Welcome to the Options Recovery College in NorthLincolnshire

What we do

We offer a range of recovery focused educational courses for people aged 18 and over, which are aimed at supporting them to make the most of their talents and skills through self-management, enabling them to deal with their mental health challenges and helping them achieve the things they want in life.

Our courses offer opportunities to gain an understanding of the issues that challenge our mental health, begin the journey of recovery and the hope that taking control and self-management can bring.

All our courses offer a welcoming environment with small friendly groups. They are free of charge, and available to everyone, whether you have experience of mental health challenges, are a family member, loved one or friend of someone with mental health challenges, or a member of Trust staff.

We have 11 core courses which vary in content and length and all students will receive help with:

• Enrolment and individual learning plan

• Understanding of mental health issues

• Developing life skill’s

• Physical health and wellbeing

• Getting involved

Our aim is to break down barriers between ‘us’ and ‘them’. Where possible, our courses are produced and co-delivered by people who have had experience of mental health challenge’s and those with professional experience. We are also able to sign post you to courses run by other agencies in the community.

When we receive your registration, we will contact you to arrange an appointment with a member of staff to discuss your learning requirements.

Equality and diversity

We are committed to making our services accessible to all, and our building offers disabled access and facilities. We will respect you as an individual at all times, and believe everyone should be given the opportunity to succeed.

Learning support

We offer information, advice and guidance about our courses and their content. We will prepare your individual learning plan together with you, identifying your goals, hopes and ambitions for your recovery journey. We help you choose the best courses to achieve these goals. At intervals during your study we will speak to you about your progress, offering support and guidance and identifying any problems.

Within the learning plan there is opportunity to discuss any learning support needs that you may have, from an educational or mental health perspective. We will then do everything we can to support you in the direction you wish to proceed.

General information

All of our courses are run from our main base at Sandfield House in Ashby, Scunthorpe. However, this term we are also running a series of six sessions at the Water's Edge Visitors Centre in Barton upon Humber.

We also have a campus at Great Oaks Mental Health Unit in Ashby, where we run some of our taster sessions. These are only available to people being supported by either the Mulberry Ward or the Access Team.

Enrolment andIndividualLearning Plan

1. Enrolment and Individual Learning Plan

When you enrol with the Options Recovery College you will complete your Individual Learning Plan (ILP) with a member of staff.

This plan is designed to help you identify your specific learning goals for the semester, in relation to your hopes and ambitions for your personal recovery journey.

At this point you have the opportunity to book on to courses you have expressed an interest in, and also discuss any learning needs you may have.

2. Your Options Recovery College Experience

Following your initial meeting to discuss your Individual Learning Plan you will be able to choose up to three courses per term in the Recovery College.

When you complete one of our courses, your Individual Learning Plan will be reviewed with you and you will be given the opportunity to enrol on courses in the next term of the Recovery College if you wish. We will also give you information on other courses available within the community that you may be able to access. Please see the back of this prospectus for a list of other RDaSH services and agencies we work in partnership with.

Managing Low Mood

Wednesday 14 and 21 September 1.30pm – 3.30pm

Wednesday 5 and 12 October 1.30pm – 3.30pm

Wednesday 26 October and 2 November 1.30pm – 3.30pm

Wednesday 23 and 30 November 1.30pm – 3.30pm

When you are depressed or low in mood it can affect every part of your life. It may be tough to get yourself going and things you used to take in your stride can seem difficult.

This two week course explores alternative practical steps that people have found useful inmanaging their experiences.

There will be a strong focus on personal experiences of depression and low mood, with an emphasis on introducing and reflecting on practical ideas and approaches.

You will be invited to share your personal experiences but only if you feel comfortable in doing this.

Really Useful Toolbox (R.U.T.)

Thursday 22 September 10am – 12noon

Thursday 3 November 10am – 12noon

Thursday 1 December 10am – 12noon

Sometimes we cope and manage our feelings in a way that is out of character from our normal selves. This course offers you the chance to look at a range of coping strategies for when we are feeling overwhelmed and to develop your own toolkit of coping strategies.

Assertiveness

Tuesday 11, 18 and 25 October 1.30pm – 3pm

This three week course looks at assertiveness as a way to communicate confidently and effectively. It will show you how to affirm your rights without ignoring the views of others, and help you to express your point of view without appearing threatening.

The course focuses on assertive behaviour as the best way to communicate successfully. It looks at assertive rights, assertive thinking, body language, expressing feelings, saying no and dealing with criticism.

