We’ve all been there; it’s a day before Halloween and you have no idea what you’re going to do. You have no costume ideas or

plans for the evening. We’re here to prevent this from happening to you. These tips are sure to make your Halloween way better than last year.

Costumes: The first step to a great Halloween is a good costume. You want a costume that is original and fun. -Rosie the Riveter: You can take a stand for women's rights with this empowering costume, and it’s super easy! All you need is a

red bandana, long sleeve jean shirt, a 1940’s updo, and a pair of blue jeans. -Waldo/ Wenda: Everyone will be looking for you in this fun costume! You could even make this a couple/friends ensemble. All

you need is a red and white striped shirt and hat, black round glasses, and your choice of either jeans or a jean skirt. -Minnie/ Mickey Mouse: This is truly a ‘last minute’ Halloween costume. For Minnie just throw on a red skirt, black top, black

jacket, and Minnie Mouse ears. For Mickey just wear a black long-sleeved shirt, red shorts, and a pair of Mickey ears.

Plans: Plans are what make Halloween so enjoyable. If you don’t have anything to do, your Halloween is going to be a bust. There are simple ways to spice up your Halloween and have a great time: Hanging out with your friends: Rent a scary movie, make popcorn, and invite all your best friends for a sleepover. You can all

suffer through the horror together. Haunted Houses: Want to have terrifying nightmares this Halloween? Go to a haunted house with your friends or even by your-

self. This is an overlooked aspect of Halloween, but a fantastic way to spend your evening. Bands in the Boneyard: This is a fun way to spend your Halloween. You get to watch choreographed performances while listen-

ing to talented musicians perform beautiful ensembles. Now that you have this knowledge, you can make this the best Halloween you’ve ever had. You have an original costume and

When I first walked into AJHS on the very first day, I felt very scared and intimidated due to the

fact that I came from a very small school. I did not know anyone and I was so lost. I knew I was going to

be lost for a little while but eventually I would find my way around. I had to push myself into doing things

that made me feel uncomfortable, like making new friends and exposing myself to situations I have never

been in before. I was sad at the thought of this because I had left me best friends and I had no one I

could talk to that knew everything about me, and my life at school every day.

Now looking back on the first day, a month later, it wasn’t so bad at AJSH as a brand new student.

I now have made some friends and have learned my way around. I have started to feel comfortable

coming to school every day. I have started to get to know my teachers as well, and enjoy the classes

every day. I know when I come to school that even though I am new, I know I belong here as a student

and I will continue to grow and prosper from a great education! I look forward to what is in store for the

rest of the year! ~ Alyssa Sieple

This year we have some new faces to the Jr. High staff,

but not to Abington. One of our newest teachers is Mr.

Paul Auh, he is an 8th grade English teacher in the Lion

Community. He has been teaching for fourteen years and

was previously at the Sr. High School. We sat down with

him to get to know Abington Junior High’s newest staff

member.

Mr. Auh has two older sisters and one brother, who is also

older. When he was younger he wanted to be a firefighter,

but later wanted to be either a lawyer or a teacher. As a

kid he had various job experiences, from working in a fac-

tory making fried pork grinds to pressing tuxedos all day,

or working at a fertilizer plant. He didn’t have a specific idol

growing up. Mr. Auh says he doesn’t know if he would

consider them special talents, but he learned how to speak

a little bit of Russian in college, he does calligraphy, and he sometimes makes pasta by hand. In Junior High,

he wrestled, although he claims he wasn’t very good. He attended college at the University of Chicago. Next

he attended the University of Pennsylvania for law school, which is what brought him to Pennsylvania. Mr.

Auh realized he wanted to be a teacher because he had very good English teachers. He became very inter-

ested in becoming a teacher in 11th and 12th grade when he had a great English teacher, who he tries to teach

imitate.

