PROJECT OVERVIEW

AUDIENCE

ThisdesignspecificationisintendedforpotentialinvestorsinterestedintheZenterapplication.ItfocusesspecificallyontheAndroidplatform.Oncerefinedallofthedesignelements and interactions can easily be extended to iOS andWindowsPhoneplatforms.

DESIGN PROBLEM

Our project explores the connection between individuals, their goals, their personal health, and their ability to prioritize those areas.

Balancing physiological and psychological states is an importantcomponenttoimprovingqualityoflife. As the World Health Organization wrote in their constitutionin1967,“Healthisastateofcompletephysical, mental and social well-being and not merely theabsenceofdiseaseorinfirmity.”

Todaywearebombardedwithamassoffragmentedbehavioraldatafromvariouswearablesanddigitaltechnologies. Currently, there is no single product which offersacentralizedandcohesiveviewofthatdatatohelpus manage, prioritize, and balance our activities.

Our user research indicates that individuals are generally concernedaboutmultipleaspectsofwellness.Currentlyexisting tools address only one wellness aspect at a time(generallyfitness)andprovidesiloedviewsoftheuser’scurrentstateinsteadofaholisticviewoftheirwellbeing.Ourusersalsoreportedthattheyhavedifficultiesin tracking their activity towards just one wellness aspect because, in some cases, they have to resort to manual loggingoftheirprogresswhichleadstolosinginterestintrackingtheirprogressalltogether.Weidentifiedtheseissues in current technologies and aimed to help the users balancedifferentaspectsofwellnessinauser-friendlyandseamless way. This leads to our design question:

“How can we provide users with actionable insight for balancing their health and wellness by integrating data from existing technologies?”

TARGET USERS & STAKEHOLDERS

Our target users are busy and distracted working professionalswhoareinterestedinmonitoringtheiroverallwellness and are already using wearable sensors or monitoring technologies such as Fitbit, Mint, or Todoist.

USER RESEARCH

USER RESEARCHWeconductedthreedifferenttypesofresearchtounderstand our potential users and the problem space. Weconductedpreliminaryresearchintheformofcompetitive analysis into existing wearable technologies and mobile/web applications as well as secondaryresearchintopreviousresearchfindingsonwellness and motivation. We then deployed an online surveytounderstandhowpeopledefineandmaintainwellness.Lastly,weperformedsemi-structuredinterviewsto gain more personal and detailed insight into what methodsortoolspeopleusetomanagetheaspectsofwellness that are important to them, how they overcome challengesofmaintainingwellness, andwhytheyfailinsome aspects.

Research 1: What existing technologies are available to users for monitoring and manage their health and wellness? Wellnessmonitoringsystemshaveexistedforyears,rangingfromtraditionalmanualapproaches(e.g.workoutlogs,financialspreadsheets)tohigh-techsolutions(e.g.pedometers, heart rate monitors, and more currently wearabletechnology).Mostofthesesolutionsarefragmentedandconcernedwithonlythewellnessaspectthattheyaredesignedfor.

Currently,therearesixwellknownfitnesswearabledevicesonthemarketfromJawbone,Fitbit,Nike,Garmin,Samsung,andmostcurrentAndroidWear.Mostofthesedevicesarerelativelynewtothemarketandareonlyintheirfirstorsecondgenerationofproduction.Allthesedevicescomewith their own native smartphone applications as well as webbasedinterfaces.Thefinancialcategoryisdominatedby applications revolving around spreadsheets on physicalmedia(penandpaper),webandmobilebankingapplications(e.g.Mint,Quicken).Work-lifebalanceisusually monitored manually but can be monitored through web and mobile applications services deployed by the workplace(e.g.Limeade).

These systems allow the users to monitor their data andsometimesprogressfromawebbasedormobileapplicationaccesspoint.Theinteraction(ratherminimal)between the user and the device is usually done through theseoutletsanddoesvaryfromdevicemodels. From this research, we have decided to scope our project toamobileapplicationwhichwouldtakeadvantageofwearable technology that a user already possesses or our proprietary devices.

