract
ention, given their heavy ghter escort and armed transports. Slipping
nts onto their trail and eventually onto Itabaiana itsel took considerable
orts, as they risked detection by multiple counter-intel agents working
at least three governments.
One can thereore imagine those agents total shock when they were
tly captured by Diamond Shark Watch personnel and escorted to
ir very objectiveall under the guidance o a smiling Diamond Shark
rchant actor.
The prototypes presented to our agents were impressive. Bas ed on
popular silhouette o the Timber Wolf OmniMechstill reerred tomany agencies today by its Inner Sphere name o Mad Catthe so-
med Mad Cat III weighed in a ull twenty tons lighter than the iconicni. Boasting a land speed some twenty percent aster, it also carried
n twenty-tube LRM launchers and a total o eight extended-range laser
apons ranging rom the ultra-small micro lasers to the more powerul
diums. As our agents listened, the Sharks representative explained thatLRMs were enhanced with cutting-edge Artemis V re control systems
greater accuracy, and each carried enough missiles or two minutes o
tained re.
Noting the bulkier armor design, the Sharks urther extolled the
ues o the Clans brand-new erro-lamellor armor system, and how it
tected a skeleton o lightweight, low-bulk endo composite. The ten tons
his experimental armor, our agents learned, could provide protection
superior to any armor on the markets today. By way o demonstration,
Sharks allowed our men to witness an attack by a Vulture (Mad Dog) in
ha conguration. Ater unloading a ull volley o almost orty SRMs and
eral blasts rom its LB-X autocannon, the Vulture let the experimentald Cat IIInearly unscathed. The LB-X cluster munitions simply bouncedthe miniature Mad Cats hide with little more than paint damage andrch marks to show or their eort, while the SRMs merely aked away
all scraps o armor wherever they landed. Only when the Vulture pilottched his autocannon to solid burst rounds and red his PPC did the
ni-Mad Catshow any real signs o armor loss.
The Sharks ultimately allowed our men to return unharmed,
armed with the specs on their newest technologies. Though the entire
event may well have been staged, enough separate reports on similar
Clan developments have reached us to conrm the technology and its
capabilities are very real. What could still be a set-up, however, was the
too-good-to-be-true oer rom the Sharks to share their new project with
our orcesor a price they have yet to name, o course.

Another curious development the Diamond Sharks are
ortedly working on comes rom our sources in the Draconis
mbine. Unlike the discovery o the Mad Cat III-X, this one wasadvertised to us, but instead revealed by allied operatives in
Combines ISF, who have promised to share such inormation
part o our resource-exchange agreements.
Curiously, this Diamond Shark experiment mirrors eorts
hin the Inner Sphere to integrate Clan technologies. However,
her than ocusing such eorts on powerul, but hard-to-come-
tems such as C3 systems, the idea behind the so-named Hako-HR is apparently aimed at demonstrating the easibility o
ng more common Inner Sphere components to maintain Clan
chines in the Inner Sphere. This assessment comes rom careul
dy o the specs or this hybrid BattleMech, and the relatively
onsequential eects o its Sphere-born technologies.
Starting with a basic, Clan-made Ha Otoko chassis, the Shark
gineers kept the complications to a minimum; with this base
ign using standard internal structure and armor components
ily made in either the Inner Sphere or Clan space, parts can
easily used or machined even on comparatively lower-tech
rlds. The use o an Inner Sphere light usion engine allows the Ha
ko to achieve a decent land speed or a heavy Mech, withoutking up the resource cost o a Clan XL, and without risking thence o incapacitation through destruction that comes with an
er Sphere-made extralight. Moreover, or a mere 1.5 tons o
ditional weight and the same overall bulk within the chassis,
Ha Otoko-HR could upgrade its speed and power through the
o a Clan-made 325-rated XL engine. This means that a eld
t that improves perormance using Clan tech remains a viable
ion or damaged hybrid Ha Otokos. It would also be an option
wap out the Clan-made Mech Mortar launchers this machine
orts in its shoulders. Though a strange weapon choice even
he best o times, their use on a heavy re support unit is not
irely pointless, but it is not entirely optimalsuggesting that
, too, is an experimental notion.
With the Inner Sphere-made engine also comes a Sphere-
de cooling system, and thus the Ha Otoko-HR urther reinorces
notion o a design purpose-built to su rvive o o existing Inner
here sources, rather than Clan supply lines. The ull implications
his tack are many, and range rom the possibility o the Sharks
planning a long campaign against Inner Sphere orces, or another
possible marketing ploy to cross sell to Clan and Spheroid buyers, or
even a long-term strategy intended to hedge their bets and ensure
suitable supply sources in the event they never re-establish contact
with the distant Homeworlds. This last theory looks best, especially
in light o the suggested sale o advanced Clan technologies to
our people. With ew worlds at their disposal, but many resources
to barter, the Sharks may be trying to establish allies and secure
their own means to survive now that they apparently cannot go
home again.

