The Ten Study Habits of Successful Students

1. Try not to do too much studying at one time.

If you try to do too much studying at one time, you get tired and your studying will not be very effective.

Space your study time over shorter periods of time and take short breaks to restore your mental energy

2. Plan specific times for studying

Decide on a good time that interruptions will be least likely.

Use this time wisely to complete assigned reading, working on a paper or project, or studying for a test.

3. Try to study at the same time everyday

So why choose the same time? It becomes a routine and thus a regular part of your life—just like sleeping and eating. This makes you mentally prepared to study.

4. Set specific goals for study times

Goals help you stay focused and monitor your progress. Sitting down to study will have little value if you do not make it clear in your head about what you want to accomplish during your study time.

5. Start studying when planned

Delaying an assignment because you do not like the assignment or think it is too hard is called “procrastination”.

Procrastination of any type will make it difficult to get things done that you need to.

In the end you rush to make up your lost time that was wasted and this results in careless work and errors.

6. Work on the assignment you find the most difficult first.

This assignment will require the most effort. Start with this one because you will have the most mental energy.

7. Review your notes before beginning an assignment.

This helps you make sure of the instructions and that you are doing the assignment correctly. Your notes may also contain information to help you complete the assignment.

8. Tell your friends not to talk to you during your study time.

This interrupts your study time and it is not easy to get back to what you were doing. Distractions come easily and often they are fun ---therefore, you must control them before they begin. Turn your cell phone off!!

9. Talk to the teacher when you have difficulty with an assignment.

Often “two heads are better than one” and the problem may become easier if you share your confusion.

A good strategy while at home: call a friend or ask a parent for help.

10. Review your homework that night and if necessary, over the weekend.

Yes, after school is for your free time and to have a little fun relaxing. However--- if you take a few minutes to review your homework, it will help you the next day and you may be able to remember more information.
