Heat pumps can save money byremoving heat from the outsideair—even when the outsidetemperature is below freezing—and releasing that heat indoors.

To get the best performance fromyour heat pump, don’t change theroom thermostat very often.Raising the heat setting 2–3degrees will cause the Zoneline touse its electric heating elements inorder to reach the new temperaturesetting quickly.

There is a three minute minimumcompressor run time at any settingto prevent short cycling.

The indoor fan motor starts beforethe compressor and stops after thecompressor cycles off.

The electric heating elements usemuch more electricity than heatpumps and cost more to operate.

Switch #6 controls the FreezeSentinel. When the switch is DOWN,the Freeze Sentinel automaticallyturns on the resistance heater andfan if the room temperature (sensedat the unit) drops to approximately40° F. It will turn the heater off whenthe temperature reaches about 45° F.

The unit leaves the factory withthe Freeze Sentinel in the DOWN(on) position.

The Freeze Sentinel helps preventplumbing damage in the room dueto sub-freezing temperatures.

If the Freeze Sentinel is set, it isactive as long as power to theunit is on.

NOTE: The owner is responsible forchecking the Freeze Sentinel switchand ensuring it is in the desiredsetting.

The fan switch #2 is located behindthe room cabinet.

This switch is set at continuous fan(DOWN) at the factory to providecontinuous fan operation in coolor heat modes. Leaving the switchin the continuous fan setting allowscontinuous circulation of room airand will result in a more balancedtemperature throughout the room.

If you want the fan to cycle on and off with the compressor or with the heater, move the switch to cycle fan (UP).

Care & Cleaning

Turn the Zoneline off and discon-nect the power supply.

To clean, use water and a milddetergent. Do not use bleach orabrasives. Some commercialcleaners may damage the plasticparts.

Room Cabinet and Case

The coils on the outdoor side ofthe Zoneline should be checkedregularly. If they are clogged withdirt or soot they may be profes-sionally steam cleaned, a serviceavailable through your GE serviceoutlet. You will need to remove the chassis to inspect the coilsbecause the dirt build-up occurs on the inside.

Outdoor Coils

In some installations, dirt or otherdebris may be blown into the unitfrom the outside and settle in thebase pan (the bottom of the unit).

In some areas of the United Statesa “jell-like” substance may be seenin the base pan.

Check it periodically and clean itout, if necessary.

Turn the Zoneline off before cleaning. The most important thing you cando to maintain the Zoneline is toclean the filter at least every 30days. Clogged filters reduce cool-ing, heating and air flow.

Keeping these filters clean will:• Decrease cost of operation.

• Save energy.

• Prevent clogged heat exchangercoils.

• Reduce the risk of prematurecomponent failure.

To clean the air filters:• Vacuum off the heavy soil.• Run water through the filters.• Dry thoroughly before replacing.

To remove the air filters:

To replace the air filters:

CAUTION:DO NOT operate the Zoneline withoutthe filters in place. If a filter becomestorn or damaged it should bereplaced immediately. Operating without the filters inplace or with damaged filters willallow dirt and dust to reach the in-door coil and reduce the cooling, heating, airflow and efficiency ofthe unit.

Replacement filters are availablefrom your salesperson, GE dealer,GE Service and Parts Center or authorized Customer Care®servicers.

Installation Instructions

Read carefullyIf you have any questions, call the GE Answer Center at 800.626.2000.

• Use the correct wall case. This chassis is designed to be installed in a GEplastic or insulated metal wall case. This mini-mizes condensation from forming on the roomside of the case. If the current wall case is notinsulated, you can reduce the possibility ofcondensation forming by installing insulationkit RAK901L, available where you purchasedthe chassis.• Use the correct outdoor grille. You should use the outdoor grilles shown onthe “Essential Elements” label on the top of the chassis.• If an existing grille is not replaced, capacity and

efficiency will be reduced and the unit may failto operate properly or fail prematurely. Adeflector kit, RAK40, may be used with grillesthat were not designed for your new GEZonelines. The RAK40 contains air deflectorsand gaskets that mount to the chassis to directthe hot exhaust air away from the air intake toallow the unit to function properly. The grillemust have a 65% minimum free area.

