place. And non-Facebook users between 25 to 33 were three times as likely to have started and stopped with the so-cial network, rather than having nev-er tried it. When poll respondents were asked why they quit Facebook, the most common response was they didn’t find the site useful, followed by pri-vacy concerns, and a lack of time to engage with the site. As some younger users are sign-ing off, older members appear to be picking up the slack, according to the report. While estimated growth among 18- to 34-year-old users was just four per cent from the fall of 2010 to the spring of 2013 -- based on surveys by MTM -- it was 26 per cent among us-ers 50 to 65 and 38 per cent among those over 65. The results of the MTM poll are considered accurate within 1.5 per-centage points 19 times out of 20. Another recently released report indicates the Facebook market in Canada has matured to the point that
growth is now slowing down. According to estimates by the U.S.-based research firm eMarketer, Facebook is on pace to add anoth-er 500,000 users in Canada this year, pushing the membership base here past 17 million. That would represent an overall user increase of about 2.9 per cent over last year, down from the annual increase of nearly five per cent in 2012. EMarketer expects that by the end of 2014, 92.6 per cent of Canadian so-cial media users will have a Facebook account, as will 63 per cent of Internet users, and 49.1 per cent of the overall population. But eMarketer is also projecting the number of Canadian social media users who use Facebook will decrease by 1.3 percentage points this year.

The classic rags-to-riches story got a macho spin in the Oscar-win-ning Rocky, which was written by its star, Sylvester Stallone, and be-gan filming on this day in 1976. Stallone had his own rags-to-riches tale: Born in the gritty Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of New York City, he was a juvenile delinquent who was kicked out of a number of schools before he turned 15. After attending high school in Phil-adelphia and studying drama at the University of Miami, Stallone moved back to New York and later to Los Angeles, with dreams of becoming an actor.
When the idea for Rocky came to him, Stallone was living in a seedy apartment in Hollywood with his wife and dog; he began writing scripts so that he would have better roles to play. According to a pro-file in the New York Times, published November 28, 1976, he wrote the entire Rocky script in a frenzied three and a half days. After a long negotiation process, Stallone sold the script to the producers Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff, on the condition that he play the lead character, the underdog boxer Rocky “The Italian Stallion” Balboa, himself. His only previous leading role was in the low-bud-get flop The Lords of Flatbush (1974), and the producers had want-ed to cast an actor with a higher profile, such as James Caan, Burt Reynolds or Ryan O’Neal.
The inspiration for Rocky was a real-life fight between the world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali and a little-known club fighter named Chuck Wepner. In March 1975, Wepner went 15 rounds against Ali in a title bout in Cleveland, Ohio; he had been such a big underdog before the fight that Sports Illustrated ran his picture on their cover with the headline “Boxing’s Strange Encoun-ter.” In the movie, Rocky Balboa is a club fighter from Philadelphia who takes on the reigning world heavyweight champion, Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), with the help of his trainer, Mickey (Bur-gess Meredith), and his love interest, Adrian (Talia Shire). Stallone trained six hours a day for five months to don Rocky’s boxing gloves, popping vitamins and hitting the gym to develop his 46-inch chest and 16-inch bi-ceps.
Directed by John Avildsen and shot in 28 days on a $1 million budget, Rocky divided critics between raves and pans, but it became the sleep-er hit of the year, making Stallone--who got 10 percent of the grosses--a rich man and a bona fide star. It was the first feature-length movie to employ the Steadicam, which was used primar-ily in the fight scenes and the scenes of Rocky running in Philadelphia during his training. Garrett Brown’s pioneering invention helped keep the moving camera steady to create a flu-id, smooth shot. At the 1977 Academy Awards, Rocky was nominated in no fewer than 10 cat-egories, including Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay, and won three Oscars: Best Direc-tor, Best Picture and Best Film Editing. It also spawned five sequels, including Rocky II-V over the course of the 1980s and Rocky Balboa (2006).

3 SASK. PLAYERS ON MEN’S HOCKEY TEAM FOR SOCHIcbc.ca - Three Saskatchewan players will be part of the men’s Olympic hockey team. Ryan Getzlaf, Chris Kunitz and Patrick Marleau will travel to Sochi, Russia, next month to defend Cana-da’s 2010 Olympic gold medal. Marleau is from Aneroid, Sask., while Getzlaf and Kunitz are from Regina. The head coach of the team is Sas-katoon’s Mike Babcock. While Saskatchewan placed three players on the squad, the neighbour-ing provinces of Alberta and Manito-ba had one apiece. Saskatchewan placed more players per capita on Team Canada than any other province. Canada’s first game is on Feb.13, against Norway.

WHAT IS A POLAR VORTEX?cbc.ca - The polar vortex refers to winds that whip around the polar ice cap, trapping Earth’s coldest tempera-tures there. Its deterioration with global warm-ing, however, can send arctic weath-er south into areas as far away as the southern U.S. and Europe, according to National Oceanic and Atmospher-ic Administration scientists. “When the polar vortex … breaks down, this allows cold air to spill south, affecting the eastern Unit-ed States and other regions,” says NOAA’s Dr. James Overland. “This can result in a warm-er-than-average arctic region and colder temperatures that may include severe winter weather events on the North American and European con-tinents.”

