Letter from Grand Master Chan K. Yu

I extend my warm welcome and sincere congratulations to the invited guests, master instructors, blackbelts, and members of Yu’s Academy.

Yu’s Academy members are a group of dedicated Martial Arts practitioners of all ages and belt ranksfrom around the world.

If one man of great faith can move a mountain, as a Koreanproverb says, I am sure that millions of devoted martial artists in thecountry can make a better America and World by helping our youthwith self-discipline. We must help our youth develop their trueconfidence in mind and body.

It is our duty to devote ourselves to bettering the moral andacademic health of society. There is an old Korean saying that says,“It takes a year to harvest a crop, ten years to see the full beauty ofa tree, and 50 years to make a man.”

Yu’s Academy has developed students who seek an attitudethat goes beyond the confines of athletic achievement and subscribesto a philosophy of integrity, discipline, and respect which can be

integrated into the very fabric of their lives.

Yours Truly,

Grand Master Chan K YuFounder, Yu’s Academy

Letter of Student Dedication:

BEST WISHESON YOUR

TWENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY

Twenty-five years ago you began an amazing journey. You left the country that hadbeen your home with hopes and expectations that none of us could hope to under-stand. Regardless of what you may have hoped for please know how thankful each of us isthat you were willing to take that tremendous step of faith. You faced the challenges of anew language, new customs, a new life style, not to mention the work involved with starting anacademy while providing for your family here and in Korea. Looking back I am sure that itsometimes even amazes you how much you have survived. However, you havedonemuch more than survive, you have flourished. You have taught hundreds of students, changed a countless number of lives and still continue to reach out to new people all of thetime.

Grand Master Yu, your story is one that many could not understand because they donot understand the dedication, the love, the determination that it takes to do all of the thingsthat you have done for all of us who have known you over so many years. So few people cansee beyond today. They are not able to envision the future or lay the foundation fortomorrow. Some who do try to build fail to remember that foundation must constantly berepaired, restrengthened, reinforced so that continued growth does not crush the very founda-tion. You have always remembered that and helped all of us to remember where we startedand to guard against working only on the new without maintaining the old. You have taught usto respect one another, to share with one another, and to never give up no matter how hard lifemay seem. For with a “Sound Mind in a Sound Body” and the support of everyone in Yu’sAcademy we can all continue to grow and spread the things that you have taught usthroughout this country that was once foreign to you, but now have become your home. Mayyou know that regardless of where any of us might go that there is always a home for you inour hearts and minds and we will cherish not only the years that we have spent together but theyears we will yet share in the future.

God Bless You Always,

David L. Duvall, Master InstructorYu’s AcademyMaryville, MO

The Black Belt JourneyI came to martial arts seeking the fulfillment of two objectives. The primary objective was to provide my oldest son an activity that wouldinstill confidence and self esteem under the guidance of a strong moral leader. The other objective was to find something for myself thatcould be a stress reducer and provide physical conditioning. A vague awareness of eastern martial art philosophy coupled with anendorsement of martial arts by a renowned psychologist brought together the idea to pursue these objectives. About this time we made anacquaintance of a family moving to St. Joseph from Tulsa. A comment was made that they were excited about moving here because theirson could continue his martial arts under a world renowned Kwan Jang Nim whose academy was in St. Joseph, Missouri.

My first encounter with Yu Kwan Jang Nim was overwhelming. Overwhelming because my son was teary eyed and Yu Kwan Jang Nim wasnot what I had expected. I don’t know what I was expecting, but what I found was a caring man, a man with morals, wisdom, and strongprinciples. I knew at that moment I would enter martial arts not only for physical training but more importantly to learn how to live a fulfilledlife by becoming enlightened. I had no doubt the same would happen for my son thereby fulfilling my initial two objectives.

In writing this testimonial I’ve had to look back over my life. I’ve come to realize that although the many steps I took to arrive at the presentnow seem inevitable, even obvious, the truth is, at the same time, each step could have gone another way. I recognized early in my life thateducation was my own personal north like a point on a compass. My parents always talked about the importance of learning and knowl-edge and showed by example how to pursue learning and knowledge. Our home life involved more reading than TV watching, we didthings as a family, and I sincerely felt my parents liked us. We were taught responsibility and commitment within our home. I was encour-aged to try new things and face problems as they arose. During my early teen years, Boy Scouts helped me understand commitment andresponsibility out side our home. I earned my Eagle Scout by age 14. I was taught respect for parents, teachers and mentors. I acceptedrespect for others as a way of life and through respect and education I was able to stay true to my north. All this came together andallowed me to pursue my dreams. My dreams of having a wonderful wife and family and becoming a doctor.

