My trainer taught me each term and part of the job one by one, so now I can do it easily. What do you like most about your job? What do you like least? As an Electrician Assistant as well as a traditional Chinese woman, there is no like most or least on the job. I concentrate primarily on how to do the job well. I understand the job requires attention to detail and patience, and after training and practice, I know I can! When the wire connection passes the test, it is the most satisfying moment in my workday. Do you see more opportunities for future development working for a German company? In which way? For me, the first opportunity was the promotion from Cleaner to Elec- trician Assistant. Now I know more about the products and how the Electrician connects the wires, why the process and products work the way they do. I hope I can become an Electrician one day so I can work independently. Where do you plan to go from here in the future? I plan to work for Weiss-Voetsch until I retire in 2023. Weiss-Voetsch (China) is growing rapidly with modern management, which pro- vides us a safe and efficient work environment. For example, we have Thilo’s Suggestion Box so we can send letters to Managing Director directly. That way, we can propose ideas openly to improve the overal conditions at the company. What is the most important lesson you have learned on the job at Weiss-Voertsch? Of course I have learned many skills. Additionally, the most important thing I have learned is how to have fun while on the job. On a more personal note, do you get to spend a lot of time with your family? Do you have children? Yes, I have a 17-year-old son who is in senior middle school. Next year he will go to university after the high school exam. I love to spend time with my son and husband on weekends. What do you do in your free time away from the job? Most of my spare time I spend on housework: cleaning, washing and cooking, etc. I also take care of my parents. Where are you originally from? I am originally from Taicang. What did you do before you worked for Weiss-Voertsch? Did you work in other international companies before, if so from which countries? From 1987 to 2004, I was employed as a textile worker at the Taicang 2nd Cotton Mill, which was a Chinese company. Before Weiss- Voetsch I never worked for any international company. At first, why did you choose to work for Weiss-Voertsch in particular? In March 2004, the Taicang 2nd Cotton Mill closed and I had to look for a new job by myself. Luckily, I found the job vacancy of Cleaner at Weiss-Voetsch in September 2004. After a successful interview, I became a Cleaner at Weiss-Voertsch. At the time, my main aim was to get a job with sufficient income for me. The work schedule is also 8 hours per day, 5 days per week, which attracted me to the posi- tion as it is suitable for me to work and take care of my family. At that time, my son was 13 years old, which is a critical time for a boy. I would like to spend more time on his study and life, and have more influence on his life, so the work schedule at Weiss-Voertsch helps me do that. When you got this job, had you wanted to work for a German company or was it just coincidence? By coincidence, maybe you can call it fate. Is there anything different about working for a German company as opposed to a Chinese company? Yes, very different. In a Chinese company, there are a lot of employees and one cannot see the upper-level manager often. However, in a German company, there are less employees and GMs say hi to me with smile every day, which makes me feel like I am a member of the team. Every year, we have a company trip and a family day. I never imagine have that opportunity through my job before. Chinese and German culture can be quite different in some aspects. Is there anything about working for a Germany company that you haven’t gotten accustomed to? It’s ok for me. At first, my target was keeping the offices clean and tidy. Now I would like to connect every wire carefully. My colleagues at Weiss-Voertsch are very easy to get along with. Tianjin AirCargo Terminal Provides Key Logistics in North China

18th June - Lufthansa Cargo’s Chairman, Carsten Spohr, said: “We have great faith in the Tianjin base.” It was an auspicious opening for the new airfreight terminal in Tianjin. Around 200 guests attended the inauguration, among them prominent representatives of business and political life. In his address at the ceremony, Ulrich Hüsson, Managing Director of Tianjin AirCargo Terminal (TAT), noted that the new airfreight termi-nal had its soft opening on April 12th, and has already handled about 4,000t of cargo, principally for Jade Cargo International and Lufthansa Cargo. The freight included 500t of relief supplies for earthquake victims in China’s Sichuan region.

Carsten Spohr emphasized the major importance Lufthansa Cargo attached to the Tianjin base. In his address, he pointed out that Tianjin was one of the most prosperous business centers in North China. The Chinese government had also declared Tianjin the major cargo gateway hub in northern China, he said. It was, thus, to be expected that Tianjin would expand into an airfreight hub similar to Shanghai, Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

TAT is currently operating with a workforce of 90 employees. The ter-minal is equipped with a warehouse capacity of more than 20,000m2. Lufthansa Cargo has a 46% stake in Tianjin AirCargo Terminal.

