Abandoned
‘Think Differently’ Book Exchange, Christchurch, New Zealand. July 2013.
After the February 2011 Earthquakes in Christchurch, many public art spaces have grown around the city, in in-between places. The Book Exchange is placed on the corner near a nondescript intersection, and is based on the exchange culture of backpacking, wherein you can select a book only if you offer one of your own.
LOMOGRAPHY + DESIGN
Using film photography, narratives of Christchurch and Wellington are contrasted, with the collection of images resulting in a lit acetatemodel.
In the wake of the earthquake, residents of Christchurch expressed more concern for the disruption of their Children’s routines, the home life, rather than architectural symbols of their communities.
This work aimed to communicate the loss of home, using images of local schools, the beach, family sections as deserving more attention than what some media outlets have chosen to address.
The selection of Wellington images serves as a comparison, and as reinforcement of thegeneral ethos of a ‘Sister City’, one that is now also undergoing change.

The photographs were then used in the production of marketing for the band.
Images were taken on location around Wellington.

installation design
Proto-Utopia was an installation work that interruped the everyday rituals of the design class and studio.
Hung from railings in an open computer space, the design was a proposition in part- a tied cloth knot awaiting someone to unravel it, and to discover the internal intrigue of the new space.
The curious mind would then probe further and discover the hidden light cube, an object requiring tactile play to turn it on.
Once lit, the sand and grass at the bottom of the installation becomes visible, adding a level of naturalness that becomes unfamiliar in the context of computer and design studio.
Proto-Utopia was exhibited in-situ in October 2011, at Victoria University of Wellington, Faculty of Architecture and Design.
3d modeling and iterative design
‘81 Iterations’
In this design as research project,I used Frank Gehry’s Bibao Guggenheim museum as precent for the resulting abstract forms.
Through a series of iterative experiments, the form was developed and refined into an stl model. The brief specified that the end result be ‘a poetic transition between two planes’.
Using a methodology of concept sketching, physical card modeling, refinement and exploration in 3DSMAX, the resultant model was a delicate object reminiscent of striated glass.
This rigourous design research process has informed my later works.

Conveyor Belt Extension
During my time in a mailhouse and print production role, it became apparent a solution was required for organsising marketing collateral as it came off the conveyor. The below diagram illustrates how material would be slope-stacked, leading to greater efficiency.
While the tray is able to be used free-standing, it would also allow for fastening to the belt, for greater control of material. The diagrams were for an engineer to develop into a physical prototype.

The Circadian Treehouse is a design to support the return to natural sleep rythmns. The house incorporates a louver system, which introduces light as a sleep and wake regulator.
The design utilises the poetic and cultural qualities of the KoheKohe tree as a metaphor for nursing one back to health-in this case sleep.

HMV
For this project, I examined the history of the His Master’s Voice Gramophone company. For the creative output shown, graphic illustrations depict the history and narrative of a brand and company that has existed into the present, through two world wars and advancing technology.
GRAPHIC DESIGN
The final design incorporated an illustrated and whimsical timeline of the company, presented in the form of a glossy record jacket.
The Jacket lends itself to being examined, with the attention-grabbing colour and illustrations evoking an ink-drawing aesthetic.

Eat So They Can
Eat So They Can is an annual initiative of the Global Volunteer Network. The concept of ESTC is to create a fun hospitality and event-centred way to raise funds for charity.
Participants can list their own events to host, or in the case of this poster, attend one of the official events such as the annual Ball.
The other images are illustrations created to demonstrate how the branding would look on tshirts.

Fringe Festival 2014
In collaboration with HERE. Productions, I developed a range of marketing materials and publicity photographics to be used to promote the show, which is occuring in Feburary 2014, as part of the annual Wellington Fringe Festival.
My brief was to photographically capture the dynamic and dramatic qualities of the performance, and present a refined but engaging set of communications material for the group.
All photos pictured are my own, and required high attention to detail in the editing process due to the nature of the available lighting and set. I also created the the branding for HERE. Productions.
