I’ve never fully understood why certain emotions, certain people, or certain circumstances grip us with intensity and wont’ let us go. As a Christian I believe it is the Holy Spirit who purposely placed Brian on my heart and despite how little I know of him he is part of my thoughts every day. Brian is a young Caucasian male who has attended the After School Program for two years. He be-gan coming the fall of his sixth grade year and despite his inability to build relationships with staff or students he faithfully was the first to arrive at Tenth and Lehman every day. Brian is very slight in stature that resembles the 75 pound weight class at a High School wrestling match. His clothes despite his conformity to the school code of dress are often dirty and poorly fit. Brian is very socially awkward and has trouble even look-ing at you when talking. His responses to congenial questions like, “How was your day?” or “how was school?” are responded to with nods, grunts, or groans. At YFC we love the Brians of the world and we know that God who created him in His own image loves Brian. However the painful part of this story is that the Brian who excitedly walks into YFC, proud to be first to ar-

rives and reaches for the remote to play his favorite video game is often at school, home, the streets, and even at YFC is a victim. Last Spring as Brian entered our City Headquarters he asked for the game of his choice and picked out his favorite remote. As usual he sac-rificed the snack table to guarantee he was first to play his favorite game. Just then four older teenagers walked in the front door, failing to sign in, grabbed handfuls of snacks and the other three controllers. Since they were a foursome looking around they saw Brian with the fourth controller. It didn’t take them long to bully him into giving up his precious game. Brian came to my office in tears to reveal his side of the story. Sadly that’s the last time Brian has ever stepped foot in our down-town headquarters. The good news is I’ve seen him outside YFC on four occasions and he has poured out his heart to me. I wish I could say that his pain was limited only to his home, the school, and the streets but it filters in to YFC as well. The young men who were responsible for this disrespect were disciplined and did apologize to Brian, however short of God’s grace we will never know the deep scars that the bullies of the world leave behind.

Jordan was one of those teens that came out to Senior High club and you could just see the anger in his eyes. He was quiet and didn’t say much. But he was tough; he always mentioned how he would beat up anyone that messed with him. One night our session topic was about name-calling. Sometimes, I explained, we believe the names that people call us actually dictate who we are. Con-sequently, that hurts us in our everyday lives and also our growth with God. The leaders took teens one at a time and asked them to share some of the names they have been called. We then prayed that God’s truth would penetrate their minds. We prayed that the teens wouldn’t let those nega-tive names have any power over how they viewed themselves. When it was Jordan’s turn to share with me, I was shocked. The names his own mother called him were vulgar and unrepeatable. I couldn’t fathom how any parent could call their child these names. No wonder Jordan was so angry. He stopped com-ing to Youth For Christ because he was sent to boot camp. Jordan’s anger resulted in him getting beat up a few times by other campers while he was there.Eventually Jordan ended up at a place that helped him to start dealing with his anger. Jordan came back to YFC his senior year and is noticeably differ-ent. He has been humbled and softened by his ex-periences in the various boot camps he attended. Jordan does have questions about faith and God, but can’t bring himself to surrender and put his faith and trust in Jesus.

My name is Jose I live with my aunt. I was taken from my mom because I was abused. I am al-ways made to do things I don’t want to do but when you don’t live in your house I guess that is the way things go. I’m in fourth grade. I do like school and try my best to pay attention. I usually get in trouble be-cause when I am picked on I always get angry and do something back. I just don’t know why people don’t listen to me. I am always asking a lot of questions because I want to know things. It’s not easy living where you’re not wanted and moving to a place that is the same except mom-my is not hurting me.

Hello, my name is Rebecca I am in 5th grade I have a big family. We all live in a small house I usu-ally sleep in the living room. I am the oldest of all the kids but I am not treated that way because I am not like everyone else. I go to a special school everyone always calls me dumb but I’m not. I really like school and learn a lot I just need a little more time to learn things. I get upset very easy and tend to pout and go in a corner when something is bothering me. I love some of my sisters and brothers. My mom and dad live with us they can get upset at us a lot.

The following stories are the reason we ask for“Bid’s For Kids” . . .

What about all our stuff? No wonder they say I have anger management issues.

the high Life noW You tell me to stay in school and get an education to make something of myself and have a good life. I see things differently. Why should I be stay in in school for the next several years to have people tell me what I should do? I can have the high life right now. How much money do you make in a week? Yea, well I can dou-ble that maybe triple it if it is a good week and the people are buying. You see all I have to do is to wake up when-ever I want, stop by my supplier’s crib to pick up the goods, wait on the corner for the buyers to come and purchase. Discrete and under

cover. The give and take hap-pens so quick you might miss it if you blink. Most of my buyers are from outside the city so they don’t know me and I don’t know them. they drive away and my pocket gets full of cash. I just have to split it with my supplier. I’m one

of the best. Bin in the biz for almost two years now. You talk about a future. I

don’t have a future. I’m follow-ing the foot steps of my big bro and uncle. It worked out well for them. For a while anyway. They got stupid. Bro’s in jail. Uncle got shot.

