Fall is here, hear the yell
Back to school, ring the bell
Brand new shoes, walking blues
Climb the fence, books and pens
I can tell that we are going to be friends
(Jack Johnson, “We’re Going to Be Friends”)
This song comes from a movie from Grace’s earliest childhood – Curious George (2006). Whenever I hear this song, especially at this point in the year, I admit to feeling a bit nostalgic…heading back to school, anticipating cooler, less humid temperatures, and football! I am also looking forward to delving deeper into prayer during this next month as we launch our next sermon se-ries (September 2nd) and multiple opportunities to explore and be challenged to live “Inside Out!” We begin by looking at how we as individuals can continue to grow in our own prayer journey and then move out as we pray for and with our families, our church, our community and then our world, as we end celebrating World Commun-ion Sunday. Also during this series, West Lawn UMC will offer a variety of opportunities to grow in our prayer life and also our spiritual life. Join Pastor Jeff and I on Wednesday evenings (beginning, September 5th) at 7:00 p.m. in the He-Brews Café studying the prayers of Paul, utilizing D.A. Carson’s book, “Praying with Paul: A Call to Spiritual Reformation.” He opens his work, with the following lines: I doubt if there is any Christian who has not sometimes found it difficult to pray. In itself this is neither surprising nor depressing: it is not surprising because we are still pilgrims with many lessons to learn; it is not depressing be-cause struggling with such matters is a part of the way we learn. We look forward to leaning in deeply and being challenged to grow as we study the framework of prayer, praying for others, excuses for not praying, overcoming the hurdles and praying for power and ministry to our sovereign and yet profoundly personal God. There will also be an opportunity to come away with God and linger on each one of our sermon series themes during a fall prayer vigil, held Saturday, September 15th. Please look for additional details in the pages of this newsletter. And know that we, as your pastors, continue to give thanks for each of you and pray with Paul, as we keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. We pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. Amen! (Ephesians 1:17-19a) Blessings on your continued journey to know God better,
~Pastor Andrea

For Samarah Joacchim, a 7th-grader in Haiti, school means life and hope for a future. But not just because of the education she will get there. For Samarah and millions of children around the world, attending school also means she will eat that day. “Without food I would be starving and my grades would be lower. Most of us rely on the food served at school to survive; this is the only meal we get for the day. I hope the feeding program will continue.”
More than 40 percent of Rise Against Hunger’s meals are distributed to school feeding programs around the world. Those meals encourage school attendance and help put these children and their families on a path out of poverty.
On Sunday, September 9, beginning at 6:00 PM in the Community Center, West Lawn will package 15,120 meals with Rise Against Hunger, but we need your help. Please consider contributing funds to make this event possible; and, please consider serving to package the actual meals at our event. With your help, we can help make sure children get the nutritious meals they need to grow and succeed.
Contact the Church Office or Welcome Center to contribute to our meal packaging event. No gift or time of service is too small - every donation makes a difference in the lives of chil-dren and families around the world.
United Methodists across the denomination will be responsible for packing more than 100 million Rise Against Hunger meals this year—that’s nearly a quarter of the more than 400 million dehydrated nutritious meals that have been distrib-uted by Rise Against Hunger to partners in 74 countries. The internationally packaged meals, in a total of 36 countries, use food that is locally sourced, the organization says. In 2017, the organization served 1.4 million people and, in addi-tion to meals, distributed $26.1 million in in-kind gifts. Contributors also include corporate and community partners.
The way in which the meal-packing program is set up, it makes it easy for churches to host a multigenerational, accessi-ble event; any person of any ability can help … any walk of life and age of life. And it’s fun! But the bottom line is
bringing glory to God while having the opportunity to pro-vide a better quality of life for hungry children.
For volunteers and event organizers, Rise Against Hunger’s appeal is both emotional and practical. There is the immedia-cy of packing those meals and knowing that the next time those bags will be opened will be to feed hungry children, combined with the efficiency of a turn-key operation. It is a way to reach busy families, couples and individuals with lim-ited time. You can come in and be part of a two-hour shift and feel very rewarded. That experience also can be a gateway “to bigger, broader service opportunities.”
These meals represent thousands of congregations, of all siz-es, from those who invest enough for 10,000 meals, which you can do in 2 hours with forty people, to those who do half a million or a million over a weekend. It’s also an example of The United Methodist Church’s connectional system at work.
The ability for all generations to help pack meals for Rise Against Hunger is appealing to congregations like Dunwoody United Methodist Church, as
demonstrated at last year’s “Foodstock” event. The metro Atlanta congrega-
tion has assembled more than 2 million meals since 2012 for the ministry.
The United Methodist Women have several events planned for Septem-ber. 1). Celebration of Women Tea on Saturday, September 8 from 2-4 PM in the Hebrews Café. Please bring your favorite tea cup & saucer. Contact Janet Sillhart at [email protected] to register your attendance. 2). South District Day Apart on Wednesday, September 12 at Camp Innabah beginning at 9AM. Theme is “Sisters, Working Hand-in-Hand, Putting Faith into Action”. Registra-tion is $12 per person, incudes lunch. Contact Harriett Ziegenfuss at 610-678-3107 if you wish to at-tend. 3). Meet author Jonna-Lynn Man-delbaum on Wednesday, Septem-ber 26. She is a retired missionary nurse having served in Mozam-bique. She had to cancel her visit in the spring due to illness. She will speak in the Music Room from 4:30-5:30 pm. This group of women who study, support each other through Chris-tian fellowship and find ways to put their faith into action welcomes all women. For more information con-tact Harriett Ziegenfuss (610-678-3107) or Anna Bickhart (610-670-1671).