Research 2: What are the most important factors that contribute to overall wellness? Wewereabletogather27responses:12fromanMTurkgroup,2fromanemotionalsupportgroup,7fromaphysicalsupportgroup,and6fromrandomtechnologyusers.Overall,physicalandfinancialwellnesswerethetop2factorsthatwereconsistentbetweenagreementscale questions and top 3 votes. Based on open-ended responses, theparticipantsstartedoffdefiningwellnessas emotional, physical, and general happiness. The participantsvotedstronglyonfinancialwellnessasitplaysasignificantroleinotherwellnessfactors.Aswediscoveredfromoursecondaryresearch, itisimportanttorecognizethatthesewellnessfactorsarecloselyrelatedtoeach other and should not be observed as separate pillars, andoursurveyresultsconfirmthis.

Research 3: Where does the current process/solution begin to break? What prevents people from being well? Our interview participants as well as usability participants both commented that the current solutions, such as Lose It!,requiretheuserstoinputverydetailedinformationtobeusefuland,therefore,areverydisruptive.Otherexistingtechnologies,suchasFitbit,onlydisplaythefactualdata(e.g.stepstaken)withoutprovidinganyusefulinformationto act upon.

Ourinterviewparticipantswereself-driven,workingprofessionalswhoarealreadyaccustomedtosettinggoalsandhavingorganizedplanstokeeptrackoftheirlives.Theynoted that they place higher priority on work which leads to breakingthebalancebetweenfamily, work,[personal]life, and physical wellness.

DESIGN DECISIONSWhy physical, work-life, and financial? Our user research and competitive analysis revealed that maintaining physical health was a major trend among our audience. While most people did not immediately recognizetheconcerntheyhadforitemssuchasfitness, furtherproddingconcludedthathowusersfeelaboutand perceive themselves physically has a major impact on their day-to-day morale or mood. We observed during our interviews that people placed a higher priority on their work which impacted other wellness aspects like social orphysicalwellness,soitwasimportantforustoincludework-lifebalanceasitsowncategory.Oursurveyresultshowedthatfinancialwellnessisoneofthetop3wellnesscategories, and this was another component that people were concerned about which could potentially have a great influenceonotherwellnessaspects.

Why target working professionals?Competitive research indicates that many organizations are working to implement wellness programs internally as abenefittotheiremployees, indicatingthatmanyworkingprofessionalsstrugglewiththebalancebetweentheirprofessionalperformanceandpersonalhealth.

Our secondary research revealed health risks related to prolongedperiodsofsittingthatoccurduringtheregular

DESIGN DECISIONS

DESIGN REQUIREMENTSVisualizing the “big picture”Datashouldbeenhancedwithcontextualinformationtoshowuserstheeffectsoftheirbehaviorontheirlongtermand short term wellness goals and overall health through intuitive visualization.

Personalization of goalsUsers need the ability to build goals that better match their needs, interests and actual behaviors. Some users may placedahigherpriorityonphysicalfitnessandmightbemoreconcernedwithmakingtimeforthemselves.Usersmight also be interested in goals that are more related to optimal emotional health; or they might want to gain a betterunderstandingofwhatawork-lifebalancelookslikeforthem.

Intuitive prompts Less input, more choices; users need more options that flowfromtheirlocation, biometricdata, andbehaviorpatternsandofferthemexposuretopersonalizedintrinsic motivators. Users should not be required to log their everyday, instead they should have the have the convenienceofchoosingwethertoacceptordeclineactivities which the sensors technology has recorded.

Why a smartphone application?Manycompaniesoffersmartphonecompatibleapplicationsso that employees can access work email accounts on their smart devices. Beyond that, some larger companies provide their employees with smartphone devices in order to enable employeestoaccesseverythingtheyneedfortheirdailyjob,regardlessoftheirphysicallocation.Furthermore,manysmartdeviceshavesomeformofbuilt-insensorswhich allows applications to capture and visualize behavior data.Asmartphoneapplicationwould,therefore,bethemostmobile,relevant,andfeasibleoptionforZenter.

