Collene Van Noord reviews The Shack by William P. YoungMackenzie Allen Phillips' youngest daughter Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation, and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his "Great Sadness," Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend....

William Paul Young is a Canadian author. The manuscript that later became The Shack, was intended only for his six kids and a handful of close friends. It rapidly took on a life of its own, and has enjoyed international renown. Join us for this facinating story. Refreshments will be served.

Geoff Gallante 16-year-old jazz trumpeter, Geoff Gallante will team up with jazz pianist Joe Holt as

they perform selections from what has come to be known as The Great American Songbook and includes spirituals and hymns which touch the heart.

Sunday, January 294:00 PM

St. Olaf College BandThe St. Olaf Band is truly one of America’s preeminent bands and is recognized by The New Yorker and other news media. The band tours internationally performing the very best compositions for symphonic band, producing an exciting and engaging program.

A Vision for Music Ministry: The Sanctuary Piano Our church leadership is excited about the expanding music ministry of our church and the role that music plays in worship services and concerts. The Session has approved the Worship and Music Committee’s goal to affirm the procurement of a concert grand piano as a worthy goal for our church. Our vision for music ministry includes the firm belief that a full-size grand piano in the sanctuary will be an enduring asset for the church’s mission as we seek to glorify God fully and offer our very best in the name of Christ.

This winter and spring, the Piano Task Force will be providing opportunities and special events to hear more about the piano and how you can help us to procure the funds necessary ($165,000 total cost). We have a Piano Fund established, and anyone can make a donation to the Piano Fund at any time. We can reach this goal if there are substantial gifts of ten, twenty, or fifty thousand dollars, as well as smaller gifts. Every gift makes a difference. Watch The Moorings Line and the Sunday bulletin for more information on how we can attain this very worthwhile goal. Please feel free to contact Thomas Goetz, Director of Music, (213-5246 or [email protected]) if you would like further information, or if you wish to make a major gift.

The Piano Task Force: Alexandra Carlson, Tom Edwards, Joan Haff, Gwen DeWitt, Jim DeWitt, Mary Poston (Chair of Worship and Music) and Thomas Goetz (Moderator)

Preschool News

Children's Ministry

How much would you pay for 10 years of clean water? Would you be surprised to know that $60 can supply one family with clean water for 10 years? Our Moorings Church families and their friends are teaming up once again to WALK for CLEAN WATER to raise awareness of how critical water filters are to the lives of children and their families in all parts of the world. Specifically, this year we are walking to support a need in a village named Moro in Haiti. Each day children and their families journey to a river miles from their village to collect water. They might even make 2 or 3 trips in one day. To make matters worse, the water is unsuitable and dangerous for drinking and preparing food.

Help us make their Walk Worth It by walking with us on January 22 after our 10:00 worship service. We will meet in Moss Hall and all walk together to Moorings Beach. Vans will be available to bring you back to the church after a time of lunch and fellowship. You can also help by making a donation to supply a water filter

for one or more families in the village of Moro. Help us change lives in the name of Jesus Christ.

Children will not want to miss Sunday school on January 15, as Bob Lichy and David Granfield will give them a special presentation. They will hear about how successful the water filters have worked in Guatemala. They will learn about the village of Moro in Haiti by watching a video of the children making their daily walks to collect water and how they go about digging to find “clean” water. Following the presentation, each child will be given a water bottle filled with clean water. This bottle will serve two purposes: (1) remind them of their easy access to abundant, clean and drinkable water (2) once empty the bottle is a piggy bank to collect money for water filters. Through education, our hope is to encourage our children to play a part in saving the lives of children in Haiti.

The winter season is turning the preschool into a winter wonderland.

The two-year-old classes will hold a Popsicle picnic and paint their own versions of snowmen with different mediums. The basic language concepts associated with “opposites” will also be the focus in the two-year-old classes. The three -year-olds will explore a geography unit as they learn about the North and South Poles and the animals that are unique to these areas. Our four-year-old classes will learn about the differences between northern and southern winters and hold an Antarctic expedition.

A reminder to all church members and friends that registration for the 2016-2017 school year will be taking place on January 24 and 25. If your child’s name is not on our registration list or you would like more information regarding registration, please contact the preschool office (649-1811) at your earliest convenience.

Mission Outreach

Thank You Moorings Presbyterian!

Your quick response and generosity made the Haitian School House Relocation possible!

The location of the schoolhouse did not allow for the full tour path to wrap around it, inhibited drainage into an adjacent pond, and tended to over-shade the vegetable production plots in the Community Garden. Shifting the entire schoolhouse to an adjacent open field allowed ECHO to better accommodate tour golf carts (which are needed for tour participants who are not able to walk the length of the farm), provide adequate drainage, orient the schoolhouse in a more aesthetically pleasing direction, and offer more direct sunlight to the Community Garden area.

Because Moorings Presbyterian quickly responded to this need a Christian Farmers work team visiting in October was able to provide the labor to complete this project.