Mr. Auh teaches English in the 8th grade Lion community. Mr. Auh says after all of the jobs he worked

when he was younger, he is very grateful for the opportunity to be teaching in the Abington District. He enjoys

his job very much and claim it’s interesting, yet challenging. He also says that it’s nice to influence people in a

positive way. The most challenging part of his career is having to be prepared because there are deadlines to

meet, but even though he has been teaching for a longtime it’s still hard to meet all of the deadlines.

Some words that Mr. Auh lives by and tells his students, “I will push you to the finish line, but I will not

pull you.” It was something his old wrestling coach used to say to him. ~ Sierra Dahling

Entering a new school year at Abington Junior High is an adjustment for stu-dents and teachers alike. This past summer, Abington hired in new English teacher and I’m sure it was a big adjustment. I had the privilege to interview her and discuss with her a bit about what it is like to be “in her shoes”. She was asked questions such as “Where did you attend high school and col-lege?” and “What kinds of extra-curriculars and clubs did you participate in?” (including a few others). Her answer revealed just how much she loves her job and wishes to give her students the best education she can provide.

Ms. Courtney Bishop is a 9th grade English teacher here at Abing-ton. She attended Souderton High School where she participated in activi-ties such as lacrosse and the environmental club. In addition, sang in her school choir and played the flute. But, her main focus in high school was photography. ‘I put all my time and energy into going around the school tak-ing pictures,” she says. Since graduating from high school, she has been back to visit only now her original high school building has been demolished to create space for townhomes, much to her disappointment. Ms. Bishop attended Temple University and has fulfilled her childhood dream of becom-ing a teacher.

When asked if anyone or anything inspired her to do what she is doing today, she responded with a simple yet meaningful answer: “my moth-er”. Ms. Bishop admired the way her mother went about her job each day. Watching her interact with other teachers and experiencing her ability to work with students so well greatly inspired her. In fact, for Ms. Bishop, it was always her dream to become a teacher. It was a dream so big that she had a classroom set-up in her room and would insist on playing school with her sisters. Fueled by admiration for her mother’s teaching ability, Ms. Bishop attended Temple University and is now a teacher here at Abington.

We all will and have given up on something in our lives. It will be or already has been something we regret doing. For Ms. Bishop, it was the flute. “Yes, I really do regret it. It was just some-thing I found challenging and gave up because of it,” she says. But, the question that really revealed Ms. Bishop’s best quality as a teacher was this: “Are there any parts of your job that you find challenging?”. Her response was truly awe in-spiring. “I think it would have to be finding time for each of my students throughout the day” she says. Whether it be finding time to answer a student’s question or helping them with an assignment, she struggles to find the time to help each and every student in one day. Her response to this question really hit home simply because it shows how much she really val-ues the education of each and every one of her students. Abington has made a wonderful choice in hiring a teacher who has passion for what she does and cares about how well she is doing it. It was truly an enlightening experience to meet a teacher who has failed and given up on things in her life but still pursues what she loves ~ Catherine Fantuzzo

As many of you know the election for president is well on its way. The U.S. Presidential Election is happening on Tuesday November 8th, 2016. It is great for us because we have off of school, but the adults have the responsibility of choosing our next president. This year our Republican nominee is Donald Trump. He has his ups and downs. One of his downs is he can sometimes be perceived as racist and disrespectful to women. Although he is will-ing to take care of our soldiers and help fight the wars that need to be finished in a successful way. Our Democratic nominee is Hillary Clinton. She has her downs and ups too. One of her downs is that she does not care as much about our soldiers as Trump does. One of her positives is that she will fight for women's’ rights. At this point the third party may end up coming close to winning. Many people think and believe that us as kids should not have to worry about who is running and who would fill the job as presi-dent. But, it is so important to us mostly because whatever happens at the election will impact our future. Maybe school isn’t a great place for speaking our opinions, we can still have the opinion and just not let it cause any drama. At this point I am not sure who is going to win but all I can say is good luck to all. And whoever wins I wish them the best and hope they will do the right things for our country. ~ Emma Warner

Fact 1: Internet Addiction Disorder is a mental disorder identified by psychologists! -IAD was originally proposed as a hoax but doctors took it under serious consideration. It is bro-ken into subcategories such as gaming, social networking, internet shopping, etc. It can be diagnosed and there is therapy.