Emerging rom an adjunct wing o the Jade Falcons Olivetti actories
Sudeten, the Kraken-XR, like the Cougar-XR, is an experimental reted on a Clan standby. As with the other prototypes described in this
ume, it remains to be seen i the Clans will begin elding such advanced
hnologies in the near uture, but i so, we might expect to see more
the Cougar and less like this hundred-ton monstrosity, which hasparently been built almost entirely rom experimental components.
While based on the design specs o the Kraken (Clan name, Bane)tleMech, the Kraken-XR uses an endo-composite internal structuret reduces its skeletal weight or hal as much bulk as endo steel. This
mpromise structure protects a 300-rated extralight engine that gets th e
ch up to a maximum land speed o ty-our kph, but uses the Falcons
cy laser heat sinks instead o the traditional reezers. Since these sinks
re rst observed in use on the Night GyrOmniMech, we have not seenm used all that extensively, likely due to supply troubles or perhaps the
cons considered them a technological dead end. Ater all, while they
seem to oset the catastrophic eects o overheating somewhat, they
d to make any Mech using this technology a glowing target on the
tleeld. The use o these special sinks on this ret thus suggests that thecons may have ound some odd use or them that we have overlooked.
I the laser sinks are intended to oset potential ammunition
losions, the Kraken-XR looks like a design that likes to take ew c hances
re. Though the Mech does sport a typically high number o ammunition-
weapons (including experimental Clan-tech rotary autocannons and
eak LRM launchers), our analysis shows that this machine could not even
ke its heat i it red a ull volley rom all o its weapons combined while
ving at a run. Between the lock-to-re eciency o the Streak launchers,
d the low heat curve o the RACs, even adding in the extended-range
ge laser housed in the Kraken-XRs right torso would accomplish littlere than to raise the Mechs cockpit temperature a couple o degrees or
seconds, thanks to its sixteen laser sinks.
Indeed, even i the Kraken-XR were to suer a breach to its maximized
ll o reective armor, every ammunition bin it carries is protected by the
proved CASE II system. As a result, this Mech becomes a virtual battleeld
mbie, unlikely to all to a ash ammunition explosion or overheating,
d more likely to perish rom massed re as it holds its ground to rain
truction on enemies rom over 600 meters away.
The sheer volume o experimental tech placed in this chassis suggests
a high resource cost or its design and to date, we believe th e Falcons have
constructed no more than three Kraken-XRs. It is thereore rather unlikelythat we will be seeing this machine in ull production any time soon.
Ultimately, the Kraken-XRs may be little more than what they appear to be:
eld test chasses, built only to determine the viability o as many new items
as the Clan can squeeze on them.

The Enyo-XR reportedly emerged rom the testing grounds o the
ls Horses Deep Periphery base on Nouveaux Paris in the middle o the
ad. Given their preerence or conventional orces, it comes as no great
prise that the Horses would choose to invest heavily in upgrading their
mbat vehicle orces, and the Enyo is a solid medium-weight strike design
tart with.
The theory behind this ret clearly aims at maximizing the Enyos
vivability in battle, and it spares no expense in doing so. Using a
totype XXL-type usion engine, with a supercharger to boot, the Enyo
sustain a top ank speed o nearly 120 kilometers per hourand can
n achieve short bursts just above 150 with the supercharger engaged.
h speeds enable this ret to keep up with most high-perormance
ht Mechs and vehicles, and can even give hovertanks a challenge. As
rther eort to add resilience to this vehicle, the Horses even armored
Enyo-XRs motive system, but while those eorts reduce the chances
uering debilitating mobility damage in combat, drivers are cautioned
se restraint when pushing the vehicles limits. The Enyos supercharger
sts, ater all, can cause severe motive and engine damage i mishandled.
The extensive modications to the Enyos engine and drive systems
y have created a speedy, hard-to-hit, and hard-to-disable monster, but all
his comes at an extreme cost in the vehicles mass. As a result, the Enyo-XRghtly armed compared to its base model. Sacricing the SRM launchers
d machine guns that backed up its main gun, the Enyo-XRs primary
apon is now its only weapon. Considering the type o high-speed combat
ected o their new ret, the Horses opted to enhance the Enyos large
se laser to an extended-range large pulse weapon to oer greater range
le maintaining the increased accuracy o pulse technology. This change
y ironically be the cause o the Enyo-XRs lack o secondary armaments,
wever, as the additional heat sinks required could have been used instead
etain at least some o the original vehicles deleted SRM tubes.
The Hells Horses have reportedly produced at least our Enyo-XRs to

