Hailey’s Club lends itshouse to Denton actsSunday night, and the
lineup brings on ambient, nu-jazz, experimental and punkmusic.
The bill is four-deep withDenton music-makers: Babar,Bleach Boys, Emic and OpsEsponja.
Babar specializes in spaciousinstrumental music madebetween just three musicians. What feels simple eventuallygrows more layered andthough the band is plugged in,it doesn’t do noise.
Bleach Boys, a Rabid DogRecords band, does surf punk. There’s lots of reverb, a sonicchip on a young shoulder andmore melody than you usuallyfind in a punk band.
For Ops Esponja, a mysteri-ous Denton property thatmixes drum and bass with nu-jazz, the music soothes thesavage breast without puttingthe brain on chill. Synth lineshop along with smooth plasticbeats. This is music that goesdown good with an urbandrink.
Emic, an indie act that givesmember credits to ShinsukiJibu for “visuals,” also makesgentle electronic music thatisn’t totally ambient but quiteat home in a rock-only bin.
Emic released its firstalbum, and, we are all growingin a cycle, in February. GeorgeKaiho and Semmei Kai playguitar, Kohsuke Tajima playsbass and Yuri Sasamoto playsdrums. No rough edgesemerge on the album. Emic’ssound is a slow-growing sort, swelling in an impressionisticway without falling into coldrepetition.
Sunday night should havesomething for the head-bangers and air guitarists as
well as a buffet of sound forthe music wonks.
Details: Doors open at 9p.m. Cover is $3 for ages 21and older, $5 for thoseyounger than 21. Hailey’s is at

percussion to their vocals. The two originally formed the
band in Athens, Ga., and recently relocated to Richmond,

True to their name, PhilHamilton and theBackroad Drifters would
rather not rush things. The Fort Worth-based
group, which plays tonight atRockin’ Rodeo, formed about ayear and a half ago after meet-ing at church.
The band members —including Austin WoodrowMorgan on lead guitar, AndyEmery on drums and CollinMaloney on bass — started outperforming cover songs in bars, but they began writing theirown music on the side.
“[We] didn’t want to write a
bunch of songs just to be song-writers,” Phil Hamilton said.
He believes some musiciansput out music too fast, and hisband would rather take itstime.
A month after releasing theirfirst EP, the band was signed toa record label, and two dayslater they were in the studiorecording the rest of their firstalbum, Hamilton said.
“We weren’t really ready forit, but we did it,” he said.
The resulting album, No-thing to Lose, was released inApril on Winding Road Music.
Hamilton grew up listeningto Tom Petty and Pat Green, and he said his band oftendraws comparisons to CrossCanadian Ragweed.
“We work really hard to puton a full show,” he said, notinghis band’s high energy andinteraction with the crowd.
“We like to have a little fun,”Hamilton said. “It gets a littlerowdy at times.”

compelling documentary from
Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney
(Taxi to the Dark Side) examines
the life and shady activities of dis-

Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff,
whose sleazy tentacles are shown to

Holy Rollers (1/2) Uneven crime
drama, based on a true story and set
in a Hasidic Jewish community in
1990s Brooklyn, follows a young
Hasid (Jesse Eisenberg) who desires
to break free from his life of arranged
marriage and rabbinical studies. But
a friend (Justin Bartha) gets him
caught up in a European drug-smug-
gling operation that puts his conser-
vative nature to the test. The acting
is excellent, helping to smooth over
some of the rough spots in the
script, which eschews generic action
scenes but also lacks an edge and a
sense of conviction. Rated R, 89 min-

The Karate Kid () A remake
of the 1984 film might seem unnec-
essary, but at least this version
changes some of the details, follow-
ing a 12-year-old from Detroit (Jaden
Smith) who moves to Beijing with
his mother (Taraji P. Henson), where
he gets beaten up by a bigger kid at
his school, so he seeks advice from
a wise but reclusive handyman
(Jackie Chan). It all leads up to a cli-
mactic kung fu tournament, of
course. While the direction needs
more discipline, the backdrops are
scenic, and Smith and Chan gener-
ate a convincing student-teacher
chemistry. Rated PG, 140 minutes.

