Origami Warfare

It was a fresh morning, a light dew was resting on the turf, and the sun was out but it was still very cold, it was the groups first encounter with Leigh Clarke, and the Action unit we were about to start. We came into the room that our group had been assigned for the duration of the unit, strangely I didn’t even take any notice of the perplexing random arrangement of tables around the room. So a few minutes passed and as the room filled up, conversation started buzzing around the room on a few current topics; “How was your Christmas?”, “Get much work done over the holidays?”, Etc. No one was remotely expecting what was about to be asked of us. Leigh then entered the room making his introductions to the group, right then looking round the classroom I could tell he was already starting to capture the currently bewildered, confused group of students who had no idea what was going to happen in the next few weeks.

I assume the majority of the class had bleak thoughts on what was going to happen, after the spectacularly mediocre start to their “Year 0”. Nonetheless it didn’t take long for Leigh to involve people in his up beat conversation on getting to know each other whilst explaining subtly the terms outlook, as this was going on I could really sense a big smile of excitement surge around the room as more light was being shed on Leigh’s plan for the term was starting to re-spark peoples imagination and get them paying attention.

So then it came to the point were he began explaining the days events in a wonderfully broken fashion, leaving aspects less clear than others, with decisions left in the groups hands on how they would chose to act on his words, It all really began with “I’m sure you’ve all notice the four packs of 500 sheets of coloured A4 paper that has been placed on the four groups of tables around the room”.

These are the problems they need to solve, following that is what are we building? What type of planes which is most resourceful way to build them in the best possible way using the least amour of paper.

So it began, at 1300 hours we were told to get going, we had till 1530 hours to finish our work. Also to get all our lobbying with other nations in preparationFor the final decision, whether if we would remain peaceful or if we would destroy all in our path. Ben our elected leader got fast too work organising our nations manifesto. As well as testing the waters with our neighbouring countries. We found early allies in the Green nation who agreed with our peaceful tendencies and were willing to trade with us.

We shared vast researched information in origami weaponry and defence building which we had developed in the morning from books in the library and viewing many Youtube “how to” videos. They in return offered sturdy buildings that they had shown great knowledge in making. Our spy Reis proved very good at his job returning with intelligence regularly, firstly letting us know the Orange and Magnolia nations had formed an alliance and neither had any plan of being peaceful. In fact they were planning on creating a bridge between them each other and using it to help cut our nation the Blue’s off from our allies the Green’s in order to wipe us both out.

There were also rumours that the Magnolias had a rogue spy in there midst with a tendency to be swayed into dodgy deals pitching against his nation going by the name Josh Round. He tried trading bad paper stocks with us for safe haven if he was banished from his nation, which in the end our leader Ben wrote up and agreement with him on.

He then went on too explain that today there was going to be a great war, and that we would be the ones having to fight in it. The radically arranged tables had be strategically places in a certain way to divide up the room in to four island nations, we were then numbered 1 to 4 which then created each nations population.

The paper was our one and only tool, we were only allowed to use our pack of paper to create our nations homes, farms, defences, military. We could make anything we wanted as long as it was made from paper. The catch was that glue, Sellotape, scissors, pens, pencils. Any type of cutting or sticking equipment was banned. Also there was more than just a practical side to this task, more than just readying your island with adequate defences and matching military forces in order to attack if provoked.

We were had to elect a leader, a spy and a head of construction. We needed a strong but fair leader, someone who is open to make treaties and bridge nations with bonds of peace, ready to defend his or her people with sharp tactical military decisions. A spy who is sly but not afraid to dive in at the deep end and put his or her life on the line to gather the best intelligence for his nation to keep them safe from hostile oppressive island neighbours.

And finally, probably the most important part of the nations leaders is the leader of construction, his or her job holds many aspects, firstly knowing how much paper to assign to which part of the nations building processes, how many sheets for defences? How many for the Air force, and how many for the farms, does the Navy deserve more than Air?

