Trash bags at the ready, locals armed against litter
Last year, about 1,200 vol-unteers collected 250,000pounds for Denton’s Great
American Cleanup. This year, Keep Denton
Beautiful is hoping for evenmore.
About 800 people havealready registered for the eventthat will be held March 6 from8 a.m. to noon.
The Great American Cleanupis a nationwide effort fromMarch 1 to May 31 that encour-ages people to take some timeto clean up their cities.
“It is interesting to see what
people find,” said MendieSchmidt, the Keep DentonBeautiful event and outreachcoordinator.
Volunteers will be providedgloves, trash bags and recyclingbags, plus a free T-shirt.
Schmidt said she encouragesvolunteers to dress appropri-ately for the weather and towear closed-toed shoes.
Volunteers for Denton’sevent are encouraged to regis-ter in advance so the organiza-tion knows how many glovesand trash bags are needed. It isalso helpful in deciding which
location fits the size of thegroup, Schmidt said.
After the cleanup is over, pizza will be served and differ-ent activities will be set up atthe Denton Civic Center, 321 E.McKinney St., where volun-teers will bring their collectedtrash to be weighed. This helpsthe organization measure whatimpact their efforts had,Schmidt said.

Two exhibits focused on printmak-ing are featured in TexasWoman’s University’s East and
West galleries through March 17.
The West Gallery features Leon PolkSmith’s prints and drawings. The exhib-it was assembled by his alma mater,East Central University in Ada, Okla.
The American abstract artist left hiswork to the university before he died in1996.
As a companion to Smith’s work,TWU decided to feature Texas womenprintmakers in the East Gallery.
“Texas Women Printmakers” includesvarious printmaking styles done bywomen from the 1930s to the present, gallery coordinator Vance Wingate said.
The exhibit shows the different waysprintmaking can be done, he said.
Paintings tend to get more interest, but Wingate said he loves printmaking.
“It is printmaking which is kind of anoverlooked medium nowadays,” he said.
The galleries are open from 9 a.m. to4 p.m. Monday through Friday on thefirst floor of the Visual Arts Building,100 Pioneer Circle, at the corner ofTexas and Oakland streets.

This just in: The eight-track tape isn’t dead. Youheard us. Pull those buds outof your ears and pay a rever-ent moment to the eight-track. Musician and musichistorian (at least we thinkso) Bucks Burnett is bringinghis recording antiques toDenton for North by 35Music Conferette.
For those of you who areiPod enthusiasts: The eight-track tape was a reel-to-reelmusic recording. The technol-ogy was found in 1960s-eraFord Mustangs, for instance.Even though the tapes them-selves were finicky, music fansloved their portability. Theformat faded starting in the1970s, but the endless loopformat has a place in thehearts of those like Burnett,Earotica music store owner. You’ll see eight-track record-ings of acts like the Beatles, the Rutles and Led Zeppelin.
Another bonus: Burnettcurates “Metal MachineMusic: 35 Years,” which cele-brates the 35th anniversaryrelease of Lou Reed’s 1975double album. Burnett hassealed eight-tracks of rareVelvet Underground releases. There are also tracks byReed’s peers.
If you have a NX35 wrist-
band, you getinto themuseum free.If you don’t,admission isa paltry $2.
Whowe’re excit-ed about: DJ
MomJeans, also known asThat 70s Show’s DannyMasterson. We didn’t knowhe had any funk in him.
Confirmed: The Saturdaynight concert — with theFlaming Lips and Midlake —is annexed to the North
Texas Fairgrounds, at 2217N. Carroll Blvd. You can getinto the show for free.Wristband holders move tothe front of the line.
Wanna go? All-accesswristbands are $65. All-venue wristband for all sin-gle-night programming are$20, but Saturday single-night wristbands are soldout. Patrons must presentvalid ID and a voucher topick up their wristbands atartist and registration check-in between noon and 8 p.m.during the festival. No walk-up wristbands will be sold.Buying early is wise. Registerfor your wristband atwww.nx35.com.