The main objective of this course is to develop an understanding of assertiveness and equip you to be assertive in difficult situations. It may involve discussion, hand outs, group involvement and informal sharing of personal experiences if you are comfortable with this.

Anxiety Management

Tuesday 13, 20 and 27 September 10am – 12noon

Tuesday 18, 25 October and 1 November 10am – 12noon

Tuesday 15, 22 and 29 November 10am – 12noon

Is anxiety limiting my life choices? Do I want things to change for the better?

Are anxious thoughts causing me problems?

If you are asking yourself any of these questions and your answer is yes, this course could be for you.

This three week course examines the causes of stress and anxiety. It gives you practical advice, methods and techniques that have a good record of success in helping alleviate the symptoms of stress and anxiety.

It helps you look at your own situation and build up a tool kit to lessen and manage anxiety and stress in your life, giving you more control and more opportunities to do the things you want to do.

Anxiety Management ½ Day Session

Thursday 20 October 9.30am – 12.30pm

Wednesday 16 November 9.30am – 12.30pm

This three hour session is for people who have personal experience of anxiety and stress, or if you provide support for somebody who does. This session will provide you with an overview of stress and anxiety and a guide to the techniques that can be used to manage associated symptoms. It will be informal and interactive.

Assertiveness ½ Day Session

Thursday 10 November 9.30am – 1.30pm

This session will explore techniques of assertiveness that express and promote your feelings, wishes, wants and desires. Assertiveness can help you to express yourself in a clear, open and reasonable way, without undermining the rights of yourself or others. It enables you to act in your own best interest, stand up for yourself without undue anxiety and increasing your confidence and self-esteem. The session will include hand-outs and group discussions.

Managing Low Mood ½ Day Session

Thursday 27 October 9.30am – 1.30pm

Tuesday 13 December 9.30am – 1.30pm

If you have personal experience of low mood or depression, or you provide support for someone who does, then this three hour session is for you. It will allow you to share your experiences and challenges. You will begin to explore ways of coping with and managing your low mood through learning new skills and coping strategies.

Self-Esteem and Confidence Building

Thursday 15 September 10am – 12noon

This two hour session gives you an opportunity to learn about what self-esteem is, and how it is developed. It also offers practical ideas on what you can do to boost your self-esteem and build your confidence.

A Good Night’s Sleep: Ways of managing sleep problems

Monday 12 September 10am – 12noon

Having difficulty getting off to sleep at night? Waking up early in the morning?Spending the night tossing and turning?

This two hour session will help you understand sleep and ways of dealing with sleep problems by examining:

• What is a normal night’s sleep • What causes sleep difficulties• How changing habits and lifestyle can help • Natural remedies

Mindfulness

Friday 23 September 10am – 12noon

Do you spend the majority of your time worrying about the future? Do you often dwell on past events?

During this session we will focus on mindfulness and being able to combat these worries by being aware of the present moment, and learning to accept these moments without judgement. Mindfulness is helpful for anyone who wants to improve their physical and mental wellbeing.

Smoke Free Life - Drop in Session

Monday 26 September 2pm – 4pm

Would you like help stopping smoking?

You are four times more likely to stop smoking and to remain smoke free with our support.

These sessions are run by a qualified and experienced Stop Smoking Practitioner.

Motivation and Making Positive Changes

Everybody gets stuck sometimes and finds it difficult to make positive changes. This course will give practical tips to overcome difficulties and move forward.

Journaling to Recovery

This session will explore how journaling can support your recovery journey, and how it can contribute to wellbeing.

We aim to give you an understanding of the various techniques, and how to use journaling as an effective tool to positive mental wellbeing.

Meeting People and Doing Things

Dates and times to be confirmed

This session focuses on the benefits of having structure to your day, and discusses why doing activities improves your wellbeing.

We focus on some techniques and strategies for increasing the amount of things we do, and what obstacles we might face in doing them.

During the session we will also have the opportunity to talk about local activities you could get involved in within the local community. We’ll tell you what is available and give you information on how to get involved.

Mindfulness

We are fortunate to be able to offer 6 taster sessions of our main core courses in the beautiful surroundings of the Riverview room, Water’s Edge Visitors Centre in Barton upon Humber. Not only will you be able to enjoy a free course but also access the other facilities available at the centre.

Mental health support available onlineWe commissioned seven films to make our most regularly run seminars on mood and anxiety more easily available via the internet.

Mood Management deals with challenging negative thoughts and practical steps that people can use to manage low mood more effectively.