Fact 2: You’re more likely to have a heart attack on a Monday! -According to researchers, a lot of people experience excessive amounts of Adrenaline, especially those who work on Mondays. Data shows that Mondays can be the most stressful day of the week.

Fact 3: You can’t snore and dream at the same time! -Snoring reduces REM (Rapid Eye Movement). This is the kind of sleep where dreams occur. Without REM dreams are less likely to happen.

Fact 4: Recycling one aluminum can save enough energy to power a TV for 3 hours! -By recycling one can, you can power a TV for 3 whole hours. Making beverage cans from aluminum cans cuts air pollution by 95%. Those are some pretty good reasons to recycle!

Fact 5: 95% people text things they would never say in person! -Technology rules our lives. Could growing technology seriously hurt your social skills later on? I believe so. As more and more people use technology to make hard things easier to say, our ability to verbally communicate may dwindle. ~ Emma McGinley

When you think of Boy Scouts, or any type of scouting, what do you think of? Let me guess..... community service, camping, protecting the environment, or just kids wearing weird uniforms. Well I am writing to tell you that scouting is all of the above and much more! The Boy Scouts of America has been in existence for over a hundred years and it is one of the largest youth development pro-grams in the United States. The focus of the program is to help teach responsibility, values and leadership through educational and

fun activities.

I have been involved with Boy Scouts for the last five years and it has been a great experience. Scouting is a great way of meeting new people and challenging yourself to try new experiences. Scouting has taught me many skills that I can use throughout my life such as organization and planning, survival techniques and tolerance for others. Now that I am a Life Scout, my role is to mentor younger scouts and support them in their advancements. Whether it is working on merit badges, organizing community ser-vice events or teaching new songs around a camp fire, leadership and comradery are also expected. As I am currently working to-wards my Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Boy Scouts, I've taken on the role of Senior Pa-trol Leader. My fellow scouts have acknowledged my leadership skills by electing me into the Order of the Arrow. The Order of the Arrow is a brotherhood of scouts where we have to put to test everything we have learned over the years. We had to survive one night without shelter and one day with minimal food and continuous labor; and this all had to be done

without talking.....something that was very difficult for me to accomplish!

Through scouting, I have developed many new interests such as fishing, bird watching and meteorology. Scouting has helped me develop the confidence to explore new adventures. Our troop was just selected to participate in a high adventure sailing trip to the coral reef in the Florida Keys next June. Here we will be instructed by a captain on naviga-tion, fishing, sailing, snorkeling and cooking for seven days on the Hunter Sailboats. What an experience this will be for all of us! This is something I would have never thought about

doing if I wasn't involved in scouting.

While the uniforms could use a little improvement, what I have gained in friend-ships, experiences and leadership skills certainly has more importance. But in the end, we are all wearing our uniforms with much

pride throughout our community. ~ Zach Quintois

INSIGNIA, by S.J. Kincaid, is an exceptional story about a teenag-

er’s journey through World War III. Tom Raines, the teenager in

question, lived with his gambling dad, and Tom only got them into

hotel rooms by betting money on and winning Virtual Reality

games. When playing a VR game (after going to VR school, of

course), he gets noticed by the military. After that, he flies to the

Spiral and gets enlisted in the army, but a little too enlisted for his

liking.

This book captures surprise, joy, anger, suspense, and so much

more. I recommend it to everyone, and it is easy to get a hold of,

as it is fortunately at our wonderful library.

