Always With UsWe think of you all the

time,

Emotions still running onhigh.

It’s been six years,Since you went into the sky.

A lot has changed in our livessince then,

But with us you still remain. Our own personal beacon of

hope,Guiding us through this game.

Our memories of you willnever fade,

The good, the bad, we treasurethem all.

Wherever we go, there youare,

Standing by us, though notvery tall.

And when we go to sleeptonight,

Our eyes will flood with tears. But we know you’ll visit us

in our dreams,And protect us from our fears.

For today is only another day,No different from the rest. You’ll still be here with us

tomorrow,Our Angel, you are the best!

Love you and miss you Anna!Hugs and Kisses

Wheel on over to Crossings for “Pumpkin Madness”during fall school break

ZUMBROTA – What to do over the fall school break that startsThursday, October 17? Spend it artfully at Crossings! Youth canchoose from two classes – or take them both!

“Pumpkin Madness,” is Thursday and Friday, October 17-18, 10a.m. to noon for ages six and up. Roll it out, cut your designs, add avine and leaves and all your spookiness and then finish it off withglaze and a candle! Guaranteed to be fired and ready to pick up byOctober 25. Just in time for your porch, table or window sill. This is a

great parent/child activity. Cost is $48; add a second family memberfor just $40.Or, try your hand at the potter’s wheel at Wheel Over Break,

Thursday - Saturday, October 17-19, plus Saturday, October 26. Theclass is 1-3:30 p.m. each day. This class is for those in grades fourthrough adults. Turn a lump of clay into a work of art! Learn how toprepare clay (wedging), center and form shapes on a professional-grade pottery wheel, and trim and finish your pieces with colorfulglaze.

Wheel class is $119, or $219 for two family members.Another opportunity for creativity with a high dose of fun is Sun-

day, October 20. Ages 8 and up are welcome at two classes: “Introduc-tion to Polymer Clay Beads and Buttons,” from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and “Sun Sculptures in Polymer Clay,” from 12:30-3:30 p.m. At“Beads and Buttons,” students will learn to create pictures or patternsin clay that can be compressed down into amazingly detailed beadsand buttons. Then in the afternoon, instructor Layl McDill will addsome glitter to the mix, showing students how to create their ownmillefiore to add into the rays of the shimmering sun sculptures they’llmake. “Beads and Buttons,” is $26 plus a $5 materials fee, and “SunSculptures,” is $49 plus a $10 materials fee. However, those who takeboth classes save $11.

Blaze orange safety requirement reduceshunting accidents

With Minnesota’s small game hunting season underway and thefirearm deer season set to begin Nov. 9, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says making a blaze orange fashion state-ment this fall might not get you on the best-dressed list, but it justmight save your life.

“Wearing blaze orange clothing is a safety requirement to hunt or

trap during Minnesota’s small game season or deer season,” saidCapt. Mike Hammer, DNR enforcement education program coordi-nator. “It’s important to be seen by others.”

Small Game Seasons: At least one visible article of clothing abovethe waist must be blaze orange when taking small game, except whenhunting wild turkeys, migratory birds, raccoons, predators, whenhunting by falconry, trapping or while hunting deer by archery whilestationary.

Deer Season: The visible portion of a cap and outer clothing abovethe waist, excluding sleeves and gloves, must be blaze orange whenhunting or trapping during any open season where deer may be takenby firearms (including special hunts, early antlerless, youth seasonsand muzzleloader). Blaze orange includes a camouflage pattern of atleast 50 percent blaze orange within each square foot. This restrictiondoes not apply to migratory bird hunters on waters or in stationaryshooting locations or to trappers on waters.

“The failure to wear to wear blaze orange puts a hunter in jeopardyof not being seen by someone who does not take the time to properlyidentify their target and what’s beyond it,” Hammer said.

Hammer recommends faded blaze orange garments be replaced.“Blaze orange, more than any other color, is the most easily seen

and recognized bright, unnatural color against a natural background,”

Hammer said. “This shade of orange is the only satisfactory color forhunters to wear under all weather and light conditions. The color of the cap, vest, or coat should be plainly visible from all sides while it isbeing worn.”

From the standpoint of hunter safety, the wearing of this high-visibility color while deer hunting and while small game hunting inheavy cover, such as for grouse and pheasant, is a great communica-tions tool.

“Blaze orange clothing is a tremendous aid in helping huntersmaintain visual contact with one another, particularly when movingthrough dense cover or woods,” Hammer said. “Any hunter who hasever identified someone strictly by seeing blaze orange knows itsvalue in keeping track of other hunters in the field.”

For those that use ground blinds, Hammer said to remember to placesome blaze orange on the outside of the blind for others to see. Tentstyle blinds can fully conceal even the best dressed hunter.

Some safety tips for nonhunters:• Wear bright clothing. Choose colors that stand out, like red,

orange or green, and avoid white, blacks, browns, earth-toned greensand animal-colored clothing. Blaze orange vests and hats are advis-able.

• Don’t forget to protect pets. Get an orange vest for an accompany-ing dog.• Make noise. Whistle, sing or carry on a conversation when walk-

ing to alert hunters that someone is in the area. Sound carries wellacross woods and forests, and hunters should listen for any sounds of animal movement.

• Be courteous. Don’t make unnecessary noise to disturb wildlife.Avoid confrontations.