The Athena-XR is another experimental vehicle variant clearly
veloped by the Hells Horses Clan. Unlike the Enyo-XR, the Athenas origins
parently hail rom a project initiated in the Homeworlds some time just
er the start o the Jihad. This would put the vehicles development as
ng place concurrent with the Clans early moves against the Wolves in
Homeworlds, and it may even be possible that the Horses started the
ject as a diversion, using the activity at their Niles Industriplex to cover
the rapid movement o equipment and units they must have already
iated at the time.
As design rets go, the Athena-XR makes some rather signicant
uctural changes to the base design. Dropping the twin Gauss ries
ically alters the tanks chassis, producing a look that is lower to the
und, almost to the point o sleekness. However, a small turret now exists
ween the now-absent riesjust above the drivers viewport, while
Athenas original top-mounted turret has been expanded greatly. The
ward turret houses two medium lasers and a quartet o machine guns,
le the higher rear turret carries our large laser muzzles.
More than the radical dual turret design, the lasers intrigued our
eratives who learned o their range and overall eectiveness, as they
tched those o standard Inner Sphere design. Though still mated to an
anced targeting computer or accuracy, it seemed peculiar that the
ses would ret one o their more potent combat vehicle chasses with suchrior weapons. More bafing with the cooler thermal image the Athena-XR
duced, which was quickly traced to its lack o an actual usion power plant.
Close analysis ultimately revealed that the Athena-XR was, indeed,
erating on a combat-rated uel cell engine, instead o a battleeld
on plant. Its peculiar lasers, as it turned out, did not require usion
power them, but were instead an evolved orm o primitive chemical
ers, developed specically by the Horses or vehicular use. With these
apons, the Horses could gain the armor-penetrating eect o energy
apons without a reliance on usion power or ampliers to keep their
ers ring. Instead, a chemical ammunition provides the means by which
Athena-XR can lay waste to its targets (though we now understand
high pressure and toxic nature o these chemicals present as serious a
nger to the vehicle crew as live ammunition).
The unique combination o the uel cell engine and the chemical lasers
given the Horses an interesting new advantage in vehicle design that we
y have not seen the last o. Even though only a handul o these Athena-XRs
de it into the Inner Sphere, it is quite likely that we will see more vehicles
these, should the technologies involved reach mainstream production.

With only a handul o Clans still known to eld ProtoMechs,
re have been ew reports o experimental technologies being
ployed on such units. The Hells Horsesas one o the ew Clans
know o who have embraced the ProtoMech concepthave
s become a ront-runner in exploring these miniature Mechs,
this only truly became evident during their recent move into
Inner Sphere.
The Minotaur-XP, our operatives have learned, originatedm one o the last Hells Horses crash programs launched at
Niles Industriplex site in the Clan Homeworlds. In this ret, a
ic weapon swap, the removal o jump jets, an d the addition o
ain gun mount were perormed on a Stars worth o Minotaur
toMechs the Clan had yet to deploy. Seeking to improve the
erall lethality o these designs, these prototypes swapped
the standard Minotaurs shoulder-mounted extended-rangedium lasers or improved heavy small lasers. Although the
ulting repower was slightly weaker than that o the medium
ers, and suered rom a vastly reduced range, they saved a great
l o tonnage in terms o h eat sinks and overall weapon weight.
With the tonnage saved by this weapon trade and the
moval o the Minotaurs jump jets, the Horses were able to add a
elve-shot, ve-tube SRM launcher in an attac hed main gun pod,
d maximized the armor protecting the nine-ton machine. As a
ult, the Minotaur-XPs became tougher, and could deliver moreective damage than the base modelsalbeit with less mobility
d a much reduced strike range.
The Minotaur-XPs changes naturally mandate a very dieent

her than trying to snipe at armored targets such as BattleMechs

ay at range, these prototypes are best deployed against vehicles

vance, as part o an ambush. Indeed, reports reached us that
o Points oMinotaur-XPs were used as part o a deense against
ecent Jade Falcon raid into the Horses new Occupation Zone.
he ensuing battle, the Minotaur-XPs, using the ruins o anndoned city or cover, ambushed a mixed Star consisting o two
mental Points and three Jade Falcon heavy Mechs. The reght