Welcome to the gun showBy Boo AllenFilm Critic
The A-Team puts the popback in summer popcornentertainment.
But being true to its 1980stelevision roots, it also has itsfair share of corn.
Writer-director Joe Carna-han brings his own manic“style” to this raucous rehash of’80s revenge. This time,Carnahan and co-writers SkipWoods and Brian Bloom incor-porate basic plot elements ofthe TV series, updating it with abrief Iraq war setting and abarrage of not-always-impres-sive special effects.
The trio of writers obviouslyworked feverishly to createtheir plot of double and triple
crosses, highlighted by ridicu-lous escapes, unbelievabledestruction, varying locationsand one spurious disguise.
The story begins in Mexico, giving each of the four future A-Team members, all formerArmy Rangers, their back sto-ries. Jump ahead eight years andthe foursome comprises the bestspecial operations team in Iraq, selected by Gen. Morrison (Ger-ald McRaney) to thwart an at-tempt by Saddam loyalists totake a set of U.S. currency en-graving plates out of the country.
The plan backfires, resulting
in court-martials and prisonterms for the foursome: leaderHannibal Smith (Liam Nee-son), Face (Bradley Cooper),Murdoch (Sharlto Copley) andB.A. Baracus (Quinton “Ram-page” Jackson, who spends thefilm doing a Mr. T imitation). And since they land in four dif-ferent prisons, director Carna-han conveniently orchestratesfour explosive escapes, reunit-ing the foursome in theirattempt to right the oppressor’swrong.
Patrick Wilson plays the oilyLynch, a shady CIA agent whoentices the team with promisesof reinstatement and cleanrecords, while Charisa Sosa(Jessica Biel), an officious Armyofficer and Face’s ex-girlfriend,works to find the four and themissing plates.
With this many forces atodds, Carnahan has no trouble
in choreographing his series ofexplosions, whether in the sky,the Los Angeles harbor, Iraq,Mexico or Germany. Everyplace is home for the director’spenchant for blowing thingsup, shooting people and exe-cuting various forms of chaos.
As usual, Carnahan overdoeshis action sequences, mistakingconfusion for excitement. Re-cognizing the good guys is fair-ly easy, but when one of Car-nahan’s quick-cutting ram-pages begins, it is often difficultto define who did what towhom. Guns fly, explosionsrock the air and bodies dropfrom the sky.
It’s dizzying, but just aboutwhat would be expected of asummer popcorn movie basedon a cheesy 1980s TV series.

Denton Community Theatre isn’ttaking its typical tactic. It meetsJune with a heavy, visceral drama
instead of its usual
light musical theater.Tennessee Williams’ The Night of the
Iguana is no light bit of summer fluff. It’s one of Williams’ most introspectivepieces, and not a cinch to direct. Veteranactor and sometime director Dennis
Welch takes the helm ofthe drama,
which opens Friday at the CampusTheatre in downtown Denton.
“I get pulled into the performancessometimes, and forget that I’m directing,”said Welch, who has placed the play’sCosta Verde hotel on the theater’s stage.
The story has all the ingredients of a thinker. Father Lawrence Shannon, played by familiar
face Sean Frith, lost his church long ago for sexu-al misconduct. The play finds him scratching out
a life as a tour guide. For more money, heaccommodates travelers who want to gobeyond the tourist centers. This summer,Shannon backslides and seduces a youngwoman on his latest tour. Her chaperone is
outraged, and means to make trouble for thealcoholic lecher. Shannon is pursued byMaxine, the proprietress of the Costa Verde. He ignores her advances when Hannah Jelkes,a traveling painter, arrives with her grandfa-ther, a poet.
Each of the players wrestles with a secret. It’sShannon who burns with regret, self-loathingand a craving that clashes with moral code ofthe day — not to mention his religious values.Shannon didn’t lose his church just because heseduced a “very young Sunday school teacher,”but also because he shocked his church with asermon damning their God, a creator who “actslike a senile delinquent.”
“Shannon doesn’t like what will save him,”Frith said. “He’s like all of us. We know whatwill save us, but we don’t want to do it,whether it’s losing weight or stopping drinkingor cutting out his wicked ways.”
Sharon Barnhill returns to the stage asHannah, a proper single woman who strikes upa relationship with Shannon. They are an
unlikely pair. Hannah is chaste and Shannonhasn’t often met a sexual opportunity he’s turneddown.
“I think it’s almost like holding up a mirrorwith these two,” Barnhill said. “They see the des-peration the other has, and they recognize it.Hannah’s not a con person, but she can kick intosalesperson mode like that, and read people tosell them her paintings.”
Amber Bryant plays Maxine Faulk, the reluc-tant owner and manager of the Costa Verde.Bryant plays the role loud and gauche. ForMaxine, Shannon represents the challenge sheneeds to stay interested in a man.
“She thinks a man and woman have to chal-lenge each other, and her late husband, Fred, didn’t challenge her,” Bryant said. “Maxine hasn’thad sex in 10 years, even though Fred died twoweeks ago. And the cabana boys don’t do it forher. When I first read this play, I thought shedidn’t want Shannon except as a love interest. But as we’ve worked on the show, I realize shethinks he can challenge her.”
“Maxine knows exactly what he [Shannon]needs,” Frith said. “He needs to have a drink andstay with her.”
Things come to a head during a single night.Shannon goes over the edge and Hannah saveshim by sharing a secret of her own.
And the iguana of the title? One of the cabanaboys catches one and ties it to the hotel verandaso that they can slaughter and eat it later. Thehelpless lizard is a little too familiar for the
guests’ comfort. As for a villain, Frith said Mrs. Fellowes
(Jeannene Abney) fills the role.“She doesn’t do anything unreasonable the
whole show,” Frith said. “But she stands up toShannon and pushes him to the edge.”
Bryant said the company could explore thedrama past the closing date and still not exhaustit completely.
“There are so many layers,” she said. “Themore we talk about it, the more we find.”

