Fall FestThe Northwest Valley has something for everyone

Ah, fall. While the onset of autumn means something entirely different for people in other parts of the country, here, it signals a time when heat-exhausted locals can finally venture out and comfortably enjoy all the Valley has to offer.

In the Northwest Valley, this time of year means one thing—and one thing only—to many Valley residents: sports. Pumped up fans flock to the University of Phoenix Stadium to see the Arizona Cardinals—who, last year, stole our hearts and made us believe in the glory of the game once again—dominate the field or to Jobing.com Arena to see the Phoenix Coyotes shred the competition on ice.

Yet, as much as the Northwest Valley pleases those who enjoy the thrill of competition, the area is filled with many other refined pursuits, perfect for those who appreciate fine dining and innovative arts.

For art lovers, the area offers everything from dazzling live shows at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts, to the hidden cultural gems in historic downtown Glendale, to the one-of-a-kind galleries tucked in the artistically diverse communities of Peoria, Surprise and Arrowhead. And for those looking to please their palates with unique new tastes, the Northwest Valley serves up a delicious variety of dining options that cover a spectrum of flavors.

In this issue of You Are Here: Northwest Valley, discover some of the most culturally diverse and appetizingly pleasing destinations in the Valley. Whether you’re in the mood for arts, cuisine—or even a good game—the Northwest Valley has something for everyone.

GettING Here The Northwest Valley is

primarily made up of the cities of Glendale, Peoria, Sun City and Surprise. Farther to the north is the Deer Valley and Lake Pleasant areas, while to the southwest is

Litchfield Park.

By Car Get to the Northwest Valley

by taking Interstate 17 north or the Loop 101 west. On the I-17, exit Glendale Avenue to reach Glendale, Bell Road to Peoria and Surprise. Take the same exits from the Loop 101. The area can also be

accessed from Interstate 10 where drivers can exit avenue

side streets heading north.

By Bus Valley Metro serves the entire Northwest Valley

area with transit centers at Metrocenter and Arrowhead

Towne Center, as well as park and rides in Glendale, Peoria and Deer Valley. For routes and schedules, visit

valleymetro.org.

By Bicycle There are designated bike

trails throughout the Northwest Valley. Paved and unpaved multi-use trails are available, giving bicyclists

easy access to retail and residential developments.

Ask any shop hound and they’ll tell you: if you’re looking for something truly original and unique, boutique shopping is the way to go.

Fortunately, the Northwest Valley is teeming with specialty shops filled with one-of-kind finds. If it’s vintage clothing you’re after, check out Matilda’s Vintage Clothing in Glendale. Sisters-in-law

and owners rose and Sandy were so inspired by their own love for vintage wear that they opened up this boutique that specializes in 1930s and 1950s cocktail attire. For unique kitsch for your home, check out Bo’s Funky Stuff, where you can find anything and everything from old advertising signs to classic pinball machines. In Peoria, stop by Wink Boutique. this trendy little shop is reminiscent of boutique meccas like Melrose in Los Angeles,

especially with such lines as Betsey Johnson and Gwen Stefani’s Harjuku Lovers Fragrance. And with the holidays right around the corner, the Christmas Cottage offers popular and hard-to-find holiday ornaments, villages and collectibles. From vintage clothing to unique items for your home, whatever you’re looking for, there’s a boutique in the Northwest Valley that’s bound to have it.

Got kids? If so, there’s no better place in the Valley to keep young minds engaged and bodies fit than in the Northwest Valley.

From swim schools to youth theaters to recreation centers packed to the hilt with activities for kids and their parents, the Northwest Valley is a paradise for family fun. Looking for someplace for your budding young skateboarder to blow off some steam? roll on over to the Foothills Sk8

Court Plaza, where double bumps, a fun box and bowls will test their speed, agility and mad skills. If your little one is destined to be the next Miley Cyrus or Selena Gomez, give them a leg up by enrolling them in the Spotlight Youth theatre, a nonprofit community theater that produces family-focused productions and offers performance workshops and camps that hone young performers’ acting and dancing skills. And even though we’re going into the fall season, that doesn’t

mean we still can’t squeeze in some water fun. the Valley’s newest water attraction, Wet ‘n Wild Phoenix opened this summer in Glendale, giving families the wettest and wildest adventures they’ll ever have. Don’t wait, though. the park is open until Nov. 1.
