started in 2006 with the purchase of five sisal handbags. Seven years on it has

evolved into a women’s project where it trains disadvantaged ladies in the skills of jewellery design and manufacture, life

skills and assists with income generation.

When Angela’s friend, Joanne was diagnosed HIV+ and her husband passed away, Joanne and her young daughter Barbara

were thrown out of their mud floored shack in Nairobi’s Kibera Slum. There were many battles and hardships and after

trying different small jobs Joanne and Angela decided they would try selling ‘African bags’ in Australia.

With the profit from selling the first five bags Joanne was able to buy another 23 bags. When these sold, Joanne bought

another 30 and decided to also try selling jewellery which she bought in the market.

In the meantime, Angela had learnt how to make jewellery and on returning to live in Nairobi, Kenya in 2011 decided that

she would train other disadvantaged women to make it.

Beads are synonymous with Africa…the bright colours, earthen tones, and of course, the semi- nomadic tribes with their

beautifully adorned women.

In 2011 Angela started training a group of four ladies. After 12 months she moved to train women in a street women

project. Here she was able to train both the project staff and the homeless ladies, with approx. 25 people becoming skilled.

In 2013, Angela has been training a group of Muslim adults from the Borana tribe of Kenya. As the project expands and the

jewellery sells, Angela wants to both train more as well as employ more ladies.

For the past year, Njoki has been working with Zawadi African Designs making their beautiful jewellery. Njoki was one of

the first four ladies that Zawadi trained in 2011. Njoki’s life, and the life of her family has changed through her involvement

in Zawadi. Her four children who were not in school, are now all in school, she is able to pay their fees, provide food for her

family and pay rent. Her life has changed.

Zawadi’s aim is to empower women. Training women in a skill that can generate an income is the most effective method of

lifting a family out of abject poverty. Our philosophy is to give a ‘hand up’ not a ‘hand out’.