So you see, I’m going to live life the best I can. I’m going to live life for the here and now. I might get shot at, and even put in jail for a time. But for now I’m living my life. I’m the one that’s in control. I’m happy. I’m free. Oh and by the way. My girl, she is pregnant. I’m going to be a daddy.

told by Julio - age 15

I’m following the foot steps of my big bro and uncle.

The “eviction notice” they called it. A nice word for get-ting kicked out. I remember it as though it was yesterday. The letter said that we had 48 hours to get out. But where will we go? What about all our stuff? Joan, a friend of the family who was liv-ing with us told my mom was go-ing away for several weeks for business training. But I doubted it right from the start. My mom hasn’t had a steady job for a year now. My dad has been in jail for half of my life. Something about a business deal gone bad and he had to defend himself. Mom said something about bad police not doing their jobs and framing him for it. Anyway, so mom is suppos-edly away for job training come to find out she is actually in a drug rehab. A case worker showed up

the other morning and said she would do her best to find a place for my younger sister, two younger brothers, myself and Joan. Where is she going to find a place for all of us and our stuff in less than 48 hours?

Appartenlty mom didn’t pay the rent for the last six months and has ignored all the previous leters. No wonder they say I have anger managment issues. This whole thing explains why strange people

were coming and going at all hours of the day and night. And why sometimes mom was looking and acting funny. It also explains why it seemed we never had enough food in the house. But I love my mom. She was the only one who stayed with us. But where will we go? What about all of our stuff? Where do we go with it? Maybe if I hadn’t gotten into those fights at school. Maybe if my bother wouldn’t have all those issues and have to take all those meds. Maybe if my sis-ter wouldn’t have kept asking for all that stuff. Maybe if my other bother wouldn’t have punched all those holes in the walls. May-be, just maybe mom could have kept it together without all those drugs. But now where are we go-ing to go? Where are we going to go with all our stuff?

told by Kyle - age 14

Wishing you much success on your fundraiser. We thank you for all you do for the youth of

Lebanon County. Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it. Prov. 22:6

Weaber Inc. and the Weaber Family

the high Life noW I was called over to the YFC girls’ intern house. Max had showed up at their door with a huge gash on the side of his head. He and his drunk father had just had an altercation. Max got knocked down and slammed his head into the edge of the coffee table. He ran out of the house and went to the nearest safe place he could think of: the girls’ intern house. I

took Max to the emergency room, and he was worried. “What should I tell the doctor when he asks what happened?” wondered Max. He did not want to be removed from his home. Max was fearful that if he told the truth, his dad would be reported and all of the children in the home would be taken away.

Max was a Christian, but he did not want to tell the truth about his father. I encouraged him otherwise. I reminded him that he, unlike many other kids he knew, had a family unit. It wasn’t per-fect. We knew that. Max’s father was abusive on occasion. But we knew Max loved his father and his family. So we prayed. We asked God for courage so that Max could tell the truth, and we put the consequences into God’s hands. The doctor arrived and asked what had caused Max’s injury. Max responded with the truth about his father. The doctor asked a few more questions and did not think it was neces-sary to call any agencies to get involved. Max got stitched up and went home. Thankfully he did not have anymore incidents as serious as this one. As Max grew up and continued to experience the faithfulness of God, he felt the Lord’s calling on his life. He has entered the ministry and is now a youth pastor, reaching out to kids with similar backgrounds as himself.

“If someone hasn’t been in your life for sixteen years and now they suddenly want to come back into your life, should you let them?”

This question from the back of the van surprised me as I drove senior high kids home from club one Mon-day night. The 16 year-old girl was struggling with this question. Maria really did not know her dad. She had spent years burying the pain of the thought that he walked out on her so long ago. He never tried to initiate contact un-til now. She had to evaluate whether it was worth the risk to open herself up to a father she never knew. Would he like her? Was she good enough? Would he run again? Maria did decide to let her father back into her life but was very cautious. She soon perceived her father had some agenda he was trying to accomplish, and she quickly put an end to the relation-ship.

On July 20, 2010 the YFC cabin was complete-ly destroyed by arson. Many have expressed a deep sense of loss. However, we have been deeply moved by the support we have received to rebuild. Many in-dividuals, businesses, and groups have volunteered to help with the rebuilding process. We are grateful! Our building committee has finalized the floor plans and has received the building permit. We are soliciting contractors and businesses for contributions of labor and/or building materials. Assuming that the project comes under budget, we will begin construc-

tion in mid-March. As you can see, the excavators have cleaned up the site and have begun digging the basement. Other crews are constructing a room to house the generator and a shed for firewood. Others have begun cutting firewood. We have great hope that God will enable beauty to rise from the ashes! Our log splitter was destroyed during the bur-glary. We need $750 to match a gift given towards a new log splitter. This will make the firewood crew very happy!
