n the words of the Chinese “Simplicity is elegance” and within a few seconds of arriving at Strawberry Hill the reason for the proverb should be evident. If a mountain getaway with the ultimate environment for relaxation is on the agenda, then look no further than the Strawberry Hill Hotel located in the cool hills of St. Andrew. The once privately owned residence of Island Records’ founder Chris Blackwell has been a popular vacation spot ever since
he opened its doors to the public.
Strawberry Hill boasts twelve Georgian style cottages, each with its own unique interior, restaurant and dining room that replicates the feeling of Sunday dinner at your grandparents. Terraces, spa, conference room, cozy bar, library and a one of a kind lush black swimming pool with the edges made of wood make the experience complete.
General Manager, Nicholas Lynch explains “Everything is set up to take full advantage of the view; we want our guests to see and enjoy what nature at its best has to offer”. “Also what separates Strawberry Hill from our competitors is the fact that we try to use as much as possible from the local community as we can”, said Mr. Lynch, “we grow lettuce, herbs, tangerine, mangoes, strawberries, coffee among others.” He also mentioned the market garden that had just completed its first phase and a three hour nature trail is in its final stage and will be made available to all guests in the very near future.

Mountain View, as the name suggests, gives a breathtaking view of the sur-rounding mountains. Ideal for a pair of couples as the rooms are not close together and give each couple a distinct sense of privacy. Complete with four post beds, private verandah, comfy living room with a wide selection of magazines and music from all genres including Black Uhuru and Baaba Maal.
Bamboo features two bedrooms with balconies on both levels. Kitchenettes are filled with snacks and the living room with a bird’s eye view of Irish Town is to die for. Bathrooms are simply furnished but elegant. These cottages are less corporate and more individually styled for comfort. “We try not to make it too much of a hotel, that explains our homey furnishing as if you were at your friend house staying in their guestroom”

I t is my spouses’ birthday in a couple of weeks and after much thought I decided on what I thought would be the perfect gift.
Purchasing a gift certificate at a local spa, I noticed that the two ladies next in line
looked up quizzically when I responded to the cashier’s ques-tion regarding the name on the gift certificate. The cashier did not seem fazed at all after all we are ten years into the new millennium. Ladies, drop those medieval preconceptions, men need pampering too.
Most men hold on to the concept that being well groomed is equivalent to having the consistency of a marshmallow and that is so not true. Every woman likes a man who makes a concerted effort to make not feel like Scotch Brite in bed and it is a woman’s responsibility to debunk make men feel com-fortable with taking care of themselves. Can I get an amen?
Myth
It is disturbing how many people who still believe that a man who visits his manicurist regularly during working hours (ahem) is soft or even worse, swinging for the other team. This school of thought is holding us back and it is quite dis-concerting, if we women believe in “Equal opportunity in Em-ployment” then what’s wrong with “Equal Opportunity for pampering”? We Jamaicans tend to think the rougher a man is, the manlier he is. It seems that anything outside of a hair-cut is downright taboo. “Put those tweezers down and step away from the man, you facialist.” But let it echo from the hills to the valleys, there is nothing wrong with a man who takes pride in his appearance, chuh!
We caught up with Mrs.Kaye Cousins of Rejuvenation Spa who has been in the business for over 21 years and believes that while men are becoming more aware of their appear-ance and image, there is still more that they can do. “We try to make them comfortable by giving them their own space in a private room where they can get their facials as well as manicures and pedicures”
Despite the mindset the number of men visiting spas is fast increasing and thankfully the taboo is being removed, at a painstakingly slow pace however. It goes beyond the yearning for some pampering too as people in the food preparation industry are required to pay special attention to their hands in particular. But ladies, don’t be afraid to drag that special someone along with you to a spa date, you’ll soon find that those hushed phone calls and secret meetings were all to get his spa appointment filled.
So, be wily, be cunning, never mind what it takes just get him to that spa! After all, we are the ones who know how we like our men.