Suddenly it was 15:30 and there was no more time to prepare, Leigh asked us questions on our day on how we had gone about organising ourselves. He gave us one final question if any of us were choosing to not fight at all and remain peaceful from paper fighting about to occur, everyone withheld the right to answer the question, but just at the last minute the rogue spy Josh, used his last joker as it seemed bringing forth his contract with the Blues joining our nation in the fight. So at 15:37 total war broke out, the Magnolia’s and Orange’s hit our Island with everything they had and it showed. Also at a mid point in the fight our newest member Josh Round double crossed us and destroyed our entire stock of nuclear warheads and several planes and buildings with a fatal swipe. After 1 minute of fighting our nation was completely shattered as too was the Oranges. On the other side of the bridge the Magnolias and Greens, were still very much in-tacked and had not taken to much flack.

As everyone calmed down after the excitement of the paper fight, quietly people started wondering round and just began looking and photographing all the Origami constructions that littered the entire room, it was a wonderful vast explosion of colour and shape all over the room. An intense fusion of these beautiful colours and designs, that had collided and created this wonderfully uncontrolled design all over the floor.

Imperial War Museum Protest

So we began our Thursday session with Leigh, with a brief lecture on Itten, and his colour theory, and then moved on to recap on basic colour knowledge, talking about Primary, Secondary, Tertiary colours.

Also a small talk on colours in print, touching on CYMK and tints etc, these were just to refresh peoples memories as we probably hadn’t thought basic colour theory since GCSE art. So to get the production ball rolling we started with a quick task in which we were told to paint with our finger a circle the same size as a 10 pence coin, in the same colour as a ‘can’ of Coca Cola.

We could mix the colour from; red, yellow, blue, orange, we had to do this on a A5 piece of card, without cheating and taking a look at either the coin or can. The result was quite interesting, the different tones people thought was closest to the Coke red.

Half way through the day Leigh told us too go away for an hour and a half and have some lunch and to think of something we would like to protest about, and come back ready to make banner’s as we were going to be staging our very own personal protest outside the Imperial War Museum.

We reached the front of the college and not many students seemed to pay a great deal of attention, being used to seeing wacky things going on in the front quad all the time this wasn’t a surprise. But as we turned left passed Elephant and Castle roundabout down St. Georges’ road.

Walking passed the bus stops we were getting lots of attention and a great deal of confused faces, with the vast array of different messages being shown, I would have been hard for anyone to really understand what was actually going on.

But passing beeping cars, school children were assuming that, “its another one of those student protest’s like on the news” I heard one group of young girls say. So after a very windy and loud walk to the Imperial War Museum we took up positions in front of the two large anti aircraft guns in the main courtyard area, were we all started taking pictures and recording the event.

After about 5 minutes of this Leigh gathered everyone together and told that in turn each one of us had to walk up the single path backwards towards the guns and when we reached them we had to shout our message at the top of our lungs, at first everyone started looking around a bit wary of the idea of it.

When we arrived back we were greeted with a pack of A1 paper, matte one side gloss the other a selection of just primary coloured acrylics. Then the task was set we had 30 minutes, to design and complete our protest banner, completed in a way that anyone taking notice of our protest would be captured by our banner and get our message across clearly.

But first we went around the room and heard a few of the class’s ideas for what they had in mind for the banners, a few that stood out to me were “I don’t like green eggs, and ham”, also “My son, My son, What have you done?” Followed by a profile of Nicholas Clegg CBE, and a really personal one was “Bob’s A Liar” a classmates outcry to British plumbers that seem to never show up.

My personal banner was supposed to say “Who ever controls the water, controls the World!” But not judging the size of the characters very well my message ended up spread over both sides of the sheet. Which comically left the back side only saying “Control the World.” If I covered the ‘S’ with my hand. Which in the end became the only message people seemed to see as I held my banner aloft. So it came up to 3 o’clock and it was time for us to head out, everyone gathered there banners and headed out of college excited to see the reactions of on lookers.

But slowly people started edging forward and making a queue and the first people started going up, one after the other. Everyone was having so much fun, when the person would finish shouting the message to the masses, everyone would cheer and clap, and by this point it was getting a bit hectic around the queue everyone wanted to go next the wary looking faces had disappeared and were replaced with eager ones full of big smiles.

