CONDUCTORS
CHOIR CONDUCTORBrett Holland completed his Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium in 1995, Graduate Diploma Education at QUT in 1996 and Master of Philosophy (Music) in 2003. He is a well-known Bass in South East Queensland who has sung professionally as far north as Thursday Island and as Far South as Melbourne. Brett has sung with Opera Queensland, Opera Australia and as the Bass Soloist in many works for many ensembles up and down the East Coast. Some of Brett’s 2013 engagements are the Role of Caiaphas for Opera Queensland, the solo Bass part for Haydn’s Seven Last Words of Christ and the Adjudicator of the Vocal Sections of the Townsville Eisteddfod. Brett is in great demand as a vocal teacher, guest choral conductor and is the Director of Choral and Vocal Studies at the Brisbane Boys’ College.
CONCERT BAND CONDUCTORRob Cooke graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1984 completing a Bachelor of Music in performance majoring on Trombone. He has had a diverse range of performance experiences that include working with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, The State Opera Company of SA, The State Orchestra of Victoria, and many overseas and Australian artists including the rock band ‘Midnight Oil’.
Rob has been an active music teacher for 27 years and has been a Director of Music in various schools for 23 of those 27 years.
As the Director of Music of The Southport School, Rob is working with a dynamic team of music educators to create a vibrant ‘musical community’ that continues to engage its students in a lifelong passion for music making. He teaches Year 12 Music and Music extension and is also the Gold Coast District Review Panel Chair for Music Extension. Rob has a strong background with wind ensembles. He directs the TSS Senior Concert Band and Senior Big Band and also enjoys teaching lower brass.
SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA GUEST CONDUCTORRichard Gill, OAM, is one of Australia’s pre-eminent and most admired conductors and is internationally respected as a music educator. He is Founding Music Director and Conductor Emeritus of Victorian Opera and Artistic Director of the Education Program for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He has been Artistic Director of OzOpera, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, and Adviser for the Musica Viva In Schools program.
He has conducted all the major Australian symphony orchestras and youth orchestras, New Zealand Symphony, Sydney Chamber Choir and Sydney Philharmonia Choir. For the Sydney Symphony he has conducted Meet the Music and Family concerts, Discovery concerts with the Sydney Symphony Sinfonia and Sinfonietta concerts,
Richard’s extensive operatic repertoire includes The Rake’s Progress, Cosi fan tutte, Don Giovanni, The Threepenny Opera, Damnation of Faust, Julius Caesar, Duke Bluebeard’s Castle, Ariadne auf Naxos, and Rembrandt’s Wife (Victorian Opera); The Love for Three Oranges, Faust, The Eighth Wonder, Lindy, Macbeth, La forza del destino, Rigoletto, Lucia di Lammermoor, Il trovatore, Romeo et Juliette, Fidelio, Turandot, Pearl Fishers, (Opera Australia); The Magic Flute and The Marriage of Figaro ( Opera Queensland.
He has held several important posts including Dean of the West Australian Conservatorium of Music, and Director of Chorus at The Australian Opera and has received numerous accolades including the Bernard Heinze Award, Honorary Doctorates from the Edith Cowan University of Western Australia, and the ACU, the Australian Music Centre’s award for ‘Most Distinguished Contribution to the Presentation of Australian Composition by an Individual’ and the Australia Council’s Don Banks Award.
