All clubs in the District are invited to participate in this celebration by having a booth or table to publicize their club and/or raise money. Examples of such activities would be to hold a raffle for a quilt, basket, et., sell packaged coffee, sell popcorn, hot dogs, hamburgers, etc., sell craft items, hold Bingo, or any other feasible activity .

This will be an outdoor event and the availability of electricity may be limited. You would be responsible for providing your own tables, chairs or other equipment (e.g. barbeque grill).

Although we cannot make an adequate estimate of the number of people attending, we anticipate at least 1000 from the general public.

There will be no fee to the clubs for participating and all the money you raise will be kept by your club.

Our centennial committee is meeting regularly to plan this event. It is a major undertaking. In order tofacilitate the planning process we need a response

from your club as to whether or not you will participate in this event.

Your response is needed by December 31, 2016. You do not need to respond as to the specifics of your plan by then (unless you will have one), but we do need a count of the number of clubs planning to participate.

Please let me know by Dec. 31 if your club will participate in this event. I will always be available to answer questions you may have.

Introductions by Zone Chair Patti Lovell: District Governor Jan Weatherly, 1st VDG Ron Smircich, 2nd VGD Sharon Sikes, IPDG AL Hedstrom, PDG Chuck Waid, PDG John Kirry, Zone Secretary Lisa Ikeda, PDG Emerson Bishop, PDG Bill Ellis, PDG Barbara Ellis, PZC Bob Johnson, PZC Terri Soliz, PZC Pat Taylor, PZC David Lee, PZC Doug Wagner, PZC JJ Budzak, PZC Neil Gruchalla Thank you to Sumner for hosting.

District Convention will be held March 31st & April 1st at Red Lions Inn, Olympia.

oPening eyes:PZC JJ Budzak spoke about a great joint project that started 12 years ago, in 2001 Special Olympics and Lions International, Healthy Athletes program. During the Special Olympics Summer Games held at JBLM. Out of the athletes that attended 68% had not seen eye doctor, 37% of those needed prescription eye glasses, 18% needed updated eye glass prescriptions. Volunteers ask the participants basic screening questions, followed by a comprehensive eye screening by Doctors and Optometrist students. They can usually get prescription eye glasses made that same day. Every body gets something even if its just sunglasses. They saw 276 athletes; 73 prescription glasses, 23 sports goggle prescriptions and 158 sunglasses were given out. The annual event is held the Sat & Sun after Memorial Day; Volunteers need Military ID, Passport or the new enhanced Drivers License or ID plus all drivers must have proof of car insurance to get onto JBLM. The next Opening Eyes event is June 3rd and 4th 2017.Membership & Retention: Zone Chair Patti Lovell said the Zone C3 was down on membership by about 13 members. That the Auburn Branch wants to break away from Auburn Noon and become a full club, they are looking for a new location and members outside of their business. as they currently meet where they work and are limited to only having employees as members. The Spring Ahead Membership Drive is a 2017 District project that will ask each Lions Club in MD19 to hold a membership event during the week prior to the start of Daylight Savings Time (Sunday, March 12, 2017). Every one should have

dgma – Zone c3 meetingSpring Ahead cards on table that are to promote our Membership Drive that starts at the end of January. Membership Buttons were given out to membership chairs prior to the meeting.

membershiP:PDG Chuck Waid asked each club to tell everyone about what their club is doing for membership and retention:

Clubs that are up on membership:

KENT: Not present but forwarded their information to Chuck. Chuck said they were down 5 members, that they are working on better communication and a new updated brochure.

FEDERAL WAY: has 38 members, that they give out commitment sheets to all members and ask them to bring in guest, they must call and remind and ask to come to specific meeting, that they are starting a Branch club during the evenings, as many members can’t meet at Noon. That they have a membership table at all projects. Follow up, ask, but always follow up. Looking to improve communication with both mailed and electronic newsletters.