Training on 3rd Product Catalogue of China Energy Labels Held Successfully

In order to help the members understand the “Implementation Rules of the 3rd Product Catalogue of China Energy Labels” correctly, and so they would be able to conduct energy registration formalities without difficulty, EuropElectro organized an internal training session for members. It was one of the follow-up actions to the internal seminar held on 8th April 2008. Mr. Wang Ruohong, Director of China’s Energy Label Management Center (CELMC), who is responsible for the management of the center and also a key regulator of implementation rules, is in charge of the organization and execution of inspection measures for market surveil-lance on energy labeling in China. He served as the trainer. During a full day of training, Mr. Wang explained the regulations con-cerning implementation of the 3rd Product Catalogue of China Energy Labels as well as introducing the Chinese energy management system in detail. He also answered participants’ questions. After the training, some participants emphasized that the training was very helpful to manufacturers in the energy registration of their prod-ucts; they were pleased to have many questions resolved through the face to face exchange and unclear points clarified, saving much time and effort.

Potsdam’s Schiller Gymnasium Comes to Tianjin

The fully accredited private Gymnasium from Potsdam will open this coming school term in Tianjin. This will be the school’s first branch outside of Germany “The Gymnasium has dormitory facilities accommodating 300 students from the surrounding area, but also from Vietnam, Korea and other countries,” said Andreas Mohry, the director of the Potsdam Gymna-sium. Negotiations with Tianjin’s Municipal Government started in 2002. “Tianjin enjoys a reputation for excellence in education throughout China. Just a few months ago an international educational conference, organized by UNESCO and covering K-12 education, was held in Nankai District,” Mohry explained. He was a presenter on the foundations of pedagogy at the conference. In addition to the Gymnasium, a Realschule will also smooth the way for pupils not completing an Abitur. “Vocational training plays an important role today in China’s economy.” Mohry added. Everything from senior care, through business and technology, to customized programs following the specific needs of client companies, will be offered. Garners Honors, Collects Donations

Over the past year the Deutsche Botschaftsschule Peking (DSP) has garnered a wide variety of honors. In a ranking of German schools both in Germany and abroad, the DSP came in number 10 of 700 contestants for

its school newspaper - a record which DSP Principal Angela Strath-mann said can be improved, but also makes her very proud. This year’s Abitur was very satisfying, the average score of 2.1 being the highest in the South-East Asia region, and higher than Germany’s average of 2.6-2.7. Finally, the entire school was able to fulfill the standards nec-essary to receive the Deutsches Sportabzeichen, which includes swim-ming and the various disciplines in track and field. Despite the cost of renting a stadium, the effort was well worth it, Ms. Strathmann stated, as it testifies to students’ physical fitness. In addition to striving for excellence in the classroom and on the field, the DSP also engages in numerous interesting projects. Examples are the Climate Protection Program led by Mr. Busch, the partnership with Ulan Bator’s Goethe School, which includes mutual visits, lan-guage lessons, and joint trips, and such projects as the Germany Guide for Chinese Youth studying in Germany, directed by Ms. Pfeiffer. The presentation of a benefit musical program by the school theater group recently also raised more than RMB 50,000, slated as seed money for the reconstruction of a school in the Sichuan earthquake zone. Coor-dinated by Ms. Gong Fleischer, and supported by the DSP, the project is independent of the 8 lighthouse schools which the German govern-ment and German industry and commerce intend to rebuild in Sichuan.

First All-Shanghai-Volkswagen Model Hits the Market

26th June - Volkswagen ’s product range in China was recently extended with the new Chinese-designed and devel-oped Lavida. It combines Asian style with Volkswagen engi-neering, and is available with a 1.6l/77kW and a 2.0l/88kW engine, with either a manual or an automatic transmission. All versions fulfill Euro IV emissions standards. Prices start from RMB 112,800. “The Lavida doesn’t need to shy away from models at a higher price level. 4.6m in length, it offers plenty of room for passengers in the rear seat and a lot of space for luggage, sports equipment, or shop-ping bags as well,” Volkswagen China Group CEO Winfried Vahland pointed out at the launch event. The name “Lavida” derives from the Spanish language, and represents a zest for life, hope and passion. The design does not follow any famil-iar pattern, but exhibits the typical “Volkswagen face” of the future.

Allianz China Life Enters China’s North

Allianz today announced the company’s official business launch in Beijing, after its successful establishment in both the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta. This marks the company’s first step in northern China.

Mr. Bruce Bowers, CEO of AZAP and the board director of AZCL expressed Allianz’s long-term commitment to China. “China is one of the most important strategic markets in the world,” he said, “in Asia-Pacific, we want to expand consistently and continuously in all of our chosen markets. Allianz China Life’s sustainable growth reflects our strategy in the region.”

However, Beijing is not a new market for Allianz, since as early as in 1994, Allianz Group has had a representative office in the city, while its joint-venture partner CITIC Trust, and strategic partner Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) are based in Beijing. The Nest, Beijing Olympics’ main stadium, is designed by the same architects as the Allianz Arena in Munich, probably the most special link between Allianz and Beijing in the year 2008.
