Imaging - WinPE• Windows Preinstallation Environment (WinPE) is a lightweight

version of Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 or Windows Vista that is used for the deployment of workstations and servers.

• It is intended as a 32-bit or 64-bit replacement for MS-DOS during the installation phase of Windows, and can be booted via PXE, CD-ROM, USB flash drive or hard disk.


Imaging - WIM• The Windows Imaging Format (WIM) is a file-based disk image

format. It was developed by Microsoft to deploy its latest Windows operating system releases, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008, which use it as part of their standard installation procedure.

• It works equally well with legacy versions of Windows however, and is used as part of Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs.
