Roanoke, VA has been known as the “Star City of the South” since this 88 foot light was first illuminated at the top of Roanoke’s Mill
Mountain in November 1949. It currently glows in red, white and blue each
night as a memorial to the tragic events of 9/11 and is visible for miles.