Why proprietary wearable device?Creating a proprietary wearable devices allows Zenter to acquire extra data concerning user stress levels and mood inconjunctionwithfitnessdatathatexistingwearablesandmanymodelsofsmartphonesalreadyprovide.Additionally, any enthusiastic Zenter consumers would able to wear a devicethatwouldalsoserveasaformofmarketingourproductandserveasameansofcreatinginterestinwhatourproductis. Finally,It’sanotheravenuefortheprogramtocommunicatewiththeuserinordertoinformthemof

notificationsthatrequiredsomeactionontheuser’send,creatinganotherpointofinteractionbetweentheprogramand the user.

Why use sensors? The sensors, whether proprietary or third party devices, arepartofthedatagatheringprocesswhichhelpstoinformtheapplicationofuserbehaviorsandstatus.Additionally, thesensorsofferamore“handsoff” approachtouserdatawhichisintendedtoofferatimesaving and intuitive component so that there is less requiredoftheuser(i.e.findandspecifyinghow much time you spent walking, sitting, or in meetings rather than requiring users to manually input each activityandcategorizeit).

Why aggregate data?ThegoalofZenteristogiveourusersabetterindicationofwheretheystandinagivenfacetoftheirholistichealthorwellness.Wellnessisdefinedinthedictionaryasthequalityorstateofbeinghealthyinbodyandmind.People’slives are multidimensional so allowing users a window into onlyonefacetdoesnotofferenoughinformationtoward abetterstateofwellness.Wedeterminedthatusers needtheabilitytoviewthefacetsofwellnesswhere effortswerebeingmadeincontrasttofacetswhichwerebeing neglected.

Why use a doughnut chart?Wechoseacommoninformationvisual(piechart)originally, butalteredittobemorefamiliartousersbymaking it visually similar to the modern charts and graphs ofcompetitors..Piechartsanddoughnutchartsallowinformationtobeviewedinrelationtoawhole.

Why ask for home, work location and work hours?Weneedtheuser’smostcommonlocationinformationtoinformtheprogramwhenusersareatwork.Thesensorsandsoftwarecouldcalculatemood(stresslevels)atwork,atdifferenttimesofday,andatmeetingsincomparisonwithmoodathome.WealsohopedtousethisfeatureincombinationwithbuiltinGPStoinformtheuserwhenthey had exceeded their normal work hours and help them maintainormanagework-lifebalancegoals.

Why ask to confirm notifications?Theideabehindconfirmingactivitynotificationistwo-fold;ononehand,wegatheraccuratedataandbehaviorfromthe users, where we allow the user more control over what activities count toward their wellness goals, and on the otherhand, weremindusersoftheiractivityfortheday. With our one-click to “accept” or “edit” tasks, we try tokeeptheusersengagedandawareoftheirpatterns in a seamless and less-disruptive way.

Activity RecommendationsOur user research indicated that users want more actionableinsightorinterpretationoftheirdata.Zenter’s learning algorithm will analyze the user’s past performances, currentenvironment, userspecifiedgoals, andcurrentwellnessstatetoidentifyareasofimprovement.Forexample, iftheusertendstoworklonger hours than desired, her physical wellness category isfallingbehind,andhermeetingin20minutesisinabuildinghalf-mileaway,Zenterwillalerttheusertowalktothe next meeting destination and illustrate how this activity could impact and balance her overall wellness.

Activity NotificationsOur user research concluded that users quickly lose motivation when they are required to manually input data towards goals (e.g. Lose It! and logging detailed nutrition information).Inordertohelptheusersfromhavingtologtheir individual activities, Zenter tries to interpret the user’s behaviorandcontextualizetheinformationtocomeupwithapredictionforanactivitythatbestdescribestheirbehavior.