Only about ten Minotaur-XPs remain in operation at thistime, and the Horses have apparently recalled them to their

manuacturing seems centered on that world, we can readily
presume that additional ProtoMechs may soon enter production
as the Clan stabilizes its supply lines. I this happens, the battle

The origins and development history o the Ammon-XR ospace ghter is largely unknown to us, but to date only a
dozen o these crat have been seen, all o them attached
he Diamond Sharks naval eet. Though it is possible these
hters are a ret perormed in the eld, a careul analysis o their
abilitiescross-reerenced with known specs on the Clans
st weapon designshas convinced our people that the ret is
her extensive in nature.
Based on the second-lineAmmon aerospace ghter that rst
ered service in 3065, the Ammon-XR clearly takes great painshide its upgrades. It shares the same per ormance prole and
ouette, topping out at the same our-point-ve Gs o maximum
eleration, with an identical armor layout. Its ight endurance
d heat control systems likewise appear to be unchanged,
icating the same uel reserves and number o heat sinks.
In combat, the changes become instantly more apparent.
ough the weapon layout is visually similar, only the closest
pections can discern that the Ammon-XR s missile launcherslightly larger and have more launch tubes than the standard
mon, or that there is one ewer weapon muzzle in the ghters
econe. O course, or the enemy unortunate enough to get
se enough to realize this, it may be too late. Mounted in themon-XRs nose are two improved heavy large lasers. Thoughy lack the range advantage o the original Ammons trio oended-range large lasers, the combined hitting power o
se two weapons actually exceeds their predecessors potential
mage or less waste heat. The wing-mounted launchers are the
ond big surprise, upgrading rom six-tube Streak SRMs to ar-
ching Streak LRM 15s. Combined, these missiles and lasers can
age enemy ghters, and just two Points oAmmon-XRs couldily pose a serious threat to many combat DropShips.
Even the tail-mounted laser o the originalAmmon has been
apped out, replaced by a laser anti-missile system to deend
inst incoming re. This change is slightly more dubious
n the others only because it leaves the Ammon-XR without aapon to truly deter pursuing ghters, and orces the pilot to
sent his weaker tail section to incoming missile re or any sort
protection.
The weight o these a dvanced weapons gave away the ac t
that the Diamond Sharks had to trade in the original Ammonsstandard engine or an extra-light version. This change, which
can lead to a virtual ground-up reconstruction eort or most
aerospace crat, may have made it possible to make theAmmon-XR
a more eective ghter crat, but only at signicant cost increase.
Should this ret prove impressive enough to others, and the
technologies used reach mainstream production, we may well
see theAmmon-XR enter service as a new deense ghter or Clan
DropShips and the like. Until then, it appears that the Sharks are
content to retain their only samples as an elite squadron in their
naval command Star.

