Thus was born the Zonta Club of Muntinlupa & Environs. One of over 40 Zonta Clubs in the Philippines today, ZCME is at the forefront of projects aimed at empowering women through educational, social, economic and political initiatives. Saklolo at Gabay ng Ina’t Pamilya or SAGIP, a 24/7 Crisis Response Center for abused women and children in Muntinlupa, is ZCMEFI’s flagship project. Established in 1998 in partnership with the Muntinlupa City Mayor’s Office, SAGIP offers rescued victims emergency shelter and immediate care, counseling and theraphy for their families and guidance in filing court cases. SAGIP also conducts ‘Combat VAW! Seminars” in communities and schools to prevent and protect women and children from all forms of abuse. To protect the youth in Muntinlupa, ZCMEFI created its “Gabay Bata” Program to teach children how to prevent and protect themselves against all forms of abuse. It partnered with the Department of Education in Muntinlupa and an NGO – the Center for the Prevention & Treatment of Child Sexual Abuse – to integrate “Personal Safety Lessons “ in curriculum of elementary and high schools students. In 2004, ZCMEFI embarked on a Scholarship Program dubbed “Tulong Dunong” to enable poor but deserving girls to acquire a secondary education for a better and brighter future. The ladies of the Zonta Club of Muntinlupa & Enviros have gone a long way from just the intent to help, to actually being the instruments in the empowerment of people and communities.