Billy Brent Malkus comesby his Americana rootshonestly enough: He has
credits on a hog farm in theChesapeake Bay area. But hemust have had to shake off thedrawl to stand tall in Balti-more, where he had a stint in apunk outfit. He milks it in theTexas Sapphires, who stop inDenton on Saturday.
Rebecca Lucille Cannon,Malkus’ other musical half inthe band, got her feet wet in theAustin pop-punk scene.
Together, they turn out a sortof Americana-country on theirlatest, As He Wanders. It’s a lit-tle bit June-and-Johnny, and alot beer-hall swing styling.
The Texas Sapphires haveeverything a Texas folk-bluesfan needs: competent fiddling, rhythmic picking and soulfulharmonies. The band doesn’tallude to blues in the context ofDelta rock. The blues spun bythe Sapphires comes from anAppalachian spring.
As He Wanders stays mostlyon the down side, mood-wise.Sure, you can cut a rug to theirtunes, but with tracks bearingtitles like “Rain or Teardrops,”“Riddled Days” and “How Did IGet So Sloppy Drunk (When IWas Drinkin’ Neat)” anchor thealbum in some woe-is-mequicksand.

Beat keeper
After she was featured onNational Public Radio, artist Dessa touched off
a hot debate on the NPR Website about her credibility as ahip-hop artist.
But that’s how the contraltois marketed — a hip-hop artistwith indie and emo leanings.
It’s Dessa’s mash-up of stylesthat probably get the argu-ments churning. In terms ofmusic, Dessa’s backgroundsound percolates more than itbumps.
And then there’s the vocabu-lary — Dessa exchanges thepedestrian code of “ho” and“playa” and substitutes moreliterary labels. She doesn’t dealin posturing and threats. Dessadoes mystery and slow-burn
attraction. In “Dots andDashes,” Dessa compares theslap of a double-dutch jumprope to the switchy patterns ofher craft.
And on A Badly BrokenCode, her full-length album,Dessa twines Spanish aroundEnglish and jazzy keyboards in“Sadie Hawkins.” She’s awoman for the new world, withone toe wisely planted in thepast, when femme fatales twist-ed up film noir plots with sultrysex appeal and just as muchbrains.
Yes, the voice is sultry, butthe lyrics are where Dessashines.

Shadow boxing Polanski’s latest — and perhaps last — a personal, political thriller
By Boo AllenFilm Critic
A GPS device figures promi-nently into one of many plotsfound in The Ghost Writer, athriller from director RomanPolanski. And that’s conven-ient, because the gadget willalso come in handy to keeptrack of the film’s many twistsand turns.
The Ghost Writer is based onRobert Harris’ script, adaptedfrom his historical novel.Harris takes fairly currentevents and weaves a convolutedconspiracy theory, giving thefilm both an immediacy and afamiliarity.
Ewan McGregor plays thenameless freelance writer wholands a well-paying job asghostwriter for Adam Lang(Pierce Brosnan), England’smost recent prime minister. Anearlier draft of Lang’s memoirs
had already been prepared, butthat writer had been founddead on a beach near Lang’sfortress-like compound onMartha’s Vineyard.
The professedly apoliticalghostwriter initiates his follow-up interviews with Lang aroundthe time the InternationalCriminal Court prepares toindict the former prime ministerfor war crimes. Lang fears hecould be handcuffed anddragged away if he returns toEngland. Lang is an obvious
stand-in for real life formerPrime Minister Tony Blair.
Lang remains in the UnitedStates under government pro-tection that would shield himbecause it shields the U.S.against similar charges. Inthese maneuvers, the filmworks as wish fulfillment forthose still seething about pasttransgressions.
The ghostwriter uncoverswhat he thinks might beincriminating informationabout Lang, not only whetherhe condoned water-boardingbut also on other shady events. The search leads the writer to:a brief, seemingly gratuitous, encounter with Lang’s wife(Olivia Williams); an islandvisit with an old-timer (EliWallach) versed in the localtides; an inland visit with a col-lege professor (Tom Wilkin-son); and a frantic escape from
would-be assassins.Polanski intelligently juggles
all the plotlines, taking time toestablish motives and to makeas clear as possible his rapidlyevolving narrative.
The director must havefound resonance in this story ofa celebrated man who mightnever return to his homeland.Possibly as a result of this self-identification, Polanski turnshis film into a dark exercise inevil.
As the film continues, PawelEdelman’s cinematographygrows darker, leaving some lat-ter scenes nearly obscure.Alexander Desplat contributesa Bernard Hermann-like scoreto ratchet up the suspense fur-ther.

