Lane Auxiliary Seeks New Volunteers

Do you know someone with extra time on their hands? The Lane Region-al Medical Center Volunteer Auxiliary is looking for new members to help pro-vide many services within the hospital.

Auxiliary Volunteers are asked to commit to just 2 - 4 hours per week to be considered an active member, and dues are only $4 per year.

Auxiliary Volunteers contribute to Lane in many ways, such as directing guests at the information desk, distrib-uting ice, water, coffee, mail and maga-zines to patients, providing information and helping family members in the emergency room and various waiting rooms, visiting with nursing home resi-dents, and manning the hospital Gift Shop.

Hospital volunteers are very special people dedicated to helping others. Join-ing the Auxiliary is an excellent way to share your blessings, meet new people and make new friends. Your time and effort will make a difference to the pa-tients and families at Lane.

To become a Lane Auxiliary Volun-teer, contact the hospital Gift Shop at (225)658-4309.

BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo Receives National Award for Marketing Campaign

BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo was recently selected to receive the Na-tional Kudo’s Marketing Award by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). NRPA will present the award publicly at a spe-cial reception at the association’s 2013 Congress & Exposition in Houston, TX on Wednesday, Oct. 9.

Each year, NRPA National Awards are presented to individu-als and agencies across the U.S. to honor their efforts-both professional and personal-in the field of parks and recreation. Recipients are se-lected from a pool of applicants by NRPA’s National Awards and Schol-arship Committee, and are chosen for excellence in a variety of topics, including professional and volun-tary service, programming, leader-ship, research and public outreach.

For BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo, the overall message of the 2012 mar-keting campaign was “Geaux Wild.” This particular message was chosen for its double meaning: “Geaux” is the colloquial version of “go” in

Louisiana as the word often de-notes support for something. Using the phrase “Geaux Wild” helped the Zoo create a message of “support our wildlife conservation efforts.” Geaux Wild’s second meaning was a call to action: go to the Zoo and see what is new at your commu-nity’s Zoo.

“The Geaux Wild campaign was exceedingly effective in creating public awareness. Our community immediately identifies with the word “Geaux,” and the Zoo capi-talized on this instant identification to lend authenticity, reconizability and likeability to our Zoo and parks system,” said Mary Woods, former Friends of the Zoo Marketing Di-rector.

A zoo creative team brainstorm-ing session led to the 2012 “Geaux Wild” marketing campaign which was created, designed and imple-mented by Woods, Kris Bordelon, Graphic Designer for BREC and Erin O’Neill, Publicity and Market-ing Manager for BREC.

Dr. Tommy Gould, Family Prac-tice, has joined the staff of Zach-ary Family Practice located at 2335 Church Street, Suite E, in Zachary.

Originally from Baton Rouge, Dr. Gould graduated Summa cum Laude from LSU, earned his medical degree at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport, and completed his residency training in family medicine at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

During medical school, Dr. Gould was elected into Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) as a junior. He is currently a member of AOA, as well as a mem-ber of the American Medical Associ-ation and the Louisiana State Medi-cal Society.

He and his wife, Heather, have recently moved to Zachary with sons Gage and Mason. They are expect-

ing their third child in December. “I chose Family Medicine because

I was interested in providing compre-hensive primary care in a commu-nity setting,” says Dr. Gould. “I am very excited about raising my family in Zachary and joining the growing health care community at Lane.”

Brittany Barbay, a Zachary High School softball player, has been chosen to play in the 2013 Tuscany Tournament in Italy. Recommended by a four-year LA Univer-sity Coach, Brittany was selected to repre-sent the USA as both player and ambas-sador on the 14-player roster in the 2013 Tuscany Tournament in Grosseto, Italy on July 21-July 30th The tournament is an excellent opportunity for athletes to foster international goodwill and friendship among nations, while also promoting the game. Except for the Olympics, there are few opportunities for athletes to experi-ence the competition, history, and culture of other countries on an international level. Brittany will be wearing the USA uniform proudly as a great representative for Zachary and the surrounding South Louisiana area. Superior Ford is sponsor-ing her trip to Italy.
