The Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Brian Rutenberg: Tidesong, featuring works by South Caro-lina native Brian Rutenberg, on view in the Museum’s Main Gallery, from Oct. 23 through Jan. 10, 2010. Organized by the Jerald Melberg Gal-lery in Charlotte, NC, the exhibition features abstract landscape paintings - two of which are thirteen feet wide. Inspired by the landscape and waterways of his home state, Rutenberg’s work combines brilliant color with expressive brushwork to create visually stunning abstract paintings. This exhibition accompanies the release of Brian Rutenberg: The Sensation of Place, the first ever major monograph on the artist’s paintings and drawings.

Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, SC, Offers Works by Brian Rutenberg

The Charleston Artist Guild will open the doors on their new gallery location at 160 East Bay Street in downtown Charleston, SC, and throughout the month of October they will be featuring works by its new expanded group of exhibiting member artists. The CAG gallery is unique in that its mem-bers share one purpose, although their paths are varied. The Gallery offers the art lover a complex diversity of opinions, viewpoints and methods. The new bright, bold atmospheric space will showcase diverse works from the talented members in oil, watercolor, mixed-media, pastel, acrylics and photography. The gallery presence is professionally managed by caring artisans who believe in the esthetic value of art, promoting the practice of teaching, and recognition of fine arts.

The Charleston Artist Guild has distin-guished itself with efforts in supporting com-munity outreach programs. The Guild artists have widely participated in art related events such as: Southeastern Wildlife Expo, Piccolo Spoleto Festival, 1st Federal’s People Choice Exhibit, MOJA Arts Festival, The Magnolia Plantation Exhibit, The Blackbaud Exhibit, and also continuing exhibits at The Footlight Players Theatre. Titled Tidesong, the exhibition includes recent paintings on canvas and works on paper that explore the artist’s fascination with the land-scape and quality of light along the South Carolina coast. Reflecting on his work, Rutenberg has said, “My imagination was in large part formed by my childhood experience grow-ing up in the Lowcountry of South Carolina from Myrtle Beach down to Charleston and to this day I still use that sense of light and that geography as kind of a springboard, as a starting point for the work even though the work does not end up being about the Lowcountry or anything down there. There’s a certain kind of light down there when you’re around a lot of water. It’s like a silvery, blue light that permeates everything. It can be melancholic. It can be joyful.