• Make presence known. If a nonhunter hears shooting, the personshould raise their voice and let hunters know they’re in vicinity.

• Know the dates of hunting seasons. Learn about where and whenhunting is taking place.

• If hunting makes a nonhunter uneasy, the nonhunter should choosea hike in a location where hunting is not allowed.

Minnesota’s Lake Superior coastalprogram solicits grant applications

Minnesota’s Lake Superior coastal program is soliciting applica-tions by Nov. 6 for its 2014 annual grant cycle. Up to $450,000 will beavailable for projects that preserve, restore and enhance Minnesota’s

coastal resources, according to the Department of Natural Resources(DNR).The DNR’s Ecological and Water Resources Division administers

the coastal program.Grants are available in four project areas: coastal habitat protection

and restoration; public access and historic preservation; communityand natural resource planning; and coastal education and training.

Each year the coastal program offers federally-funded grants forprojects that address coastal issues. These projects help achieve re-gional and state goals for managing the land and water resources in thecoastal area.

Eligible to apply are local and state governmental entities andnonprofit groups working in the state’s coastal area, which includesportions of the lower St. Louis River, its estuary, Lake Superior andthe North Shore.

Applicants are required to match 50 percent of the total projectcosts. Individual requests can vary, but no more than $100,000 perrequest will be awarded. Applications for community and naturalresources planning and coastal education and training grants with upto $20,000 in total project costs may be eligible for a reduced matchamount of 25 percent.

The purpose of the coastal program is to preserve, protect, developand where possible, restore and enhance coastal resources for presentand future generations. The program cooperates with state and federalagencies, local governments and several area organizations to man-age the state’s coastal resources.

Grant funding is available from the National Oceanic and Atmo-spheric Administration, Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Man-agement, pursuant to the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972.

Application materials are available online at www.mndnr.gov/wa-ters/lakesuperior. Interested applicants can also request informationin alternative formats by contacting Karla Sundberg, grants specialist,at 218-834-1447 or [email protected].

Avoid deer-vehicle crasheswhile driving this fall

Nearly one-third of car-deer collisions each year occur betweennow and November, said the Minnesota Department of Natural Re-sources (DNR), citing a national report.

Minnesota is ranked eighth when it comes to car-deer crash totals,

according to State Farm Insurance, which tracks the trends nation-wide. Most states, the company reports, are seeing a decline in theirnumbers. There are two exceptions: Wyoming and Minnesota.

Though most people would expect these crashes to be more likelyin rural areas, motorists in urban regions of the state also need to watchout for these dangerous — and sometimes deadly — accidents involv-ing deer. Minnesota has 3 million drivers and 136,000 miles of road-way.

More than 20,000 deer-vehicle accidents are reported annually, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

While trying to predict when and where a deer and motorist willmeet is an impossible task, drivers who understand how deer behaveare more likely to avoid a crash. The DNR advises motorists to usethese driving tips to help avoid collisions with deer:

• See the signs. Deer-crossing signs are posted in high-risk areas.Drive with caution, especially in the posted areas.

• Deer don’t roam alone. Deer often run together. If one deer is nearor crossing the road, expect that others will follow.

• Danger from dusk to dawn. Watch for deer especially at dawn andafter sunset. About 20 percent of these crashes occur in early morning, while more than half occur between 5 p.m. and midnight.

• Safety begins behind the wheel. Always wear safety belts anddrive at safe, sensible speeds for road conditions.

If a vehicle strikes a deer, motorists should report the crash bycalling local law enforcement, the sheriff’s department, or the Minne-sota State Patrol. By following these tips and maximizing one’ssituational awareness, it becomes less likely to experience a deer-vehicle crash.

MnDOT asks motorists, farm equipmentoperators to share the road during harvest

Motorists traveling on Minne-sota highways this fall need to beaware of large farm equipmenttransporting crops to markets, grainelevators and processing plants, according to the Minnesota De-partment of Transportation.

“Harvest season is in full swingand farmers in every corner of thestate are out using the highways,”

said Sue Groth, state traffic engi-neer. “Motorists need to be pre-pared to encounter slow-movingfarm vehicles, especially on ru-ral, two-lane roads.”

Farm equipment is large andheavy, making it hard for opera-tors to accelerate, slow down andstop. The machines also make wideturns and sometimes cross overthe center line. In addition, farmvehicles can create large blindspots, making it difficult for op-erators to see approaching vehicles.

All of these factors can cause seri-ous crashes.

Between 2010 and 2012, 377traffic crashes took place on Min-nesota roads involving at least onefarm vehicle, resulting in 13 fa-talities and 211 injuries. Of the 13fatalities, six were farm vehicleriders; of the 211 injuries, 53 werefarm vehicle riders.

“The biggest factors contribut-ing to farm equipment/vehiclecrashes are inattention, speedingand unsafe passing,” Groth said.“When approaching farm equip-ment, motorists should always slowdown and use extreme caution.”

Motorists should:• Watch for debris dropped by

trucks hauling sugar beets and othercrops. It is safer to brake or drivethrough debris than to veer intooncoming cars or off the road.

• Wait for a safe place to pass.

• Wear seat belts.• Drive with headlights on at all

times.Farm equipment operators

should:• Use lights and flashers to make

equipment more visible.• Use slow-moving vehicle

emblems on equipment travelingless than 30 mph.

• Consider using a follow ve-hicle when moving equipment, es-pecially at night.