joys of marriage. Rated PG-13, 88
minutes. — B.A.
Get Him to the Greek () Spin-
off of sorts from Forgetting Sarah
Marshall has Russell Brand reprising
his role as Aldous Snow, a washed-up
British rock star living a life dominat-
ed by sex, drugs and tabloids. When
an ambitious music executive (Jonah
Hill) tries to escort the impetuous
Snow to Los Angeles for a comeback
show, it leads to a wild adventure.
The film generates plenty of vulgar
laughs, mostly from random one-lin-
ers and a slew of great cameos. Yet
the reliance on uninspired drug gags
and lack of real-world plausibility take
over. Rated R, 109 minutes. — T.J.
Iron Man 2 (1/2) Robert Downey
Jr. returns as billionaire industrialist
Tony Stark/Iron Man, and he again
faces off against those who doubt
his love of country and his ability to
defend it. A few new villains appear,
mainly Mickey Rourke as a mad
Russian scientist and Sam Rockwell
as a scheming competitor. Jon
Favreau again directs, and it looks
like more of the same, with few addi-
tional effects or breakthrough sur-
prises. Rated PG, 124 minutes. — B.A.
Killers An ex-assassin (Ashton
Kutcher) and his wife (Katherine
Heigl) go on the run after he is tar-
geted for a hit in this action comedy.
Rated PG-13, 100 minutes. — The
Associated Press
Letters to Juliet (1/2) Amanda
Seyfried stars in this formulaic but
ingratiating romantic comedy about
a woman (Seyfried) who travels to
Verona, Italy, with her fiance (Gael
Garcia Bernal), only to be sidetracked
into helping an Englishwoman
(Vanessa Redgrave), with her prig-
gish grandson (Christopher Egan),
find her Italian boyfriend (Franco
Nero) from 53 years previous. Rated
PG, 105 minutes. — B.A.
Marmaduke (1/2) Ill-conceived live-
action adaptation of the comic strip
about a slobbering Great Dane
(voiced by Owen Wilson) moving
with his human family from Kansas
to Orange County, where he encoun-
ters a host of insecurities when try-
ing to fit in with fellow canines at the
local dog park. It essentially turns
into The O.C. with dogs, and what
that has to do with the comic strip, I
don’t know. But the humor is of the
lowbrow and slapstick variety, and it
features lots of cute animals mug-
ging for the camera and bonding
with their owners. Rated PG, 87 min-
utes. — T.J.
Prince of Persia: The Sands ofTime () Big-budget video game
adaptation stars a buffed-up Jake
Gyllenhaal as an outcast prince who
fights to protect a magical dagger
that can turn back time from falling
into the wrong hands. As you might
expect, historical integrity and plot
— which includes the requisite love
interest and sibling rivalry — are filler
to set up a series of sword fights and
elaborate action sequences, with a
lucrative franchise as the end goal.
Rated PG, 116 minutes. — T.J.
Robin Hood () Dark and violent
big-screen retelling of the 12th-cen-
tury legend stars Russell Crowe in
the title role as the outlaw who is
ostracized by the British government
he helped to save, then becomes an
ally of the oppressed. This big-budget
version tries to tell more of the back
story through a repetitive series of
elaborate battle sequences. It’s hand-
somely mounted, but the script lacks
character depth and sufficient good-
versus-evil passion. Rated PG-13, 140
minutes. — T.J.
Sex and the City 2 (1/2) The four
chic Manhattanites, still outfitted by
Patricia Field, return for more of the
same in this second sequel to the
popular TV series. Although Carrie
(Sarah Jessica Parker) has now set-
tled in with her marriage to Big
(Chris Noth), Samantha (Kim Cattrall)
arranges a trip for everyone for a few
days in Abu Dhabi, allowing writer-
director Michael Patrick King to milk
the cultural clashes and obvious dif-
ferences. Obvious and pat, but
should appeal to devoted followers.
Rated R, 146 minutes. — B.A.
Shrek Forever After (1/2) All this
3-D and IMAX technology can’t hide
the uninspired feeling given off by
this fourth installment in the erst-
while hilarious animated franchise.
There are a few solid laughs, musical
numbers and clever fairy-tale lam-
poons — the type that made the first
two Shrek films so amusing. But this
one feels more like a retread than a
fresh idea, with Shrek’s marriage
being threatened over his frustration
with fatherhood and a midlife crisis.
Rated PG, 96 minutes. — T.J.
Splice () Sci-fi thriller stars
Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley as
married genetic engineers who make
a breakthrough in the field of animal-
hybrid embryos. But when funding is
pulled amid ethical concerns, the
couple takes the dangerous step of
splicing together animal DNA with
that of humans, creating an unpre-
dictable creature they must keep hid-
den from the world. Rated R, 103
minutes. — T.J.
