Alberta Health Services - EMSBicycle Helmet SafetyHead injuries are a leading cause of serious injury and death to children on bicycles*. Most injuries occur when a cyclist su ers a fall, strikes a stationary object, or collides with another cyclist, or pedestrian. Remember – it’s the law in Alberta that cyclists under the age of 18 must wear a helmet (and highly recommended for all ages). Helmets should be CSA approved and worn dur-ing recreational activities such as skateboarding, in-line skating, or cycling.

Getting informed• Wearing a helmet while cycling can prevent a serious

injury or save a life• Brain injuries can cause permanent disability or death • Reduce your risk by always wearing your helmet• Replace any helmet that has been involved in a crash,

even if it appears undamaged

Getting started• Allow children to assist when buying their helmet. Cy-

clists who choose their own helmet are more likely to wear them

• Start the habit early. Young children learning to ride tricycles need to wear helmets

• Parents must lead by example: always wear your own helmet when cycling

Getting the right t• Take the time to properly t and adjust your helmet to

ensure maximum protection in case of a crash• When worn properly, helmets should t level, not tilt-

ed up, or down over the forehead• Helmets should feel snug, but not too tight. To test the

t, the helmet should not fall o when you shake your head from side-to-side while the straps are unfastened

• Adjust the chin straps to form a “Y” below and slightly forward from the ears

• Only one nger should be able to t under the chin strap when it is fastened

• Do not forget to use the sizing pads included with the helmet. They will help improve the overall t and comfort

Most Effective “Low Impact” Cardio ExercisesBy Dr. Alma Nenshi, B.Sc., D.C.

Imagine reaching your “golden years” with a bu beach body only to be told that you can’t jog or run anymore because your knee cartilage has been worn thin or you have damaged vertebrae. The last thing you want to do is hurt your body while trying to stay in shape. Low im-pact cardio exercises can help you maintain a healthy cardiovascular system without causing damage to your musculoskeletal system.

Walking—Walking places far less stress on the knees than jogging, running or pounding the stairs. Keep things interesting and explore di erent streets or roads or hiking on trails with a friend. Involving your upper body as you walk can get your heart beating more vig-orously so swing or rotate your arms to the sides while walking.

Speed Walking—It’s impossible to do speed walking without involving the upper body. The most e cient position is to keep your elbows bent at a 90-degree an-gle and be sure they remain close to your body. Be sure to stick to at, smooth surfaces to reduce the chances of injury.

Cycling—For even less impact, take your bicycle out for a spin. If your bicycle is properly adjusted to your size, there should be no strain on your knees. You can cover far more territory, do more sightseeing and get lots of cardiovascular bene t. Just watch your pos-ture on your bike. Forward head carriage can place undue stress on the neck and upper back, areas elec-trically signaling the heart, lungs, thyroid and diges-tive organs just to name a few.

Stairs—Walking up stairs is a powerful way to work your body. Make certain you softly plant each foot in turn on the next step and use the strength in your legs to push you upward. You don’t want the walking to become jogging which is high impact.

Swimming—If you’re just starting an exercise pro-gram or returning after years of relative inactivity, swimming is an excellent low-impact exercise op-tion. Taking to the pool can build up vast reservoirs of cardiovascular health because swimming can po-tentially work the entire body.

Dancing—Take a dance class. Whether you’re into ballroom, tap, ballet or modern dance, you can get a low impact workout while having fun with others.

If you already su er from thin cartilage, don’t let that stop you from exercising. One study did MRIs on 50–80 year olds, all healthy men. The results showed that more exercise led to thicker knee cartilage. The con-sensus was that exercise helped to repair cartilage de ciencies. Everything else being equal, the body is amazing in its ability to repair itself. And these low impact exercises can work wonders for your long-term cardiovascular health.

OME GARDENING WITH BARBARA

VALLARTA BOTANICAL GARDENSby Barbara Shorrock

A 40 minute bus ride south of downtown Puerto Val-larta brought us to the Vallarta Botanical Gardens, where we spent a most enjoyable day in this won-derful place. Located on the Paci c coast of Mexico in the tropical dry forest ecosystem, it features the local ora and fauna of the area plus some exotic plants from around the world. The gardens cover 20 acres of land, much of which had been farmed and ranched before it was bought and donated by a generous philanthropist in 2004. It has been open to the public only since 2005, and the work done to re-store the forest and bring back local species in those 10 years is phenomenal, considering that funding comes exclusively from donors, members, and visi-tors like us. Our rst steps took us along the Vanilla Trail, down many steps into a shady jungle ravine where vanilla vines cling to trees, and many other shade loving ornamentals and culinary plants thrive, across a swinging bridge, and back up into the sun-shine. Thank goodness for the sturdy handrails!

The range and breadth of species and colours are ex-tensive, with the majority being indigenous to this part of Mexico. The bougainvillea of course are particu-larly beautiful, with the ones planted around the main building being a tall variety that blooms three colours at once – fuchsia, pink and white. This climber is a favourite of gardeners both local and visiting, as evi-denced by the plantings done in the city by the PV Gar-den Club. They have made it their mission to beautify their city by planting in boxes along the main streets a combination of trees and bougainvillea to climb and bloom for the delight of everyone. But I digress.

The main trail is bordered by many theme gardens such as succulents, cactus, tropical fruit including pineapple and all citrus varieties, and even a rose gar-

den. As January is in the dry season, the roses were looking a little parched, with only one being in bloom. Myself, I wasn’t expecting roses anyway, and kept on walking. Orchid propagation and conservation is a major focus of this organization, and we spent con-siderable time in the orchid and vanilla conserva-tory, which also contained bromeliads (air-plants or epiphytes) which live in the upper branches of the tropical forest, as do orchids. They have them down in pots on benches so we can see them up close, but there were several growing happily way way up in the trees in their natural environment. Another trail led to the construction site of the new Orchid Conserva-tory, which will surely be spectacular when complete. This is a very large property, and we didn’t attempt to cover the whole thing in half a day (for those of us who live in the frozen north, it gets really hot here in the afternoon), pausing at the Hacienda de Oro Visitor Centre for a tasty traditional Mexican meal. There was no temptation to rush as a bird feeder conveniently hanging o the building’s eaves near us attracted at least half a dozen di erent varieties of humming birds who provided entertainment during our lunch. You need a high shutter speed on your camera to catch those little guys in focus. We could see the River Walk Trail from our table as it wound down the valley to the Rio Horcones which borders the far end of the prop-erty. Visitors are welcome to swim in the river as a re-ward for trekking that trail. But what goes down must also come back up, so we passed on that one. The map rates the trails as “easy”, “medium” and “di cult”, sort of like our ski runs, and “easy” won’t get you to the river.

This is a garden that merits more than one visit, and I will go again when I next visit Puerto Vallarta. If you haven’t already seen it, put it on your list. Read more on www.vbgardens.org .

The egg is a universal symbol of Easter celebrations throughout the world and has been dyed, painted, adorned and embellished in celebration of its special symbolism.

The most famous decorated Easter eggs were those made by the well-known goldsmith, Peter Carl Faberge, who was commis-sioned in 1883 by the Russian Czar, Alexander, to make a special Easter gift for his wife, the Empress Marie.
