Shaunavon will host a special piano recital tonight featuring two award-winning musicians.

The show, entitled “Culturally Appropriated Piano Classics,” will feature international prize-winning pianists Rhea Kim and Samuel Deason.

The event is being described as both a recital and an artistic statement with political implications.

Cultural appropriation has turned into a hot topic in recent years and has become a crusading issue for some people who believe that the bor-rowing of artistic ideas and cultural expressions from other cultures should be banned or severely restricted.

Cultural Appropriation has been defined as tak-ing intellectual property, traditional knowledge, cultural expressions, or artifacts from someone else’s culture without permission. This can include unauthorized use of another culture’s dance, dress, music, language, folklore, cuisine, traditional med-icine or religious symbols.

But Deason argues against that point of view and wants to ensure that experiences can be shared by people of different cultures.

Deason uses the work of classical composers as an example of those who have created something special by borrowing extensively from other cul-tures.

“Composers have often written in the musical language of other cultures and the results have been fascinating,” Deason told The Standard.

He doesn’t want the sharing of cultural experi-ences - whether it is music, art or another form of expression - to be restricted through legislation.

“(Our concert) is an artistic and a philosophical statement against those who would make cultural appropriation illegal,” Deason told The Melfort Journal earlier this month. continued next page.

“There have been all sorts of instances around the continent and this country of art-ists, chefs, painters and novelists receiving social condemnation for their portrayal of for-eign cultures.”

The concert in Shaunavon will take place at the Centre Street United Church on Wednesday, August 2.

It’s part of a cross-Saskatchewan tour that will bring the pianists to more than a half dozen communities, including Melfort, Tisdale, Saskatoon, North Battleford, Yorkton, Marysburg and Preeceville.

The show is highlighted by selections featur-ing iconic composers such as Gershwin, Brahms, Mozart, Chopin and others.

Deason and Kim will perform solo numbers as well as five selections where they will share the piano (four hands, one piano).

“The recital will feature music which has been written in a cultural style foreign to each respective composer’s nationality,” explained Deason. “ As an artistic and philosophical statement, the concert will make implicit the domain of artistic expression and freedom of speech which must remain untouched by those who wish to legislate against its performance. Our hope is this music remains to be per-formed and enjoyed.”

Deason was in Shaunavon for an Arts Council performance in the spring of 2016. He enjoyed his stop in the community so much that he wanted to make a return visit.

Tickets for tonight’s show will be available at the door and are priced at $25 for adults and $5 for students and youth. The concert is sched-uled to start at 7:30 p.m.

Deason is a recent prizewinner of the Hastings International Piano Competition in the UK, and of the Kerikeri International Piano Competition in New Zealand. He has per-formed concerti by Gershwin, Khachaturian,

Prokofiev, Liszt-Busoni, and Shostakovich with orchestras across North America and Europe. He has performed extensively across Canada, touring under the auspices of the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils (OSAC) in 2016. Recital performances include Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations for the Master Piano Recital Series in Ottawa, and two recitals at the Dame Myra Hess Series in Chicago, broadcast live on WFMT 98.7fm. Born in 1988 in Saskatoon, Deason studied Bonnie Nicholson, with Marc Durand at the Glenn Gould School, Menahem Pressler at Indiana University, and Boris Slutsky at the Peabody Conservatory. He will begin his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree at Northwestern University this fall on a full scholarship. In his spare time, Sam enjoys for-aging for mushrooms, following the NFL, mathematics, and reading.

South Korean pianist Rhea Kim has demon-strated her unique musicianship throughout the world. Her performances feature a breadth of repertoire ranging from Francois Couperin to George Crumb. She has won numerous priz-es throughout South Korea and has appeared performing solo piano works and chamber music internationally in Italy, Spain, U.S.A, Canada, and South Korea. Ms. Kim’s concerto performances have featured Grieg’s Piano Concerto with the Oberlin Community Orchestra and the Ravel G Major Piano Concerto with the IU Student Orchestra. Ms. Kim graduated with degrees from Indiana University, and Oberlin Conservatory of Music. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Music in Piano Performance and Literature at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music with the French pianist, Jean-Louis Haguenauer. She serves as the Artist Director of FBC Bloomfield Friday Concert Series, and teaches at Indiana University’s Young Pianist Program and Summer Piano Academy.

A tough U.S. Marine sergeant got word that the father of one of his men had passed away. At roll call he snapped, “Hey, Smith, your father died!” The Marine fainted on the spot.A week later the sister of another Marine died, and the sergeant once again called his men togeth-er. “Jones,” he yelled out, “your sister died last night!” The Marine burst into tears. Finally, word got back to the gen-eral about the sergeant’s insen-sitivity, and he was called on the carpet and told to be less direct and gruff when one of his men suffered a tragedy.A week later the sergeant was no-tified that Private Miller had just lost his mother.Remembering what the general had said, he lined up his troop and ordered “Everyone whose mother is alive, please take one step forward - not so fast, Miller!”

Have you ever told a white lie? You are going to love this — especially all the ladies who bake for church eventsAlice was to bake a cake for the church ladies’ group bake sale, but she forgot to do it until the last minute.

She baked an angel food cake and when she took it from the oven, the center had dropped flat.

She said, “Oh dear, there’s no time to bake another cake.”

So, she looked around the house for something to build up the center of the cake.

Alice found it in the bathroom … a roll of toilet paper.

She plunked it in and covered it with icing.

The finished product looked beau-tiful, so she rushed it to the church. Before she left the house, Alice had given her daughter some money and specific instructions to be at the bake sale the minute it opened, and to buy

that cake and bring it home.

When the daughter arrived at the sale, the attractive cake had already been sold.

Alice was beside herself.

The next day, Alice was invited to a friend’s home where two tables of bridge were to be played that after-noon.

After the game, a fancy lunch was served, and to top it off, the cake in question was presented for dessert.

Alice saw the cake, she started to get out of her chair to rush into the kitchen to tell her hostess all about it, but before she could get to her feet, one of the other ladies said, “What a beautiful cake!”

Alice sat back in her chair when she heard the hostess (who was a promi-nent church member) say,

“Thank you, I baked it myself.”
