The reigning Miss Southern Uni-versity for 2014, Ayanna Spivey, 21, from Moreno Valley, is a third gener-ation Southernite who will present a history of Southern University & A&M College at the March 16 Sun-day in the Village.

Jean Byers, Director of the Zach-ary Historical Village told the Zach-ary Post, We are very pleased to have Ayanna Spivey join us for our Sunday in the Village event which is designed to showcase the culture and contributions of the African-Ameri-can community.

Ayanna will join Mrs. Sadie Roberts-Joseph, the Director of the African-American History Museum in Baton Rouge. Mrs. Roberts-Jo-seph will present African-American Achievements in our countrys his-tory. Ive seen her presentation at least twice before and it is awesome. She highlights many of the African-Americans who have become lead-ers in the medical field, in the field of law, in the military, politics, and even as astronauts.

Mrs. Roberts-Joseph is a noted historian, lecturer and writer, Byers added. She collected so many arti-facts and historical documents that she finally needed to open up a mu-seum.

The opoen house is Thursday from 4-6 p.m.

Museum developed by Mrs. Sadie Roberts-Joseph is located at 538 South Blvd., Baton Rouge just north of the I-10 Mississippi River Bridge. Other activities Mrs. Robert-Joseph is involved include the Juneteenth Cel-ebrations.

The goal of the Sunday in the Vil-lage in downtown Zachary is to enjoy coffee and conversation with friends before and after the presentations by Mrs. Sadie Robert-Joseph and Ayanna Spivey. The March 16 event from 3-5 p.m. will be held at McHugh House, one of four houses located in the His-torical Village at 4524 Virginia Street.

We had wanted to hold this event during the month of February which is officially Black History Month but the ice and cold weather kept causing us to postpone the event, Byers said. I talked with Mrs. Roberts-Joseph about holding it in March and she was very agreeable although it was the not the correct month.

Mrs. Robert-Joseph said that ev-ery month should be American His-tory Month for everyone. She point-ed out that every cultural history in America is so intertwined with every other culture in American, that we should showcase all cultures.

Mrs. Robert-Joseph also empha-sized the importance of teaching cultural history year round in our school system, not just one culture for one month.

What I hope to see personally from these events is to open more dialogue between the different cultures in our state, Byers said. Louisiana and especially this part of Louisiana was a real melting pot of cultures. We had the Spanish, French, British and the Cajuns from Nova Scotia all in this area.

From Baton Rouge to St. Fran-cisville, including Port Hudson, the Plains, Zachary, Clinton, and Jack-son, are as unique an area from a historical perspective as anywhere in the US. The Mississippi River was the dividing point so to speak for our country for many years in the late 1700s and early 1800s, so we have much history to be proud of and leave for future generations.

Theres still time to apply for Leadership North to learn firsthand hand about the North Capital Region community, economy, education, business and industry, government and public service as well as culture and social services.

Zachary community and business leaders along with the Chamber of Commerce congratulated Angelia Landers March 3 on the one-year anniversary of her Cabbas Grill. The restaurant serves steaks, seafood, salads, po-boys and dozens of other popular dishes at 5810 Main Street, Main Street Plaza, Zachary. The rib-bon cutting was a family affair. day evening showcases the Zydeco Man himself, Rockin Dopsie Jr. and his Zydeco Twisters band. The Lake Charles American Press says this about the Zydeco Man: Hes boogied with James Brown, packed the House of Blues, played at the White House, and traveled to more cities than a Greyhound. Critics hail him as one of zydecos most cherished symbols and a party seems to break out whenever and wherever he and his band show up.

The Carnival will start on Wednes-day evening and run through Sunday afternoon as in previous years, said Prejean. The Carnival and Midway hours on Wednesday and Thursday are 5-9 p.m., Friday 5-11, Saturday 10 a.m.-11 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.-6 p.m.. Im sure the Crawfish Boil on Fri-day night will be a huge success. The cost is $25 per person for the 6 PM till 9 PM event. Tickets can be bought in advance through the Chamber, at Landmark Bank, the Bank of Zachary and the Animal Center. Our Crawfish Boil will set the table for great Fri-day night with Rockin Dopsie and his Zydeco Twisters band.

We also have the Miss Zachary pageant that begins on Saturday, March 15th at the Zachary High School Per-forming Arts Center, Prejean empha-sized. Miss Queen and Teen Queen will represent Zachary throughout the year, and all Queens will appear in the Zachary Christmas parade and Z-Fest.

The Miss Zachary event is a Sun-day Best dress type pageant, not a glitz pageant. Any girl who wishes to

participate needs only to wear a nice Sunday dress in the age group to 10. For ages 11-16, the dress is a long for-mal or party dress. For the oldest age group of participants, 17-23, the dress will be a prom dress. For more infor-mation and to register for the pageant, contact Rhonda Gerald at [email protected]

Saturday is a really big day for the Z-Fest. It begins with a bang when the Carnival and Midway open at 10 a.m. and the runners in the 1 Mile Run sprint from the starting line. Fifteen minutes later the more serious-minded runners will leave the starting line on a 5K run. At 11 a.m. and lasting until 2:30 p.m., will be the school and com-munity groups, and the Fashion Show on the Main Stage of the Z-Fest. Also starting at 11 a.m.: the Swamp Kings ATV Show.

Taking the stage at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday will be local folk rock duo, Nickels and Dimes. The group travels regionally for shows, and features Cul-len Davezac, age 25 and Carson Du-cote, 24.

At 7 p.m. on Saturday evening, the Todd ONeill Band will take the stage to wrap up the music venue. Todd ONeil has concocted his own recipe for seriously soulful, heartfelt and rockin country music. ONeil and company are scheduled to play until 10.

I love Zachary, and I love my job with the Zachary Chamber, Prejean related in closing. Our Chamber members have a deep love for our community, as I do. That is why the Chamber is so involved with the Lead-ership North Program, Lunch and Learn and other activities. We want our leaders to be able better represent Zachary and prepare for its future in-cluding our annual Z-Fest.
