Maths Analysing and displaying data
(Statistics)
Statistics is one of our students’ favourite units, especially as we cross the curriculum and show how an understanding of this area of Maths will permeate every subject they study and every area of life.We end this unit with some work in the computer room where they combine their computer skills with what they have learnt in Maths.Decimal and measures
Students will utilise their prior knowledge of number and apply it to other areas of Maths including area and perimeter. Here they start to develop an appreciation for the highly connected nature of mathematical concepts.

Dear Parents/Carers,
I would like to commend year 7 on how well they have settled into life here at Cornelius Vermuyden School. Its been great to hear the positive feedback from my colleagues telling me how hard they are working in their lessons. As we go forward this half term, I would like to encourage all Year 7 to get involved in the wider life of the school, whether that be House Competitions, Form competitions or the afterschool clubs scheduled.
Thank you for all your support so far and as always, if there is anything that Mr Chittock or I can assist you with, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Kind regards Mr. O’Shaughnessy - Assistant Headteacher
Dear Parents/Carers,
Good students aren’t born good learners. Yes, individual flair plays a big part in a child’s willingness to learn and their overall disposition when it comes to schooling and education, but most children who are good learners had to develop important skills and habits. Any student who receives the right motivation can become a good learner. At Cornelius Vermuyden School, we are committed to providing this ‘right motivation’ so each and every child grows into a lifelong learner. As educators, it would be short-sighted to limit a child’s learning to just the classroom. The last year has emphasised, more than ever, the importance of children attending school. Yet, we have learnt that valuable learning can and does happen at home. The classroom provides the environment for the primary source of instruction; however, social, academic and intellectual growth should extend beyond these walls. Therefore, we are providing this booklet for half term 2 to give parents/carers a clear insight into what students will be studying in each subject (along with resources to help you support them) leading up to Christmas. Armed with this foresight, parents/carers can support their children and mirror the school’s high expectations at home.
I hope you find this booklet useful.

Parents can support their children by...
• Supporting our uniform expectations and making sure that your child comes to school properly dressed and fully equipped for the day ahead.• Ensuring that your child attends regularly and keeping us informed if for any reasons, he/she is absent.• Avoiding taking family holidays during term time.• Talking to them about their work.• Taking an interest in their activities.• Encouraging a healthy lifestyle (balanced diet, plenty of water and regular exercise)• Providing your child with a quiet place in which to study and a table or desk at which to work• Ensuring that your child develops a routine when it comes to homework. The timing does not matter; the regular routine does. It makes sense for students not to go out until homework has been completed.• Encouraging your child to go on school visits or to get involved in out-of-hours learning (eg. music, sport, art, clubs and societies, revision programmes)• Signing the student planner at the end of each week• Most importantly, giving praise and positive encouragement
You should encourage...
• Young people to complete around 1-2 hours homework a night.• Your child to talk to you about their work. Ask them to explain their work to you. Research suggests that this is the most significant form of positive enforcement. It is the best revision exercise.
Good literacy skills are a key factor in raising standards across all subjects.
Language is the main medium we use for teaching, learning and developing thinking, so it is at the heart of teaching and learning. Developing skills in literacy is about learning to use language to express, explore and communicate our thoughts, ideas and feelings with others. We do this through speaking, listening, reading and writing and getting better at literacy means making progress in each of these areas.
At Cornelius Vermuyden School, we adopt a cross-curricular focus to promoting good literacy amongst our students and staff. We believe that promoting literacy is a whole school responsibility and not just that of the English department.

At Cornelius Vermuyden School, to optimise parental involvement in the learning process, we use Go 4 Schools. Go 4 Schools helps to promote parental engagement with online access to “live” academic data and progress reports.
With parental access to GO 4 Schools, parents can access real-time assessment information and attendance as well as their child’s timetable and progress reports. They have everything they need in one place and crucially, what they see is the latest information available within the school, updated a minimum of every six weeks.
In order to access this website, you need to have an up to date email address registered on our school system and a password.

Show My Homework will allow you to see the details of the tasks your child has been set, as well as their submission status and grades.
You will be provided with login details to your personal account, ready-linked to your child’s homework calendar.
Simply visit www.showmyhomework.com to view our school’s live homework calendar and log in.