In 10 years the human race will have likely arrived to Mars, and it will have all been thanks to Mars One. Mars One is a global effort

coming out of Netherlands, for humans to essentially colonize Mars. And fun fact, they actually are unrelated and unaffiliated with

NASA. NASA even said themselves said, “No commercial company without the support of NASA and government is going to get to

Mars”. However, this non profit organization is trudging along and the first thing they need is you. Well, Mars One has already made

their selections, but let's pretend that has happened yet for the sake of this article. So the question is, would you actually go to Mars?

However first, let's go over the requirements. Welp. Everyone who has literally any disease or condition ever that exists, can't go.

Even the smallest amount of asthma for when you were 5, will hold you back. Yup, if you have any physical conditions - no alien

friends for you. This is also includes any psychiatric disorders, or mental health diseases. And yes, while not important but odd, you

can literally be too tall (6 ft 2inches) or too short (5 ft 1inches) to go to Mars. You also have to be an English speaking, literally perfect

human intellectually, and educationally. Summarizing the rest of it, you basically have to have top notch with adaptability skills, prob-

lem solving abilities, and creativeness if you would like to be one of the first humans on Mars. So if you’re still potentially reading this

and happen to be Albert Einstein himself, you could possibly have yourself a one way ticket to Mars. But now, is the question would

you actually want to make the journey.

So let's say you've been you're considering becoming one of the first twenty colonizers, If you were chosen, you would be simultane-

ously be giving up the next 10 years of your life training and

essentially becoming an expert astronaut and scientist in

preparation for your journey in 2028. A trip that has already

been delayed twice now. And if you frequently get motion-

sickness during a 2 hour drive to your grandma's house?

Good thing Mars is only 33 million miles away from Earth or

essentially a 7 month space expedition. Also, if you’re a vam-

pire and have no friends and family, you would probably be

perfect considering Mars One has no plans to ever come back

being a one way trip only. Mars One does claim to give you

unlimited contact with them, (ie Facetime, texting, calling, etc)

but considering you are 33 million miles from Earth, I'm sure

the connection will be just fantastic. So let's say the whole

Mars One project as a whole isn't a fake scam, you are the

perfect human being physically and mentally, and you don't

care if you never see your loved ones again, then attempt the

grueling interview process. Good luck!

3D printing, an art, science, and hobby, is rapidly revolution-izing the world. Now, we can make anything from action figures to furniture from the comfort of our own home. Soon, we may even be able to print human body parts! I absolutely love 3D printing, and I want to share my passion with you.

The Past To start off, we will have to take a trip back to 1983, when the 3D printer was invented. To learn about 3D printing, we have to learn about how it was created. Chuck Hull is the mastermind behind 3D printing. Hull is 77 years old and the executive vice president and chief technology officer of 3D Systems. One day while working for a fledg-ling company that used ultraviolet lamps to make table coatings in 1983, Chuck Hull suggested making computer models into prototypes. Mr. Hull then received a lab for him to toy around with during his free

time. One night after months of experimenting, Hull’s idea came to life. To quote Chuck, “The class of materials is called ‘photopolymers’ and these are typically acrylic-based materials that would be liquid until they’re hit with—let’s say—an ultraviolet light. Then, they instantly turn solid.” Basically, you have a liquid that you arrange and then heat to a solid. That’s not much different than baking! Now let’s fast-forward to five years ago, when fourteen year old Easton LaChappelle created a prosthetic limb out of Legos and spare parts in his bedroom. He got the idea in seventh grade after seeing a little girl with a very simple prosthetic arm that had cost her fam-ily eighty thousand dollars. Now, LaChappelle is nineteen and the owner/founder of Unlimited Tomorrow. At Unlimited Tomorrow, Chappelle and a couple of his friends print prosthetic limbs using 3D printing technology.

