Albany Area Chamber of CommerceAlbany Area Chamber of Commerce Mission StatementMission Statement
“To support and improve economic vitality and the quality of life of businesses and the community “To support and improve economic vitality and the quality of life of businesses and the community through collaborative political advocacy, economic development, programs and services”through collaborative political advocacy, economic development, programs and services”
“Where’s Waldo” is a game in which a cartoon character with a striped shirt and glasses is hidden in amongst vividly colored scenes set in a children’s book. With each new page the scenery changes
and Waldo is hidden somewhere amongst the distractions of the page. The viewer is further challenged in spotting Waldo because of several imposters also hidden amongst the scenery. The object of this simple hide and seek game is to be the fi rst to spot the true Waldo character before another player. My fi rst experience with this game of “Where’s Waldo” was with my nephew, Brennan, as just another activity to keep a four year old busy while in my trusted care. Playing “Where’s Waldo” with a young child may sound like a fun, easy game until you realize how quickly that same child can spot “Waldo”. Let’s just say that I am quite a bit older than my nephew; however my more mature age did nothing to prepare me for this game with this particular competitor. I am convinced that as an act of encouragement Brennan would allow me to spot “Waldo” a couple times but in the end I truly was at a disadvantage. His excitement for the game was what made it fun. He took such delight in pointing to the newly discovered Waldo with a smile and childish giggle, only to rush headlong onto the next page to begin the pursuit anew, somehow knowing he was beating his Aunt. One usually doesn’t feel the need to compete with a four year old but in this case it became almost embarrassing how poorly I was performing at this game. I knew he was aware of how this game was played however this particular book was a newly found edition, so how was this four year old taking such advantage of me in this situation I began to wonder. Was it that my inexperience with this Waldo character contributed to my downfall for I had to remind myself exactly what Waldo looked like time and again? I would repeatedly mistake an imposter for the real character only to be reminded of my error when the true Waldo was revealed with a giggle and a page turn. As the game continued and we progressed through the book I began to search less for Waldo and started to observe my tiny competitor more.
It became clear that my nephew’s entire focus was on the task at hand and that his experience with other Waldo books gave him a sharp advantage over me. As much as I wished to stay focused on the pursuit of Waldo my mind would wander. I would get distracted by other things on the page, or begin thinking about the next activity we could do when I tire of this one. Before I knew it Brennan would discover Waldo and onto the next page we went. After I realized that focus and experience beat me out in this game it became more palatable than actually coming to terms that I truly was not more observant than a four year old. In Business we look for “Waldo” in different ways whether it is new customers, stronger relationships with existing customers or expanding our company’s presence in certain markets. The Albany Chamber of Commerce would like to extend an invitation to use us as a resource in fi nding your company’s “Waldo” by participating in the Albany Business Extravaganza on Wednesday, September 24th. The 2014 Albany Business Extravaganza sponsored by Blue Sun, Inc; Central Willamette Community Credit Union; Fisher Funeral Home, Inc.; Linn County Expo Center and Republic Services is a chance to showcase your business and network with other professional business leaders and potential customers. Start your day at the Expo Center with the Membership Forum Luncheon beginning at 11:30a.m. September’s forum speaker is Coach Wayne Tinkle, Oregon State University Men’s Head Basketball Coach followed by the fun, friendly and sometimes vividly colored booths featuring over 100 Albany Chamber Business Members. If your business has not yet signed up for a booth, spots are still available. Thank you to all our sponsors and our participating members for making this event possible. There are still opportunities available for your business to sponsor an upcoming event, host a Greeters or Business After Hours and advertise in the monthly newsletter. Contact the Chamber offi ce to fi nd out more about these opportunities before with a giggle and a page turn your business gets left behind in the pursuit of “Waldo”.

For the past 18 months the Albany Area Chamber has been working on a joint collaboration between local leaders from business and industry, educational institutions, and state and local governments, to increase the number of qualifi ed and technically skilled workers that will meet the growing employee needs of local industries and businesses. After months of research and discussion the Workforce Development Task Force recognized that to move these goals forward the Chamber needed a person on staff dedicated to the program. The director will be responsible for meeting the day to day program goals; elevating and advancing the workforce development program to students, industries and businesses, parents, educators, and other organizations, etc.
The Chamber is pleased to announce that Josefi ne Fleetwood has been hired as the Workforce Development Director. Josefi ne comes to this position from the Salem Chamber where she was the workforce development specialist for the last two years, prior to that she was the business to school liaison with the Greater Albany Public Schools for 5 years.

Personal Background: Born and raised in Roseburg, OR, Liz relocated to Southern Oregon where she attended SOU and received both her Bachelors Degree and her Masters in Management while graduating both programs with honors. Liz had a long history of working in the non-profit sector in management positions prior to accepting a position with Express nearly four years ago. Liz relocated to Albany nearly a year ago and has enjoyed becoming more involved in the business community. Some of the organizations Liz has become involved in include Altrusa International of Albany where she serves as a Board Member, ABC House Fundraising Committee, and Mighty Oaks Fundraising Committee. This past August Liz married the love of her life, Gerzon Ramirez. They enjoy going on adventures with their furry co-pilot Morris.
Business Marketing Niche: Providing professional human resource solutions to our valued clients, helping them to meet their staffing needs while assisting in managing their on boarding costs. Liz passionately strives to help as many people as possible find great jobs while helping as many clients as possible find great people.
Biggest Issue Facing Albany: Like many communities across Oregon, Albany is trying to contend with several employment issues. First we are facing a skills gap in the available workforce and the needs of local businesses. At the same time we are competing with other communities in Oregon when trying to attract new business to our community and foster job creation. As a community we need to strengthen the relationship between education and employment and emphasize the opportunities in skilled industrial fields. We need policies on the local level that are not only supportive of business creation in our local community but are attractive to outside businesses looking to relocate to our beautiful community.
Chamber Involvement: Member of the Young Professionals Committee as well as regularly attending Greeters, Business After Hours, and Forum/Women in Business/Young Professionals Luncheons. Liz Looks forward to an even greater involvement in the years to come.