Ferro-Lamellor Armor

vv
As with the Diamond SharksAmmon-XR, the origins o Clanow Ravens recently unveiled Scytha-XR prototypes remainrky at this time, but an educated guess suggests it was made
a ret wing o the Crest Foundries actory on Quatre Belle.
at we can tell is that this ret, like that o the Jade Falcons
erimental Cougardesign, is somehow so extensive that it hasnsormed a modular OmniFighter into a static-conguration
t. The ScythaOmniFighter, known to be rare outside o the Jade
cons aerospace ranks, was likely selected or this ret specically
cause o its rarity. The theory goes that, given the difculties
maintaining their extant Scythas, the Ravens instead chose toesign them, swapping any specialized parts or those o more
al design in the bargain. I so, we might expect all Snow Raven
thas to one day become Scytha-XRspresuming, o course, the
t survives its current testing cycle.
Derived loosely rom the primary coniguration o the
tha OmniFighter, the XR drops its progenitors massivera autocannon/20 in avor o a prototype Clan-made rotary
ocannon. Though this weapon loses some o its punch, it makes
or the loss with greater reach, and is backed up by a large pulse
er or more accurate strang re. In each wing, the Scytha-XRks a single improved heavy large laser, while provides unlimiteddium-range repower on par with that o a Gauss rie. Twin at-
unted extended-range medium lasers remain on this ghter,
ctly like those o the primary Scytha, and are used to discourage
pursuit. This weapons array is signicantly lighter than that o
Scytha OmniFighter, but the Ravens devoted only some o the
red tonnage to heat sinks and uel.
Satised that the resulting crat can run arther and more
ably employ its repower than the original, the Ravens devoted
rest o the Scytha-XRs weight to armor, installing over twenty
s o their own prototype erro-lamellor in place o the original
rteen tons o erro-aluminum. This protection has proven
st ideal at negating the eects o many avored anti-aircrat
apons. For example, a Scytha-XRperorming a ground attack run
rtually impervious to LB-X autocannon re, while most modern
siles nd their eectiveness severely reduced by the ghters
n. The conguration o the armor is also more uniorm than
t o the Scytha OmniFighter; where the original Falcon designasted almost twice as much protection in the nose as in the at,
the Ravens redesign balances its protection and carries more tail
armor than can be ound on the nose o almost any Clan ghter
under eighty tons. What this means is that hostile ghters will be
hard-pressed to breach the Scytha-XRs skin with lighter weapons,
even when using lateral or tailing attacks. This underestimation can
give the XR pilot all the time he needs to wheel around and blow
a dogged pursuer out o the sky.
To date, only our Scythas operating in Snow Raven spacehave been conrmed as being o this experimental ret type.
Though its design suggests that the Ravens are trying to ensure
their ability to maintain these crat locally, it remains to be seen
i the Scytha-XR itsel is destined or production, or i it is merelya precursor to a completely ground-up design based on these
prototypes.

Battle Armor Myomer Booster
vv
Among the various new technologies that have emerged
ently, the Clans battle armor myomer boosters seem to have
come an early avorite. Oering greater mobility and damage
ential in anti-Mech attacks, these enhanced myomers can
sh battlesuit technology beyond its normal design limits, but
duces an inrared signature that makes its users impossible to
ceal. Among many Clans, stealth is not a priority, so it comes
ittle surprise to see these experimental boosters used in spite
heir limits, but this eature makes the traditional tactic o battle
mor ambushes completely uneasible.
Clan Snow Ravens Sylph-XR suit is a prime example. Eschewing
rademark VTOL systems and bomb racks, it uses a battle armor
omer booster to achieve a ground speed o more than ty
meters per hour, making it one o the astest battlesuits in
stence today. Though this Sylph is no longer able to take to the
es, its ground speed enables it to keep up with or overtake most
ntry. This is particularly important because the Sylph-XR is clearly
igned with inantry and insurgency combat in mind.
Armed with a pair o light machine guns and equipped with
earchlight or night operations, several Points o ret Sylphs
e been observed combing the woodlands and urban centers
Ramora, searching or sur vivors o the Dantes Inerno terrorists
y know to be colluding with the Word o Blake. Oten working
oncert with other, stealthier suits and conventional troops, th eph-XR troopers have acted more like hunting dogs, ushing out
den insurgents by charging into their suspected strongholds
h ashing searchlights and a burst o machine gun re. As the
orists scatter, the Sylph troopers and their comrades can either
n them down or capture them at leisure, knowing that n one can
ape the superior mobility and repower o the Clan battlesuits.
The development o the Sylph-XR seems primed or ull-scale
duction, but reports rom Ramora have not been entirely rosy or
Ravens actory sites there, and there is talk o relocation. At the
me time, there have been complaints about serious discomort
d even burn injuries sustained rom th e simple operation o the
ph-XR suits, likely due to poor insulation against the thermal
ects o the myomer boosters. A ew Raven Elementals have even
en lost (though their suits were recovered intact) because they
ened their visors to breathe in cooler air while in the eld. This
dvertently exposed themselves to eagle-eyed Omniss snipers,
o prioritized the earsome Sylphs over all other targets.
Other Sylph-XR troopers have also cited the lack o heavier
weapons as a problem when acing opponents who have access to
armored vehicles and the like. Noting that their enhanced strength
to execute anti-vehicular attack is lessened by the lack o decent
anti-vehicular weapons, these warriors may have a point. Given
the act that we have not spotted any more new Sylph-XRs in the
eld since the initial batch was deployed, the Raven leadership may
actually be considering these complaints.