We had a great time at Citizens Bank Park on August 4th. We were fortu-nate to be there for the Wall of Fame Night honoring Roy Halladay. He was regarded as a wonderful father, husband and team player. There were also past players that were present and honored. It was fun seeing all of them. The weather could have been cooler, but at least it wasn’t raining. We were able to hear the Liberty Bell in center field ring four times. The first inning there was a homerun, which set the tone for the whole game. Glad to have Bieber Transportation take us to the park safely and provide such great service.

Join Circle of Friends as they visit The Miller Center on Friday, September 21st at 7:00 pm for Sandy Mortimer’s “The Lure and Lore of Deserts.” This film is about discovering what lured—and what continues to lure—humans to six of the deserts in the world. Three are in the Middle East and three are in North America. It is said the desert is where God first talked with man, and the deserts of Egypt, Israel and Jordan are filled with sacred stories. While the magnitude of sands has done their part to obsure the tales, you will shift through the past and present and uncover those stories. To RSVP, contact John & Donna Kramer at 610-375-1119.
You are invited to join in an interactive prayer vigil from 10 AM -1PM on Saturday, September 15 in the Reiner Education Building. Each prayer station will guide you in prayer for yourself, your church, your community, and your world. This powerful experience will change how you pray! You will find healing and comfort as you deepen your relationship with the Triune God. God is welcoming you to spend time to experience his love in a new way. The Prayer Vigil is appropriate for families with children 10 years and up to attend together. You move through the stations at your own pace. Plan on 30-60 minutes for the experience. Please, RSVP to the church office for a starting time slot by 9/13.
At West Lawn, we have an army of Prayer Warriors. There is always room for one more to join their voice in chorus with others lifting up the needs of our home, church, community and the world. West Lawn UMC offers several opportunities for those called specifically to the ministry of prayer. The first is our Altar Prayer Team. These individuals receive intensive training for their duties. They make a commitment to serve a minimum of twice per month at the altar, participate in ongoing study and spiritual growth, and attend a support and educational meeting on a monthly basis. Our next training for the Altar Prayer Team is September 22 from 8:30 AM-3:00PM in HeBrews Café. At this training, you will learn listening skills, information on confidentiality rules, as well as practice praying with others. If you are interested in more information or would like to explore your call to this ministry, contact Pastor Jean Howe @ [email protected] or call 610-678-5611. Our Prayer Chain volunteers receive prayer requests throughout the week and pray for these requests while keeping all infor-mation confidential. If you are interested in this ministry, please contact Anna Bickhart (610-670-1671) or Mabel Reighley (610-678-5141) for the next training dates.

Include your address at school and we will help you find a church home away from home.
This year’s Women’s Retreat will be held at the Traber Center in Spring City, PA on November 2-4, 2018. The cost for the weekend will be the same as last year, $130 per person (3-4 per room). Our speaker for this year will be Michele Giletto speak-ing on the theme
Walking in Your Purpose;
Wearing the Shoes Made For You
After a series of life events and hardships, Michele was counseled to “get into and stay in the Word of God.” When she did, her eyes were opened and she received a hunger and thirst for God’s Word that she had never experienced before. Michele received a calling in 2004 to begin a prayer ministry. Her calling is to lead women to experience their own personal relationship with God and feed their soul through God’s holy Word.
Are you walking in the purpose that God is calling you to? Are you on your way to becoming all you believe God has destined for you?
Join us at this year’s retreat as we explore these questions and many others. Put on your shoes today and begin walking in His holy, perfect purpose for your life.

Quality of Life It is very hard to accept an early death. When friends die who are seventy, eighty, or ninety years old, we may be in deep grief and miss them very much, but we are grateful that they had long lives. But when a teenager, a young adult, or a person at the height of his or her career dies, we feel a protest rising from our hearts: “Why? Why so soon? Why so young? It is unfair.” But far more important than our quantity of years is the quality of our lives. Jesus died young. St. Francis died young. St Therese of Lisieux died young. Martin Luther King Jr., died young. We do not know how long we will live, but this not knowing calls us to live every day, every week, every year of our lives to its fullest potential.