ENERGY HIGH AND MOOD LIFTED By Nicole Nichols, Fitness Instructor
& Health Educator Winter is in full force. As the days get shorter and the nights get colder, even the best of us can get a little down. The “winter blues” are characterized by the mild depression, lack of motivation, and low energy that many people experience during this cold season. Luckily, there’s a lot you can do to both prevent the blues from coming on and get yourself back to normal if they’re already here.
1. EXERCISEAs if we needed another reason to get fit! Ex-ercise isn’t only for maintaining your weight and staying healthy. It’s great for relieving the stresses of life. Plus, the effects of a good work-out can last for several hours after you hit the showers. You’ll have more energy throughout the day, and your metabolism with stay ele-vated too. Exercise also helps your mind by releasing those “feel good chemicals” that im-prove your mood.
2. EAT A HEALTHY DIETWhat and when you eat has a great affect on your mood and energy. Avoid refined and processed foods (like white breads, rice, and sugar). These foods are not only devoid of the nutrients your body craves, but they zap your energy levels and can affect your mood—causing depression, lack of concentration, and mood swings. Try to incorporate more complex carbohydrates (whole wheat breads, brown rice, veggies, fruit) and get your daily 8 cups of water. These healthy foods provide your body (and mind) with nutrients, and stabilize your blood sugar and your energy levels.
3. GET SOME SUNMost people know that sunlight provides us with Vitamin D. But did you know that it also improves your mood? Winter days are shorter and darker than other months, and because of the cold weather, a lot of people spend less and less time outdoors. Lack of sunlight can cause many people to become depressed—without knowing why! Similar to exercise, sunlight exposure releases neurotransmitters in the brain that affect mood. Try to spend a little more time outdoors. Keep your shades up during the day to let more light in. Sit near windows in restaurants and during class. Try
changing the light bulbs in your house to “full spectrum” bulbs. These mimic natural light and actually have the same affects on your mind as the real thing.
4. ACT ON YOUR RESOLUTIONSA recent study from the CDC showed a strong link between healthy behaviors and depres-sion. Women who exhibited healthy behav-iors (like exercising, not smoking, etc.) had less sad and depressed days than those whose behaviors were less than healthy. Although re-searchers studied women, the results are like-ly similar in men. 5. AVOID BINGE DRINKINGStaying in with a cold beer or a nice glass of wine may seem like the only thing to do in the winter months, and many people who feel down also tend to turn to alcohol when they’re feeling down. But alcohol is actually a depressant, and rather than improving your mood, it only makes it worse. Avoiding alco-hol when you are already depressed is a good idea. Moderate drinking is fine for most people, but binge drinking (defined as having 5 or more drinks in one sitting) is never a healthy choice. The morning after will have you feeling sick, depressed, and even more tired, which will affect many aspects of your life. This will make your low energy and bad mood even worse.
6. TREAT YOURSELFHaving something to look forward to can keep anyone motivated. Winter seems end-less! But if you plan something exciting, your mood improves when you’re anticipating it and when the event actually comes. Plan something that’s exciting to you—a weekend trip, a day at the spa, a party (but keep #5 above in mind), or special event like a play, girls (or guys) night out, or sporting event.
7. RELAX!You’re busy! Work, class, family, friends, appointments, meetings—even if you enjoy being busy, everyone needs some time off. Don’t be afraid to say “No” to extra oppor-tunities (covering a shift for a co-worker, bringing food to your son’s class party). Try to spend a few minutes each day doing nothing! Read a book or magazine, sleep in on the weekend, go to bed early, try some meditations, or take a yoga class. Relaxation, especially in the form of yoga, can alleviate stress and leave you with a calm energy. Mental exercises like meditation and positive thinking can help keep depression at bay.
8. EMBRACE THE SEASONInstead of always avoiding the cold and the snow—look for the best that it has to offer! Take up a winter sport like ice skating, snow-boarding, hockey, or even sledding! Enjoy these opportunities while they last—after all, they’re only here a few months per year. Staying active will boost your energy. Seeing winter in a positive light, with all the fun activities that it has to offer, will keep your spirits high.
9. GET SOCIAL SUPPORTDon’t underestimate the power of friends, family, mentors, co-workers, and neighbors. Who can you turn to when you’re down and need a pick-me-up? Keep a mental list of these special people and don’t be afraid to ask for help or encouragement when you need it. Something as simple as a phone call, a chat over coffee, or a nice email or letter can brighten your mood.
10. CATCH SOME ZZZZ’SPeople naturally want to sleep a little bit more during the winter. But with all we have going on, sometimes sleep is the first thing to go. With a little time management, and some self-discipline, you can meet your shut-eye needs. Aim for 7-8 hours each night, and try to keep your bedtime and waking time con-sistent. That way, your sleeping patterns can normalize and you’ll have more energy. Try not to oversleep—those 12-hour snoozes on the weekend can actually make you MORE tired. Don’t forget naps! A short (10-30 minute) afternoon nap may be all you need to re-energize midday.

Little Jimmy’s mother was serving prunes for dessert, but little Jimmy didn’t like prunes one little bit! He
grumbled and complained and abso-lutely refused to eat them. Mother was
very cross and told Jimmy that God would be very angry if he didn’t eat
his prunes. Still he wouldn’t eat them, so in desperation, mother sent him to his room. Later in the evening a fierce
thunderstorm blew up. There was much thunder and lightning. Feeling some-
what sorry for little Jimmy and thinking that he might be afraid of the storm,
mother went up to his room. When she opened the door, Jimmy was kneeling
looking out the window. Mother heard him say, “Gee whiz, God, all this just
for two measly prunes?”