NOW PLAYINGThe Book of Eli () Denzel
Washington does his best to salvage
this heavy-handed post-apocalyptic
thriller of sorts from the Hughes
brothers (Menace 2 Society). He
plays a resourceful, spiritual loner
who wanders a barren landscape rav-
aged by war, determined to fulfill a
mission that involves a treasured
book. There are some interesting
concepts here, but as the film reveals
its secrets about the hero’s identity

takes itself too seriously, and isn’t
clever enough to match. Also stars

COVER STORY
A perfectunion
By Ellen Sackett Staff Writer
Opera lovers are in for a rare treat. Bedrich Smetana’sThe Bartered Bride, usually sung in English forAmerican audiences, will be presented by the
University of North Texas College of Music in its original lan-guage — Czech. This romantic romp, one of the most popularoperas of all time, is filled with light, folk-like tunes and astory of true love that prevails.
“We were surprised how delightful a work it is,” said OperaDirector Paula Homer. “When it’s sung in English, it usuallycomes off stilted or silly.”
Homer explained that singing the well-known opera in theoriginal language allows for a more accurate English transla-tion in the supertitles and gives the story a broader scope. Also, the music better fits the syllabic inflections of the lan-guage.
Faculty member Stephen Morscheck will sing the principalrole of Kecal. It’s unusual to cast a faculty member in a stu-dent production, but the part demanded a strong bass voicewith a wide range.
“He’s a fine role model,” Homer said. “I’ve been pleased tohave the students watch him prepare a role, how to be disci-plined and focus.”
Learning Czech hasn’t been easy, and preparations beganlast November.
“We needed experts that could help us,” said Homer. Jiri Petrdlik, a conductor from the Czech Republic, coached
the lead singers and conducted some of the rehearsals duringa two-week residency last semester. Timothy Cheek, author ofSinging in Czech: A Guide to Czech Lyric Diction and VocalRepertoire, worked with the students to cross the bridge fromspeaking the language to singing it. Both were sponsored bythe Kostohryz Residency, established at UNT through theCzech Educational Foundation of Texas.
UNT will present The Bartered Bride at 8 p.m. Friday andMarch 5; and 3 p.m. Sunday and March 7. Performances willbe in the Lyric Theater at the Murchison Performing ArtsCenter, 1200 North Texas Blvd. Tickets are $15 to $35 andcan be purchased by calling 940-369-7802 or online atwww.thempac.com.

Percy Jackson and theOlympians: The Lightning Thief(1/2) Chris Columbus directs this
heavily effects-laden movie based on
Rick Riordan’s young adult novel
about young Percy Jackson (Logan
Lerman), who learns of his demi-god
status as son of a Greek god and
mortal mother. He must travel with
his two friends (Brandon T. Jackson
and Alexandra Daddario) to the
underworld to rescue his mother,
while Zeus, Hades, and his father,
Poseidon, battle over some lightning
bolt. Or something. Decently enter-
taining if not particularly substantial.
Rated PG, 119 minutes. — B.A.
The Tooth Fairy () A minor
league hockey player (Dwayne
Johnson), with the nickname Tooth
Fairy because he knocks his oppo-
nents’ teeth out, is taken away to
fairyland and made to redeem him-
self when he makes fun of fairies in
front of the young daughter of his
girlfriend (Ashley Judd, remember
her?). Lumpish mixture of smash-
mouth violence and silly fairy gags.
Julie Andrews appears as the fairy
godmother. With Billy Crystal and
Stephen Merchant. Rated PG, 101
minutes. — B.A.
Valentine’s Day () A big-name
cast stars in director Garry
Marshall’s sappy romantic comedy
about entangled relationships on
Valentine’s Day in Los Angeles.
Various romances and near-
romances play out as Marshall doles
out his familiar broad comedy. With
Taylor Swift, Ashton Kutcher,
Jennifer Garner, Jessica Alba, Shirley
MacLaine and many others. Rated
PG-13, 124 minutes. — B.A.
The Wolfman Benicio Del Toro is a
man who finds the curse of the
werewolf haunting his family when
he returns to his ancestral home.
With Emily Blunt, Anthony Hopkins
and Hugo Weaving. — AP