This brought us to the end of the protest and the end of the day, Leigh told us to go in to the War museum and have a look at Jeremy Dellers blown-up car, but as we tried to enter the museum the security said that we would not be allowed into the museum with our posters we would have to leave them outside, well not wanting to loose or damage our banners we decided to come back and see it another day.

That happening though made us realise we did more than just turn heads with our ‘personal protest’ we had actually got people paying attention with such a small scale event.

Who’s behind all this?

Never before seen footage of the Kidnapping, and torture of a University Affiliate who remains unknown. We do now know that the Hostage had ties to the University of Arts London, and specifically the London College of Communication. This is both very confusing and odd in a sense of the prime targets for a situation such as this, in no way saying this should have happened to anyone at all, but really? If we make a few assumptions, an “art teacher” wouldn’t be thought to be the prime target for a fundamental groups campaign for attention. But that’s right we shouldn’t assume, most people assume, art students / designers / Art faculty are these Bohemian, socialites who float along not really make much of a fuss about much, or being much of an influence to any sizeable audience. People who believe this could really not be anymore wrong, the designers of this world control everything you do, the way you think, the way you act, the way you speak, the way you dress, they determine what you spend your money on and essentially can control most things you do on the day to day, without you even noticing they have even done it. So really, a highly qualified and well respected designer, would almost be the perfect candidate for something like this don’t you think? Opening our minds more into this, gives us an insight into the people / group / organisation, that are behind this hostage being taken, before we even look deeper into there actions and how they go about there actions in this leaked tape.

As far as what we can tell from the video, the group are white/British, and from London or the surrounding area with what we can take from the accents in the dialogue. From the added shots they have put into there Hostage tape, they focus very much on one of there groups T-shirt, it is black and white printed with a logo that appears to have a strong resemblance of the renowned symbol related to the “Illuminati” or “New World Order”, the pyramid with eye inside its triangular surround. But underneath the image is the words “Don’t Trust Anyone”. Now this is very interesting and tells us a lot about the people behind this kidnapping, if this is as it appears the groups emblem, and tag line. It helps give us an insight into why they have taken this particular Hostage. With like what I said before about being able to control humans through design is such a powerful tool, which with the wrong hands can be exploited for the benefit of many terrible and awful things. With massive advertising agencies, television networks, news channels, governments, all have this super power at there disposal which they can use there mountains of cash to build a big enough gap between the designers that refuse to be apart of brainwashing the world, and the ones willing to fall in line and do the evil bidding of these giant companies that control the sleeping nations of sheeple with there subtle subconscious design espionage. So we think here at “Productive Procrastination” that this group of people calling themselves “Don’t Trust Anyone” are fundamental anti Illuminati, taking a stand against these monstrous companies using this power of control, on the unsuspecting public, keeping them on the theoretical hamster wheel just were these businesses want them. But just to add this doesn’t mean we agree with these acts on another human being, as we do not. We believe there would be a much more peaceful and justifiable way to fight back, but this small group of extremists have obviously found that peaceful tactics will not work and have take matters into there own hands.

The video has gone viral and has been popping up all over the internet every hour, despite websites best efforts to keep the tape under wraps. It’s content is graphic and violent in parts, but mostly just seems to be a warning, a collection of amateur filmed scene’s of the hostage, we believe this will not be the last video of the hostage that will be leaked, it shows the hostage being tortured with electric shocks, and beaten physically, but seems to be more physiological torture than anything. The hostage takers leave the detainee sitting while talking about what there going to do to him amongst themselves while the hostage can clearly hear what there saying and is clearly made uncomfortable by what there saying with his bodily movements, fidgeting lots and shaking his head. They keep his head covered during the entire video, until the very end of the tape where they make the hostage himself hold the camera and film the people that are holding him against his will brandish knives and guns, threatening to shoot him by what we can take from it as the sound quality of the tape is not great and dialogue drops in and out the camera is clearly quite old. From the bad quality of footage and the fact that the hostage is filming unwillingly the video at this point becomes very hard to follow, we cannot confirm this at all, but it does appear one of the men in the video shoots the hostage in a lower part of the body, but with out any actual footage clear enough to tell if this happened we cant be sure. So at this point we don’t know wether the Hostage is dead or alive, and if alive if there is any chance of his survival after his body is put through this terrible ordeal.