Anxiety Management helps people understand how anxiety and panic affects them and their life, by showing them how to develop coping strategies and breathing exercises when it becomes problematic.

Other RDaSH services

Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT)

The RDaSH IAPT Team helps people suffering with common mental health problems, such as depression or anxiety, providing advice and consultation and therapy to people aged 18 and over.

• Stress Control

We offer a free six week stress control course in two hour sessions, to help you learn how to manage stress more effectively. It is available to anyone over the age of 18, living in North Lincolnshire who is experiencing the symptoms of stress, and helps them learn new skills to manage these symptoms more effectively.

We try to hold the course in local venues such as libraries or community centres, so it’s easy for people to get to, and we often run the courses in the evening to fit around work and family commitments.

Stress control is an educational course delivered to an audience and comes with free written information about stress and ways of looking after yourself. You will not be expected to share any personal information or experiences with any other person on the course, or answer any questions. All you need to do is listen.

Crosby Employment part of ONGO CommunitiesCrosby Employment is now part of the local social housing group ONGO.

Crosby remains an employment bureau in the traditional sense, but also provides many other services, free of charge to local residents. The office is located on Laneham Street in Scunthorpe Town Centre. Services are delivered by the following teams:

Employment Support Team

This team specialises in offering bespoke training, support, help and guidance for anyone who is looking to enhance their skills, improve their self-esteem and confidence, volunteer or go into paid employment. We have various programmes and work placements available, in addition to one-to-one support from coaches who offer tailored help. The team has experience of working with ex-offenders, lone parents, substance mis-users and those with disabilities and limiting health conditions – to enable everyone to fulfil their potential.

Free training courses offered:

• First Aid At Work • Safeguarding• Equality & Diversity • Healthy Eating• Food Safety Level 2 • Introduction as a cleaner• Manual Handling • Risk Assessment• COSHH • Fire Safety.

Partner agency services

Scunthorpe and District MindScunthorpe and District Mind is an independent local charity affiliated to the national mental health charity Mind, offering a range of courses to promote positive mental health and provide an opportunity for people to improve their wellbeing.

Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP)

Every Wednesday afternoon 2pm - 3pm

WRAP is a way to manage your own health and can be used for both physical and mental health issues. WRAP gives you the chance to develop your own personal plan to manage and improve your health by increasing your awareness by developing new ways to feel better. The one hour session includes a discussion about the WRAP plan and gives people the chance to try new ‘well-ness tools’. These taster sessions vary from week to week and include a variety of topics such as relaxation and healthy eating as well as fun activities. This is a rolling programme so you can attend as often as you wish without committing to regular weekly sessions.

Coping with Life Courses

We offer a range of seven ‘Coping with Life’ courses. These include:

• Coping with Stress • Managing Anxiety • Managing Depression • Assertiveness Skills

• Building Self Esteem • Coping with Loss and Change.

• Managing your Anger

Mental Health First Aid

This course is much more than a mental health awareness course. Delivered over 2 days it provides those attending with the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge needed to provide help to someone experiencing a mental health problem. Partner agency services

Voluntary Action North LincolnshireVoluntary Action North Lincolnshire (VANL) is a Council for Voluntary Service (CVS), which sup-ports, promotes and develops the voluntary and commercial sectors.

VANL plays a crucial role in the North Lincolnshire community. It supports voluntary organisations with their needs, so they can better serve the people they are there to support. We also help people who are experiencing a range of difficulties to realise their ambitions through volunteering, training and in-recovery planning.

We offer:

Learning for Change

The Learning for Change (L4Change) programme has emerged from close identification of learning and support needs within our local community.

The programme will specifically offer an individualised learning approach for people who may face barriers to community engagement, employment and volunteering.

What is WRAP and how can it help me?

WRAP is a structured system for monitoring uncomfortable and distressing symptoms of Mental Health problems. It helps us to plan what we can do to keep ourselves well. It also helps us identify problems that may happen in the future and plan for them.

WRAP can be used by anyone who wants to make positive changes to their lives.

Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP): How to prepare your own WRAP booklet

This is a comprehensive course consisting of six weekly two hour sessions held on the same day each week.

It will guide you through the principles of WRAP and then help you to write your own personal WRAP booklet.

It will usually be run with between four and six attendees, and many friendships have developed from within previous groups.

About the Workers’ Education Association (WEA)Founded in 1903, the WEA is the UK’s largest charitable provider of adult education, delivering 9,500 part time courses for over 78,000 people each year in England and Scotland. Through education the WEA brings teaching and people together to inspire communities and help adults make better lives for themselves and their families.