As I prepare for certified Ill-Dan black belt, I see reflections, as if looking in a still clear pond, of my work in martial arts. Yu Kwan Jang Nimhas given me time to reflect on everything in my life. Yu Kwan Jang Nim is a central figure in my life and became one 2 ½ years ago. Hisdedication to teaching martial arts and the martial arts way of life brought forth a dedication to him as my Kwan Jang Nim. I have so muchto learn from Yu Kwan Jang Nim about life. I do see him as a valuable mirror to enlighten my soul.Kam Sa Hamnida Kwan Jang Nim for this moment.

Reflections of my life show different paths all leading to a common point. That common point is doing my best and never quitting. Thetenants of martial arts are ideal in describing what I always held as parts of doing my best. From becoming a Eagle Scout in the BoyScouts, to becoming a surgeon the work getting there has always been the same. The subjects were different, but the effort was the same. Each seemed very hard as the moment passed and I did it! When Jackie and I chose to have children we agreed to do our best. When myoldest son reached school age I wanted to do something with him that would give us our time together. That seemed like yesterday (and inlife it was) and now we are testing for certified Ill-Dan black belt together.

The instruction and guidance I’ve received while learning Hap Ki Do to this point have been incredible. Yu Kwan Jang Nim and everyinstructor are excellent teachers. In the process of reviewing my notes in order to present them to Yu Kwan Jang Nim, I realized how muchmaterial and knowledge I have learned. I understand I am now continuing my life in martial arts. I would like to pay tribute to my instructorsand assistant instructors by using them as examples of the embodiment of the tenants of martial arts. Each instructor has given me clearand real life examples of the tenants of martial arts. Hopkins Sa Bum Nim embodies courtesy. From her style of teaching children toproviding strong instruction, her graciousness and respectful ways have taught me the living meaning of courtesy. Duvall Sa Bum Nimdemonstrates integrity through his soundness and sincerity and strict adherence to principles. Holding course to action, belief, andpurpose without giving way, Bix Sa Bum Nim’s steadfastness has taught me preserverance and self-control. Stewart Sa Bum Nim’s andErickson Sa Bum Nim’s inability to be overcome or subdued in both mind and techniques make excellentexamples of indomitable spirit. The descriptions are not exclusive, as all the instructors convey all thetenants of martial arts. These reflections I see of their living examples of the tenants of martial arts.

I bow to Yu Kwan Jang Nim, my Sa Bum Nims and Boo Sa Bum Nims, senior belts, fellow martial artistsand to my beautiful wife and loving children. Kam Sa Hamnida.

Your humble student,Robert Remis, 1st Dan

Editor’s ColumnFirst, I would like to thank Stephen Cook 4th Dan for his hard work and

assistance in making this yearbook. Much of this yearbook is a reflection of hisdedication to Yu’s Academy.

I have always wanted to create a yearbook for the students so they couldget a feel for the history of the school. I hope this is the first step in creating amore detailed and comprehensive book about martial arts.

This yearbook is a culmination of 35 years of teaching thousands of dedi-cated martial artists. As I look back, I realize that I have learned so much morefrom my students than I possibly could have taught. I thank all of them for theimpact they have made on my life. Without the dedication and effort of thestudents, the Academy could not have grown asstrong as it is today. They are the pillars of Yu’sAcademy.

The Black Belt JourneyIn the summer of 1979 I walked into Yu’s Academy, looked around, then turned and walked out. I was single at the timewithout a care in the world. Little did I know that 17 years later I would return, only this time I brought my son along.

When we began taking classes I was told that we have joined a “family.” I soon realized this, it is in every sense a family. Youlearn to respect your elders or senior belts. I have learned to ask the seniors if I can leave the mat, just like when I wasyounger asking my mother or father to leave the dinner table. I have learned rules that apply to the Academy, just like rules thatapply around the house.

Remember how you looked up to your Grandpa or Great Grandpa? He always had wisdom and knowledge. Master Yu is justlike that. We look up to him for wisdom and knowledge, but he doesn’t stop there. I’ll never forget what he said to me oneday. He said “You have problem, I fix it.” He has been a counselor, a teacher, and a true friend to me. Like Jesus we aredisciplines of our Master. I ask him how shall I serve you best? He says “go out and teach others like I have taught you.”Leading by example is what Master Yu does. Through discipline we learn to treat others and teach others with respect. Thesevaluable teachings are worth far more that our tuition.

Yu’s Academy has been a progressive Martial Arts School since the early 70’s. The Adopt-A-Family program at Christmas isinspirational. The caring and sharing displayed at the Academy fills the air with love and acceptance. Theteachings and memories that I have will last forever. This is truly an experience of a lifetime. I look forward tothe future years at Yu’s Academy.

David Kidwell, 1st Dan