The Present Now that we’re finished with the history lesson, I’m going to tell you about some of the ways 3D printing is used today. First of all, 3D printing is a big part of medicine. Doctors use 3D printing to plan surgeries, make models, prosthetics, and much more. In aerospace, you can quickly and efficiently test models before you build them. Now, 3D printers can tweak very small details any way you want, so it is easy to make the exact model of what you are going to build. Also, you can make as many models as you want from little to no cost (the only cost would be to get more filament). Another way 3D printing is used today is in fashion. Designers can see a 3D model of their article of clothing and even put a cool edge to it. Also, instead of measuring with a ruler and having the chance of measuring wrong, you can type the exact size you want onto the 3D program. It saves fashion designers valuable time and money. There are so many other ways 3D print-ing can apply to real life, but I can’t name them all in this article.

The Future Now that I’ve covered the past and the present of 3D printing, it’s only fit that I talk about the future. There are so many possibili-ties for 3D printing that I will only cover a few people’s outlooks. Peter Friedman, publisher of Innovation Investment Journal, came up with the idea that car dealerships might include printers with the cars they sell so that their customers can make their own replacements for mal-functioning parts. To quote part of an article Friedman wrote in Innovation Investment Journal, “3-D printing is not just the future of making things you don’t have, it’s the future of making things that you do have immortal.” Anthony Atala, leader of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine, speculates that in a couple of years, there will be machines in hospitals that print skin onto a patient’s body. Atala said, “Skin is the least complex organ,” “…we’ll see tubular structures, then hollow and then non-hollow organs.” When asked, “Including, eventually, a heart?”, Atala replied laughing, “I hope in my lifetime. And I’m still very young.” Atala was fifty-four at the time. (Continued on Page 9)

How This All Applies to You If you have found throughout this article that 3D Printing is something that you enjoy, I have a way that you can turn 3D printing into a hobby. If you download a free 3D design program, you can design 3D models from your own computer. If you are a beginner, I would recommend 123D Design, which is what I use. I only don’t use the more advanced program, Blender, because I don’t know how to use it. If you have a finished design, you can print it at the 3D Printer at the Abington Senior High School. You may have to download a print studio, but I’m not sure what brand of 3D Printer the ASHS has. 3D printing is a good thing to learn, and not just because it is a lot of fun. Someday, 3D printing might become a very important thing in all of our lives. If you learn how to 3D print now, it will be a lot easier in the long run. ~ Jesica Schneider

With school finally starting, everything is a bit hectic. While managing your classes, keeping up with friends, and getting your homework done, you may have heard a lot of Harry Potter news going on. With the new movie, plays, books, and the upcoming festival in Chestnut Hill, everything may be a bit confusing, but it’s also very exciting!

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is the new Harry Potter movie coming out in November starring Eddie Redmayne. His character, Newt Scamander, travels to New York in 1926 with a case of dangerous mag-ic creatures, and some manage to escape. As a prequel to the original 8 mov-ies, the characters we know and love from the originally series will not be in the movie. Overall, the movie seems to be full of adventure and thrill!

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (Parts 1 and 2) are plays now showing in London. The script for both parts is available for avid Harry Potter fans, too. It is about Harry Potter’s son, Albus, and Draco Malfoy’s son, Scor-pius, and their adventure with a magical object that controls time. Harry Potter fans are giving mixed reviews, so if you are skeptical, you may just have to read it yourself!

J. K. Rowling is releasing more books from the Hogwarts libraries. The new e-books were released on Sept. 6th. The first book, Hogwarts: An Incomplete and Unreliable Guide, shows us the way around the school; where to go, how to navigate the moving staircases, and the secrets of the school. Short Stories from Hogwarts of Power, Political and Pesky Poltergeists is a book of horror and gore, including stories from the Wizarding World’s prison, Azkaban. The third book, Short Stories from Hogwarts of Heroism, Hardship and Dangerous Hobbies, will tell of the staff at Hogwarts.

