Psalm 65:1-14 (Led by reader; read responsively by whole verse.)

1 You are to be praised, O God, in Zion; *to you shall vows be performed in Jerusalem.

2 To you that hear prayer shall all flesh come, *because of their transgressions.

3 Our sins are stronger than we are, *but you will blot them out.

4 Happy are they whom you choose and draw to your courts to dwell there! *they will be satisfied by the beauty of your house, by the holiness of your temple.

5 Awesome things will you show us in your righteousness,O God of our salvation, *

O Hope of all the ends of the earth and of the seas that are far away.6 You make fast the mountains by your power; *

they are girded about with might.7 You still the roaring of the seas, *

the roaring of their waves, and the clamor of the peoples.8 Those who dwell at the ends of the earth will trembleat your marvelous signs; *

you make the dawn and the dusk to sing for joy.9 You visit the earth and water it abundantly;you make it very plenteous; *

the river of God is full of water.10 You prepare the grain, *

for so you provide for the earth.11 You drench the furrows and smooth out the ridges; *

with heavy rain you soften the ground and bless its increase.12 You crown the year with your goodness, *

and your paths overflow with plenty.13 May the fields of the wilderness be rich for grazing, *

and the hills be clothed with joy.14 May the meadows cover themselves with flocks, and the valleys cloak themselves with grain; *

let them shout for joy and sing.

THE LESSONSAll may be seated.

Isaiah 55:10-13

As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth,

making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,

so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;it shall not return to me empty,

but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

For you shall go out in joy,and be led back in peace;

the mountains and the hills before youshall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress;instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle;

and it shall be to the Lord for a memorial, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.

Romans 8:1-11

There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the lawof the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and ofdeath. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do:by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and to deal with sin, hecondemned sin in the flesh, so that the just requirement of the law might befulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of theflesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the thingsof the Spirit. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on theSpirit is life and peace. For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh ishostile to God; it does not submit to God's law-- indeed it cannot, and thosewho are in the flesh cannot please God.

But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of Goddwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belongto him. But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, theSpirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesusfrom the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give lifeto your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you.

The Reading from the Holy Gospel (Standing) Matthew 13:1-9,18-23

Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. Such great crowdsgathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the wholecrowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying:“Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell on thepath, and the birds came and ate them up. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since theyhad no depth of soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and sincethey had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and thethorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and broughtforth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let anyone withears listen!”

“Hear then the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of thekingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches awaywhat is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path. As for what wassown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediatelyreceives it with joy; yet such a person has no root, but endures only for awhile, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, thatperson immediately falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this isthe one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealthchoke the word, and it yields nothing. But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruitand yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”

The Apostles’ Creed (Standing, read in unison) BCP 96

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Gospel Acclamation #209 ELW Blessed be God the Source of All Life(Sung twice before and once after the Gospel)

The congregation is seated.

The Gospel Reading Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23

That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. Suchlarge crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, whileall the people stood on the shore. Then he told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rockyplaces, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soilwas shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and theywithered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grewup and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produceda crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear.”

“Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: When anyone hearsthe message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil onecomes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sownalong the path. The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hearsthe word and at once receives it with joy. But since they have no root, theylast only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of theword, they quickly fall away. The seed falling among the thorns refers tosomeone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulnessof wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful.

But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the wordand understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

Lay Leader: This was the oath you swore to our father Abraham, to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

The First Reading

The explanation refers to the seed and soil, not to the Sower. But if wethink about the Sower for a second, we hear a story about extravagantgenerosity. Extravagant even to the point of being wasteful. Or perhaps, extravagant even to the point of giving seed to all regardless of pre-conditions. You and I might not waste our efforts on the down trodden, thethorny, and the hardened, but God does.

The Good News is given even in the midst of various troubles and woes, faults and failings.

The calling of the community of faith is to have two good ears, and to beconstantly open to having our worn down places ploughed up, turned over, loosened up; to having our rocky places named and removed, and ourshallowness deepened and enriched; to having our thickets of cares andanxieties plucked out and space cleared for new growth. Who knows, maybeinstead of eking out the bare minimum to stay alive, we might be showeredwith God's extravagant wastefulness. Rev Dr. George Hermanson, "A Matter of Perspective "

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church.People: Thanks be to God.

Canticle 20: Glory to God Gloria in excelsis BCP 94-5

Lay Leader: Let us offer the Canticle in unison. All: Glory to God in the highest,

and peace to his people on earth.Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,Lord God, Lamb of God,you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us;you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One,you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen

The Second Reading

A friend of mine once was a rural pastor for a little while, and he haddesigns on entering a county fair and impressing his people. So he carried ahandful of seed out of the parsonage, prepared some rows out back, planted, watered, tended and waited. And nothing happened in the field at all.

But something did happen back along the walkway. Apparently, he’ddropped one or more of the seeds while he was walking, and in that very spotby his walkway sprang up the most beautiful-looking squash he’d ever seen.

In that agricultural accident, my friend was a little like God. God justflings seed everyplace. Apparently, God has seed to spare and likes to seewhat can grow where it’s not supposed to grow. Jason Byassee, "Scattering Seeds"

The Leader and people pray responsively, standing or kneeling.

With expectant faith we pray to our God, confident in God’s love and infinitewisdom. Silence

We pray for all who work through the power of Christ in the Church today(parish intercessions), serving the needs of the poor and healing the wounds ofinjustice, division, and materialism in our society. Silence

We pray for the elderly, the sick, and the lonely among us, especially (parish

intercessions) that they may receive comfort, companionship, and care fromthose around them. Silence

We pray that those who have been persecuted or seriously wronged by othersmay experience warmth and love with Christ, and be able to forgive thosewho have hurt them. Silence

We pray for all Christians: that they may seek the kingdom of God before allelse. Silence

We pray that we may be a sign of the love of God to all whom we meettoday. We pray for all those who celebrate joy in life (parish intercessions)

Silence

We pray for the souls of all those whom we have loved but now no longer see;those who have gone beyond the veil of this mortal life (parish intercessions).

May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.

Lay Leader: O God of mystery, we ask you to grant our prayers andpetitions. Help us to seek and to love you more every day ofour lives. Teach us to reach out to our neighbor, that we mayfollow the example of Jesus, the Christ, your Son our Lord.

People: Amen
