what you will need for assembly
In our humble beginnings we ran a bike-powered smoothie booth at Northern California music festivals called “The Juice Pedaler”. We saw the smiles and excitement as people jumped on our bike blender and poured their heart into a thick tangy smoothie. Now we’re excited to have you joining our quest to spread the spirit of pedaling.
Pedaling to create spin art may seem like a small act, but for many people it’ll be their first time giving energy back, which can open the door to many other personal choices that benefit their health and fitness and our environment. So thank you! And please keep us posted on your progress as you Rock The Bike! Yours,
Paul Freedman, Founder

SUPPLIES AND TIPS
RUNNING YOUR SPIN ART STATION
CARE AND CLEANING
• Tempera paint: An array of colors is fun, but using too many at once will result in brown. Tempera paint itself is too thick to use with Spin Art, and must be diluted – mix roughly 1:1 or 2:1 Tempera paint to water.
• Squeeze bottles: Available from hardware stores, restaurant supply stores (diner ketchup bottles) and art supply stores. Look for squeeze bottles with a small opening in the nozzle. Some squeeze bottles come with the nozzle sealed – you must snip off the end of the nozzle to use it. This gives you control over the size of the opening. A small opening makes a tight stream and yields precise spirals and circles in the finished artwork.
• Clothespins and string: Hang artwork for 15 minutes, or until fully dry.• Paper: Office paper is acceptable, and a great way to reuse paper printed
on one side. If buying new paper, aim for a bit heavier stock (32 lb, matte). Heavier paper is easier to handle once wet with paint, and less likely to wrinkle while drying.
• Pen or pencil: Have artists sign their paper before creating, for easy pick-up afterward. Pens can also be used with Spin Art at low speed to make spirals!
• Sponges and water: After a spin art session, it’s a good idea to clean up the paint that collects inside the drum and under the easel.
• Manage the station’s line, which can quickly form with eager spin artists, by writing each artist’s name in a corner of their paper. Place the papers in order, so both you and the upcoming artists will know who is on deck.
• When an artist is up, call their name and encourage them to pick three colors from the bottles on the table (too many colors will create brown). Ready the three selected bottles, setting aside all other colors. Tuck each corner of the artist’s paper under the platter’s easel cord.
• Pedal the bike slowly and steadily up to speed. No need to sprint – the belt can slip, or paint may splatter on the artist’s clothes or face. Give the artist their time to create at their own pace. Ring the bike bell, and say a few words of encouragement as each artist finishes up.
• To achieve beautiful spirals and circles, know that the platter is spinning quickly, so minimal arm and hand movement is needed. For tight spirals, squeeze the bottle steadily while moving your hand from the center to the outside of the drum. For circles, fix the bottle in one position and squeeze.
• Estimate crowd flow based on each artist taking 2–3 minutes to create their piece (20–30 artists per hour).
• Spin Art is festive and makes a great decoration while it’s drying. Hang pieces with clothespins and string, or lay them out for display on a table.
Tempera paint is water soluble, you can wipe off excess paint with a sponge while wet. For less mess, wait until the paint dries, then chip it off with a knife or screwdriver. Remove the easel from the drum, and dry it in direct sunlight.
