I Am A Woodturnerby Ken Rizza"The wood spins, creating a blur which becomes thecanvas on which I paint. It has no beginning or end, only limitless possibility. No artist brushes here; onlyknives of steel to create the image inside waiting to befreed. Mystical in nature, I peel back the layers of timethat have been implanted by all that this tree hasknown, and by all who basked in its greatness. As itssecrets are revealed to me with each passingrevolution, I have to wonder what lies within it next thatwill shape its final destiny. This amazing creation byGod has helped mankind since time began and itmatters not whether it is dead or alive. Its usefulness isunfailing as it transforms from one phase of its existence to another. How unselfishthis gift of nature is! With little reflection one can marvel at and appreciate thismanifestation. One can hardly list all that a tree has done for thee. Now in my hands, itmakes its final journey as my tool's path is guided by its inherent beauty manifestingitself with each passing revolution. The final outcome will have no beginning or end. Itwill be so much more than when I started, as a new purpose for its existence iscreated. The human element embraces and gives deeper meaning to the tradition ofa wooden vessel. "The Bread of Life" is not complete unless served up in familyheirlooms cherished for generations. It is an awesome responsibility to be part of thecycle of life for one of nature's greatest gifts to mankind. I am a woodturner."

KC Symposium in Review What follows is a series of excerpts from an article by ChuckGies, featured in the North Coast Woodturners newsletter,August 2017. "This year in Kansas City, things were a little morecompact than they had been in Atlanta. The distance from the hotel to the conventioncenter was about the same, but it was mostly outdoors and eliminated a lot of the upsand downs that were necessary in Atlanta. The demos had a good deal of variety;everything from turning demos, to panel discussions, to critiques. Thedemos...seemed to suit my interests [better] than what I [experienced] in Atlanta. Asalways, some of the finest professional turners were giving demos...Now afterattending at least five symposiums, this was the best one yet. There is always sometype of improvement from year to year, and this year was no different. The biggest[enhancement]... was the video operation for each of the sessions... AAW is puttingsome real attention into getting their video set up right... [There is an] awful lot to seeand do in a very short time. It can really revive your interest in turning, even if it was onlife support...Think about it. You have some time. 2018 is Portland, OR, [Thursday,June 14, through Sunday, June 17, 2018.]"
