ZUMBROTA – Crossings’October exhibit features an artistwho paints places she’d like towaste time in, and another whoponders one of humankind’s great-est mysteries. Odell Portz andSusan Farnham will show theirpaintings, and Farnham’s mosa-
ics, Oct. 1-31. A reception is Sat-urday, October 12, from 6 p.m. to7:30 p.m.
Portz, an art teacher at CenturyHigh School in Rochester, saysthat her works are based on aShakespeare quote, “I like this placeand could willingly waste time init.” They show the beautiful placesshe has visited.
“There is nothing more enjoy-able than being in nature with artsupplies or at least a camera,” sheadded. Creating art is about “be-ing in the now,” she added, andthings slow down so she can wastetime.
“Places all become a valuablepart of memory, so it wasn’t re-ally wasted,” she noted.
Susan Farnham maintains a stu-dio at Casket Arts in Minneapo-lis. She will show paintings andmosaic sculptures at the Cross-ings exhibit, but also works with
Artists who waste time and askquestions on display at Crossings
other materials. She sometimesdiscovers an artwork as she cre-ates it.
“When I begin a work I don’talways know where the finishedpiece will lead me. I build up, coverup, make up stories about the sub- ject while working. There will be
a few more changes and the work continues until finished,” she ex-plained.
Her pieces are whimsical andwry.
“My work is lighthearted andasks the question, ‘Are we alonein the universe?’ It is meant to befun and to elicit a smile,” Farnhamsaid.
The exhibit and reception arefree, and people may view theexhibit during regular hours:
MTWF 10-5, Thurs. 10-8 and Sat.10-4. Crossings is located at 320East Ave. in Zumbrota. More atwww.crossingsatcarnegie.com.
DNR announces special youth deer seasonYouth ages 10-15 are eligible
to participate in a special deer sea-son that runs from Thursday, Oct.17, to Sunday, Oct. 20, in 28 per-mit areas that encompass portionsof southeastern and northwesternMinnesota.
“This youth-only season pro-vides an opportunity for parents, guardians and mentors to sched-ule and plan a special deer huntwith youth,” said Mike Kurre, mentoring program coordinator forthe Minnesota Department of
Natural Resources.Deer permit areas open to the
hunt are 101,105, 111, 114, 201,203, 208, 209, 256, 257, 260, 263,264, 267, 268, 338, 339, 341, 342,343, 344, 345, 346, 347, 348, 349,601 and 602. Whitewater GameRefuge also is open to taking ei-ther sex deer by eligible youth.
Youth must meet all firearmssafety requirement, possess a li-cense and use the appropriate fire-arm for the permit area in whichthey are hunting. They may take adeer of either sex.
Licenses for youth ages 10, 11and 12 are free. Licenses for youth
ages 13-17 cost $5. All youths mustpay a $1 issuing fee when obtain-ing a license.
An adult mentor must accom-pany the youth but may not huntor carry a firearm. The specialseason should occur when studentsare on school break. Public land isopen as is private land, providedthe youth hunter has landownerpermission.
Participating in youth deer sea-son does not preclude the youthfrom participating in the regularfirearms deer season but any deerharvested do count against theyouth’s season bag limit.
DNR QUESTION OF THE WEEKQ: With nesting season over, what is the best method for cleaning
out a bluebird house?A: After birds are finished using the box remove all of the nesting
material. If the box has a door, open it and leave it opened until spring. This way, rodents won’t chew on the door or the entrance hole to tryto get in. If the box is soiled, spray a 10 percent bleach solution inside, wipe it out and let it dry. This should remove parasites and disinfectthe box so it is ready for next year.