FIFE: Membership ahead, Membership table critical at all project events, PZC Bob Johnson and Angela Davis have been instrumental at getting potential members to visit and the club is having a new mem-ber orientation on November 15th. Looking at show-ing international website videos play at the barn to motivate via Wi-Fi, Mike said that he plans to call members who have not been to a meeting/event re-cently to check on them, should be calling reminding to make sure meeting works for everyone.

Clubs that are down on members:

COVINGTON: Not present

AUBURN: Is re-inventing the telephone buddy, each member has a buddy to contact who makes sure their buddy is aware of the weekly meeting by having a current phone tree. They picked up 3 members from the school district. Their Branch club has 5 members and they are looking to become a new club, is a very active club that enjoys service projects.

ENUMCLAW: Club members are getting older, that there has been a few members who are sick, but their

club is keeping busy and are working hard, president is working with his 24 year old daughter, to come up with a new plan, Enumclaw is smaller community, young people are busy, plans to get them involved at the projects and by having mini meetings at the events they hope to get new members that way.

PUYALLUP VALLEY: Lost members due to moving, death and is an older club, are looking at targeting those aged 55-60 who are empty nesters who have time to volunteer. In the process having an Open House in March.

SUMNER: plus 1 member, focusing on recruiting, has open house committee, updating tri-fold brochure, and using more social media and flyers.

PUYALLUP: minus 2 members, (one left, one death), they are inviting potential members to the projects not meetings. They are planning a open house or informational night, they have received an average of 200-300 hits on Facebook after listing their community service projects every month this allows the community to know what they are doing. Service Clubs of Puyallup sharing ideas and service clubs

BONNEY LAKE: down 5 members, 1 lost to death, meeting with a local Senior housing group to see if they have a Welcome Wagon packet that they can add flyers, etc. to. At the Death by Chocolate both the Deca club and Leos club promoted the Lions club with flyers and they invited students, their parents/grandparents to their events and meetings. Chuck followed up with Ask 1.

District Governor Jan Weatherly, said she has a new member, who she asked to join in order to help pack the apples, since the Hood Canal Club is an older club who can no longer pack & haul apples. DG Jan was happy to find someone from the gym who was willing to do that and who paid membership.

A Lions Club “Open House” PowerPoint: 1st VDG Ron Smircich presented a power point, focusing on the global membership team, district goals, membership growth, our “C3 Zone” goal is plus 20 members by the end of year. We are the only district with growth.

This month we have recruited 70 new members, but lost 50 members and are focusing on the Spring Ahead Membership Drive this March, features recruiting new members, emphasizes and plan a on hosting open house membership event for any day during March 5 – 11, 2017. Entire club must support

open house meeting, MD19 manual available, which is written by PID Roger Richert from MD19.

Remember to follow up with a thank you letter, have a new member mentoring program, welcome the new members, encourage to bring in younger members, this is the only way we can ensure the Lions will con-tinue to succeed as the average age of a Lion is 63.2. There are “Young Adult” membership promotional videos and brochures available. Increase 7 and minus 1, for this month for district.

lerc awards: Judy Ann from LERC the District 3 Director, presented the Trifecta Award to clubs who donated eyeglasses, provided volunteers to LERC and provided LERC with a financial donation. Auburn Noon, Covington (not present), Federal Way and Puyallup Valley all received awards.

When: Saturday, October 29 Saturday, November 5

Time: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Where: 1010 14th St. SW, Puyallup, WA 98371 (street parking)

Why: Meeker Creek does not meet water quality standards for temperature or dissolved oxygen and has elevated levels of sediment. To create better water quality conditions and improve salmon habitat the City of Puyallup has taken the straightened stream and put meanders back to create more natural stream conditions. Volunteers will be planting native trees and shrubs to shade and cool the creek.

Other: This event will take place rain or shine, so please come prepared! We’ll be working along the edge of the stream, so volunteers are encouraged to dress appropriately – boots are recommended. Please be advised that there are no restroom facilities on site.