• Any vertical deflectors in the existing rear grilleshould be removed to decrease condenser airrecirculation which can cause the unit to“short-cycle” and lead to premature compo-nent failure.

• Replacing a ducted chassis.

New ducted installation—If this unit is to beinstalled in a new ducted application using aduct adaptor kit, the kit must be installed beforethe chassis is placed in the wall case. The installa-tion instructions are packed with the kit.

Existing ducted installation—Replacement of anexisting ducted unit may require different com-ponents. Request this information from yoursales representative.

• Replacing 230/208 volt units. See page 12.

• Replacing 265 volt units.See page 13.

The instructions provided with the selectedsubbase kit must be carefully followed. It isthe responsibility of the installer to ensurethat connection of components is done inaccordance with these instructions and allelectrical codes.

B For direct connection to branch circuit wiringinside the provided junction box without usinga subbase kit, the cord is to be cut and the wireends stripped and connected as follows.

Steps for preparing cordset for direct connection:

1 Remove the junction box cover by taking outthe front four screws.

2 Remove the junction box by taking out the toprear screw. Note how the tab at the lower rightcorner of the junction box serves to hold thecorner in place. This will help when the box isbeing reinstalled. The cord will be coiled upinside the junction box.

3 Measure 6″ down the cord from the strainrelief securing the cord to the chassis and cutthe cord through at this point.

4 Carefully split the cord insulation at the centerfor 2″ so as to separate into three insulatedwires. Be careful not to cut through the centergreen ground wire insulation.

5 Strip 3/4″ of the insulation away at the endof each of the three wires (L1, Neutral andGround). The Neutral wire is identified bymolded rib along its entire length. The L1(Hot) wire insulation is smooth.

Helpful Information

Things That Are Normal

Noise Explanation

3-Minute

Delay

You may hear a pinging or popping noise caused by water being picked up and thrown against the condenser on rainy days or when the humidity is high. This design feature helps removemoisture and improve efficiency.

You may hear relays click when the controls cycle on and off or areadjusted to change the room temperature.

Water will collect in the base pan during high humidity or on rainydays. The water may overflow and drip from the outdoor sideof the unit.

The indoor fan runs continuously when the unit is operating in thecooling mode, unless the fan switch behind the room cabinet is set at fan cycle (up). This will cause the fan to cycle on and off with the compressor. You may also hear a fan noise stop and start.

You may notice a few minutes delay in starting if you try to restart theZoneline too soon after turning it off or if you adjust the thermostatright after the compressor has shut off. This is due to a built-inrestart protector for the compressor that causes a 3-minute delay.

The compressor shuts off during the defrost cycle. Full resistanceheat comes on during the defrost cycle to maintain room comfort.

To protect the compressor and prevent short cycling, the unit isdesigned to run for a minimum of 3 minutes, after the compressorstarts at any thermostat setting.

Problem Possible Causes What to Do

Burning Odor at theStart of HeatingOperation

Dust is on the surface of • This can cause a “burning” odor at the the heating element beginning of the heating operation. This

odor should quickly fade.

The Air is Not AlwaysCool or Hot DuringOperation

The heat pump is not • This is normal. The heat pump will producing hot air produce warm air but not as hot as air

produced when the higher-cost electricheat is used.

The fan switch may be set • This causes the fan to blow room at continuous fan (down) temperature air even when the

compressor or heater cycles off. The continuous air movement provides better overall temperature control.

The Air Does Not FeelWarm Enough DuringHeating Operation

The heat pump alone • Use the Electric Heat Option. This turnsproduces air that feels off the heat pump and warms withcooler than desired electric heat only.

NOTE: Use of this option will result inincreased energy consumption.