Join Dick Freeze on Monday evenings at 7:00 pm for a new Bible Study entitled “Jesus the Game Changer,” a series of interview of authors,
academics and others in the UK, USA, India, Aus-tralia and other locations exploring how the life and teaching of Jesus changed the world. This study will be in a video and discussion format, and will run about 11 weeks (start date not yet determined).
The first step is the hardest… Deep within you lies the same faith and longing that sent Peter walking across the wind-swept Sea of Galilee toward Jesus. In what ways is the Lord telling you, as he did Peter, "Come." John Ortberg invites you to consider the incredible potential that awaits you outside your comfort zone. Out on the risky waters of faith, Jesus is waiting to meet you in ways that will change you forever, deepening your character and your trust in God. The experience is terrifying. It's thrilling beyond belief. It's everything you'd expect of someone worthy to be called Lord. The choice is yours to know him as only a water-walker can, aligning yourself with God's purpose for your life in the process. There's just one requirement: “If You Want to Walk on Water, You've Got to Get Out of the Boat”. This 6 week study begins Monday, September 10th in Room 110 of the Reiner Education Building at 7 pm.

WHAT AN INCREDIBLE SUMMER!!!! It is hard to believe that another
summer has come and gone. This summer was another incredibly busy
season, but with very fruitful ministry. Our group went on a mini-mission
trip to help Pocono Plateau prepare for summer camp, helped with kids
VBS, attended the Creation Music Festival, Sent the largest group in years
to summer camp, Attended A closer walk, helped with the peach festival
and then helped run the new Adult VBS. It was amazing to watch our
wonderful group of students bond with one another, serve with love and
compassion and most importantly grow in their relationship with Jesus!!!!
PAGE 12 INVITE, EMBRACE, EMPOWER
What an amazing opportunity we have to continue to work with youth who visit our community to serve as part of their summer vacation. This year we had the privilege to work with United Methodist youth and their leaders from churches in New Jersey. Watching these students learn new skills and show compassion to a neighbor in need is our favorite part of what we do.
While several disabled homeowners had their ramps painted and other repairs completed, they also received the love and care of the team of youth serving in their homes. They were offered the opportunity to connect in a way that only comes from serving in this mission field.
A late request was received from a woman who recently lost her husband. She was in tears because she just realized that her husband was not there to install the new curtail rod she had just purchased. A small team was sent to her home to help with the installation and to trim a few overgrown bushes in her garden. But most importantly, they prayed with her. This little act of love made a big difference.
Little Acts of Love was also awarded a grant from the First United Church of Christ Mission Fund of the Berks County Community Foundation to host 20 local low-income youth for a week of summer service camp. We are currently in the planning stages for this event which is scheduled for next summer. While our typical volunteers arrive with leader-ship and chaperones with some skills, this may be more difficult with a struggling congregation looking to step out into the mission field for the first time. We are looking for both volunteers and sponsors for this event. If you would like to assist us with this program, please contact Alice Moyer at 484-258-2086.
Most importantly, we thank you for your prayers and financial support to our ministry. We could not accomplish all that we do without you. Thank you! -The Board of Directors of Little Acts of Love

Food, Discus-sion and Open conversation are key to the course. The course is a perfect place for you to ask ques-tions like:
Who is Jesus? How can I have faith? How can I make the most out of the rest of my life? What about church?
The Alpha course is 12 weeks and begins on Thursday, Septem-
ber 6th at 6:00 pm in room 109. Missing a session doesn't hurt as
each week is a different question. Please, RSVP for the light sup-

Carolyn was searching for an active
church for quite a while, and found
that WLUMC was so community-
involved. She has been married for 47
years to Ken, and has two daughters,
Christa and Diana, and one grandson,
Gabriel. Carolyn volunteers as an Ed-
ucational Docent at the Lehigh Valley
Zoo, and at a Food Pantry in Lehigh
County. She taught French and Eng-
lish as a Second Language at Exeter
High School for 38 years, and has vol-
unteered as the Christmas Coordina-
tor at the Salvation Army in Reading
since 2010. Carolyn enjoys making
handmade cards.
Pastor Jeff & WLUMC, We are simply “blown away”
by your love and kindness for City Light Ministries.
I don’t know where to start… Thank you for your
quarterly offerings—so very much appreciated! And
for the Quad W ladies—my goodness, what an amaz-
ing blessing they were! Such a mighty move of God
on our kids, thanks in large part to Quad W. What
an impact! Thank you my brother, and thank you to
all at WLUMC! Blessings always, Joe, City Light
Dear WLUMC,
Thank you very much for the flowers
that were at the funeral of Sherry
Chambers. She loved flowers, and she
had many happy memories of WLUMC.
