If you like the ocean and you like history, don't miss this event. Gene Peterson is an experienced wreck diver and deep sea explorer, and has logged over 4800 wreck dives off the North Atlantic from Florida to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. He has a teaching degree from Rowan University, and is a member of the prestigious National Association of Underwater Instructors. Gene has been teaching diving since 1976, and has received honors from the New Jersey Council of Dive Clubs and from the National Association of Underwater instructors for his 35 years of dedication to safe wreck diver training. Since 1981, Gene has led and experienced over 8 expeditions to the Andrea Doria including the first wreck exploration and on to the 50th Anniversary dive of her sinking. He has led over 30 expeditions to Nova Scotia and numerous wreck discovery adventures off the Delmarva coast. Over two dozen adventure books and numerous magazine articles have documented Gene's expeditions and discoveries. Gene will present a fascinating review of some of his four decades of wreck diving adventures. Having recovered thousands of shipwreck artifacts, including bells, helms, binnacles, telegraphs, china, deadeyes and portholes, he will take you on an adventure discussing some of his recoveries. He will also have some of these artifacts on display. Check the posting in this newsletter for the special food program for this Social plus some alternative driving routes to the Bellmawr VFW. South Jersey’s Own “Jacques Cousteau” By Tom Cusack WHAT’S IN THE BAG… by Tom Cusack On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in late September, there were 5 carloads of Fanfifty members roaming South Jersey on the Fanfifties First Annual Scavenger Hunt, hosted by Linda and her assistants, Barbara and Harriet. At 3 PM, everyone met in Toscano Restaurant’s parking lot on Route 70 in Cherry Hill (remarkably everyone was on time!). Each car was given a list of 50 items to find somewhere and a bag to put them in, and they had to get them back to the parking lot within 2 hours. The team with the most items would win first prize. Then we would all have dinner at Toscano’s. You won’t believe some of the 50 items on the list that the teams had to find. How about a paper placemat with the logo of a diner on it; fuzzy dice (like we hung from the car mirrors back in the day); a store bag with the store’s logo on it; a silver dollar coin (who has one of them?); an old fashioned skeleton key (What??); a job application (most are online .. now what?); and my favorite … an unused popcorn bag from a movie theatre. I was the driver in one of the cars. When I went into the Marlton 8 Theatre, the only way to get to the popcorn counter was to buy a ticket, and I wasn’t about to do that. So I told the person collecting tickets that I was not going to see a movie, and that I just wanted to get a bag from the popcorn counter. She was very nice and replied: “Oh .. you must be on the Scavenger Hunt … no problem .. just go to the counter.” That’s when I knew my car was not the only team of Fanfifties that visited this theatre.
