Goals of Newport News

Gifted and Talented students should be able to receive an education that maximizes their potential based on individual needs and goals

Gifted education should be a continual process

Teachers should be adequately trained and kept up-to-date with the changing curriculum

Screening, Identification, and Placement Procedures

Teacher, Parent, and Administrative Referrals

Standardized test scores K-2 must refer at least top 5 in class K-2 students who receive free/reduced

lunch, minorities, single parent households, and specific zip codes

All 2nd graders tested - above 88th percentile are placed into pool