vv
Reportedly developed in a mobile acility en route to the
er Sphere, the Elemental II (X) is a prototype battle armor
veloped by Clan Hells Horses to integrate the capabilities o
standard Elemental battlesuit (known to many in the Inner
here as Toad armor) with myomer-boosting technology. The
al o this experimental design was to enhance the Elemental as
Clans gold standard in battle armor design, and produce a
re eective general-purpose suit.
The result, evidently, ailed to impress the Horses leadership.
In order to balance mobility, repower, armor, and the
abilities o the battle armor myomer booster system, the Clan
gineers wound up increasing the Elemental II (X)s total mass
ty percent. At this weight and size, the suit could sustain its
ndard protection level, and even retain its trademark battle
ws, but its maximum jump radius was diminished, and the
ibility needed to execute anti-Mech attacks was lost. The
mental II (X) could still be eld-deployed by riendly Omnis,
one o its deadliest unctions was lost in the bargain. To make
or the loss o jump distance, the myomer boosters enable the
mental II (X) to achieve a ground speed three times aster than
t o the standard Elemental, but even this became ultimately
ted by the need to install its main weapona micro pulse
erin a detachable weapon pack mount.
Backing up the Elemental II (X)s primary weaponanden lling in or it i the laser is discarded in battleis a light
chine gun, mounted under the right orearm. An anti-personnel
apon mount was also added to the let orearm to provide a

he battleeld, easily capable o savaging almost any o the
er Spheres rst-generation suits and many Clan models, but its

Inner Sphere Partial Wing
Inner Sphere Camo System
vv
As i in response to the eorts o their ancient enemies, Clan
ost Bear has also been developing experimental battle armor
ts own. Rather than turning to the classic models, the Bears
orts have actually ocused on using a comparatively new design,
heavy Rogue Bear, as the platorm or their newest project,
chmuch like the Ursus-HRaims to integrate Inner Sphered Clan technologies.
The project is evidently the brainchild o Sven Hitomi, a native
alhagian who now serves the Ghost Bears as a chie technician,
d verste Jack Koslow, a retired member o the Rasalhaguengsarm. Based on Koslows principles o enhanced inantry
onnaissance, Hitomis approach aimed at granting the Rogue
r the mobility o lighter battlesuits, and the stealth c apabilities
nner Sphere inltration armor. The addition o a partial wing
tem, inspired by the D raconis Combines Kage battlesuits, easily
dresses the rst actor by giving the Rogue Bear an extra thirty
ters o distance with every jump, though this advantage would
ost in low-to-zero atmosphere environments. For the second
tor, Hitomi managed to mesh the operational capabilities o
n and Inner Sphere technologies by using basic, Clan-made,
ar-absorbing thermal plates, mated with a Spheroid-designed
ual camouage system. The result gives the Rogue Bear-HR th e
ity to move as switly as the conventional Elemental battlesuit,d conceal itsel almost as well as the mimetic battle armor the
rd o Blake avors.
The usion o these technologies is reportedly quite good,
not exactly perect. Minor glitches have cropped up in
ous stages o the testing or all ve o the Rogue Bear-HR
ts Hitomi and his team have produced, and some grumbling
ong potential HR troopers has been reported in resistance to
unClanlike stealth concept. Another complaint some troopers
e voiced regards the loss o almost a quarter o the Rogue Bears
mor to the stealth equipment and wing apparatus, as well as the
s o the heavy suits our-shot SRM launcher and its vibro-claws.
Hitomi and Koslow have calmly responded to these
ractors by explaining the central unction o the Rogue Bear-
s not to conront heavily armored opponents, but instead to act
n inltration and recon unit. Recognizing the benets o n ative
alhagian cooperation with the Clan-ruled Dominion, the Rogue
r-HR is built to help locate and contain (or eliminate) pockets o
rebels and terrorists, such as Motstnd. Critics remain somewhat
unconvinced by these arguments, however, because they eel
that even in that role, the Rogue Bear-HR is lightly armed. The
armors single machine gun and anti-personnel mount, ater all, is
barely sufcient or containing large groups o hostile insurgents,
no matter how much o a surprise the stealth equipment and
enhanced mobility provides.
This continuing debate has apparently slowed down any
potential mainstream production o the Rogue Bear-HR, but at
this point, it is too early to tell i this is a permanent situation, or i
Hitomi and Koslow have decided to take their hybrid back to the
drawing boards.