The Harry Potter Festival is October 21st and 22nd, 2016, on Germantown Ave. in Chestnut Hill. Rex to Willow Grove ave-nues, Germantown Ave. will be completely shut down for Harry Potter fans to roams the streets. “Potterheads” dress up and meet look-alikes of the most beloved characters in the streets of Chestnut Hill. Almost all stores add Harry Potter themed merchandise, so bring your “galleons” and “sickles” because you can buy Potter - themed items. So bring your wand, show your house pride, and meet characters at the 2016 Harry Potter festival! ~ Vivian Sapovits

Recently, I went to spend a week on a small farm that belonged to a family friend. It was something I had wanted to do for a long time, and I was very glad I had the opportunity. I had an amazing time, and this is a recollection of my experience. I love to travel, so, a year ago, when my parents asked me if I wanted to take a trip, I said yes with no hesitation. I had always been interested in farm life. To me, it seemed a charm-ing way to live. My mom’s friend from college owns a small farm on Whidbey Island, two hours outside of Seattle, Washington, and that was where I was going to spend the last week of September; on a farm, just like I had always been interested in. My dad and I were going to fly to the Seattle airport, and he would drop me off at the farm, for a week, then go to visit his family in Vancouver. It might seem strange to stay on a strange farm, for a week by my-self, but I was excited for the adventure. The morning of the trip, we rose before the sun, in order to catch a train that would take us to the airport. Two flights, one ferry, and a car ride later I was standing in the dark driveway of a wooden house, connected, by an extension, to a barn that loomed in the night sky. I saw a short silhouette on the wrap-around porch, illuminated by the lights behind. “Welcome!” The person got closer and I could see it is my mom’s friend, who I had met the summer before. We went into the house, and as we walked into the back room, I saw a large

window framing a picturesque farm scene. Even though it was night, the moon and stars shone brightly on the yard, and I caught my first glimpse of the horses and donkeys that called this place home. I was introduced to my mom’s friend’s husband and two sons before I was shown my room. I barely had time to look around before my head hit the pillow and I was fast asleep.

The next morning, everyone was awake by 8:00 so that they could take care of the animals. As I made my way from my room to the kitchen, I passed three different cats and I was amazed when I found out they owned six cats and were soon getting an-other one. The air was chilly as I followed the family to the pasture, where they fed unfathomable amounts of food to their three don-keys, four horses, and ten chickens. They usually had cows and pigs living there too, but they had either butchered or sold them at this point in the year. All the different kinds of animals lived in the same area and would all play with each other. There were times where all the animals would randomly start running around the field, just for fun. It was amazing when all the animals would just walk up to someone in the yard and circle them until they were shown attention.

I always knew that it was a lot of work to live on a farm, but taking care of the farm and the animals was a TON of work. Throughout the day all the animals had to be fed at least three times, and each animal needed different food, different types of medi-cine, and different amounts of food. The gigantic water buckets needed to be changed every three days, and the whole process took about a half-hour. Tree leaves would have to be raked out of the pasture, because certain leaves were poisonous to the horses. Eve-ry other day, the animals needed to be exercised, whether they were taken for walks, or ridden. One day of the trip I went to the food supply store, and huge bags of food and supplies were purchased, all that would be used up within a short amount of time. Taking care of animals is a lot of work, but it is also kind of fun.

Somehow, besides all the farm work, we found time to do other things. While I was there, they made multiple pies with ap-ples from their trees, and they also made jam with a fruit, called a quince, that their neighbors had given them. An interesting meal, for me, was when we ate one of their pigs in the form of bacon. It was strange to eat an animal that had once had a name. One of the days, we walked the donkeys and the mini horse down to the beach. The donkeys did not like the water, but the horse went splashing through the waves. I went horseback riding through the blueberry fields behind the farm, and I got to meet the cows that had once lived at their house. The family was very creative, and they made toy ani-mals, stuffed with alpaca fur. They carved wooden bears, using a chainsaw. I even got to help make a chainsaw carving. Before I knew it, my week on the farm was over, and I had to return back home.

I had a wonderful experience. I am so glad that I was able to learn what it was like to live on a farm, even a small one, and that I got the opportunity to have such a great adventure. If you ever get the chance to do anything like this, do it.
