We know that turf and amenity managers across Europe today are now more aware of climate change than ever before. They understand how smart best practice plays a vital role in sound environmental stewardship.

Environmental aspects are becoming an increasingly important consideration in purchasing decisions too. Local councils and municipalities, sports associations and venues, are all looking at ways to reduce or limit greenhouse gas emissions and to operate in a carbon-neutral manner.

Everris has a number of stringent measures in place to ensure that processes, business activities and products are fully compliant with, and often exceed, current standards, directives and mandatory international legislation.

As well as meeting all legal requirements, Everris is an organisation wholly committed to a programme of continuous improvement for quality, health and safety systems and processes, and in terms of our environmental impact.

Everris is continually working on the development of new technologies to improve the environmental performance of products without reducing their efficacy. To ensure all our products are as effective as possible, they are tested in many different soil and climatic conditions at trial sites and research institutes worldwide.

As a leading global manufacturer of water-soluble, slow-release and controlled-release fertilizers and products, Everris is acutely aware of the increasing importance of responsible environmental protection and sustainable practice.

ISO 14001: 2004

The Everris plant in Heerlen, The Netherlands, where controlled release fertilizers and related products are developed, manufactured and distributed, first obtained accreditation to environmental management system standard ISO 14001 in 2002.

Approved by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) this international specification for environment management systems provides a structured framework for ensuring that the negative effects on the environment are reduced to a minimum and that there is a continual focus on improving environmental performance.

OHSAS 18001: 2007

To ensure that we provide optimal working conditions and to ensure that world class standards for health, safety and wellbeing are an integral part of our organization’s activities, Everris International B.V. has been certified for compliance with Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance to the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSAS) since 2004.

ISO 9001: 2008

For development, manufacturing, distribution, sales and marketing of fertilizers and related products, Everris International B.V. has been certified for compliance with Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance to quality management standard ISO 9001 since 1998. Compliance with ISO 9001 provides a focus on continuous improvement of business processes for the benefit of our customers, suppliers and staff.

Supplier Selection & EvaluationEverris has a rigorous selection and evaluation process for contractors, suppliers and other third parties. We require businesses to act in an ethical, responsible manner and to attain and maintain the highest possible standards of performance. Our evaluation process requires suppliers to meet relevant standards and assessment criteria for supplying environmental, quality, logistics and maintenance services.

Training & DevelopmentTo ensure our staff are properly trained, Everris ensures that where relevant, continuing professional development is completed and staff gain professional accreditation.

In the UK for example, staff are FACTS (Fertilizer Advisers Certification and Training Scheme) and BASIS (British Agrochemical Standards Inspection Scheme) trained.

Grass is the most natural, sustainable and carbon-friendly sports surface, fixing greenhouse gases from the air in soil and providing oxygen in return. Everris is an active supporter of leading industry research* into technologies, products and turf management practices; all factors that affect environmental impact on grass surfaces.

Using life cycle analysis into the type, construction, and management of sports fields, researchers have now mapped emissions, from the production and processing of grass seed right through to construction, maintenance and sports field replacement.*

Recent research in 2012 emphasised that annual maintenance programmes remain a critical factor, currently accounting for around 80-90% of environmental impact. Reducing impact further can be achieved by

• Using slow and controlled-release fertilizers with increased longevity which require fewer applications and less fuel. In comparison with mineral agricultural fertilisers, the risk of leaching also decreases.

• Using the latest grass varieties which extends the turf growing season, reduces damage in the winter, improves winter colour and tackles specific conditions. Technically advanced grass seed coatings help boost germination and establishment of new turf. Grasses that germinate at lower temperatures and establish at a faster rate allow overseeding to take place on sports fields all year round, even in cooler autumn and winter months.

Everris can help European turf and amenity managers improve annual maintenance practices further in the future, so that the best products are used in the most environmentally efficient and responsible way.

We promote and share industry best practice through Integrated Turf Management, or iTurf.

* Research into the environmental impact of grass sports fields was carried out by

Blonk Milieuadvies in Gouda in 2012, on the instructions of Plantum and jointly financed

by the Productschap Akkerbouw (Arable farming commodity board). A steering group

with representatives from the chain supervised the project under the auspices of two

experts from research institutions outside the Netherlands.

The summary is also available in digital form at www.plantum.nl and www.kennisakker.nl.

Soil is the grass plant’s nutrient resource and the turf manager’s aim is a balance of nutrients within it. The uptake and availability of certain nutrients can be restricted by excesses or insufficient quantities of other nutrients, so a soil analysis helps to determine the balance of nutrients within the rootzone.

Regular maintenance is essential for premium quality turf. When turf is mown, nutrients are removed in clippings and must be replaced. Fertilizers help create conditions which result in a uniform surface, keep turf healthy and aid recovery from wear and tear. As well as improving plant health, fertilizers enhance turf appearance. Fertilizers play an important role in Integrated Turf Management (ITM) programmes.

To waste less and gain disease resistance

Some fertilizers, including conventional, liquid and water soluble, release all their nutrients immediately after application. These products may deliver colour and fast growth, but nutrients can also be lost as quickly, through flushes of growth (which then needs extra mowing), surface run-off, leaching or gaseous losses.

Slow release and controlled-release fertilizers deliver nutrients over a more certain period, providing the most consistent and reliable benefits:

• Safe, consistent and efficient nutrient release based on turf need

• Reduces losses from leaching

• Enhances turf quality

• Reduces incidence of disease

Our main technologies are

A controlled-release nitrogen source that delivers nutrients gradually. Nutrient release is primed by moisture permeating through the outer polymer channels, through micro-channels in the sulphur layer and into the nutrient core where the urea is solubilised. Once the urea is solubilised, it then travels back through the same pathways, is released and made available for plant uptake.

Slow release Potassium and Silica matrix – a technology developed by Everris and unique to SierraformGT that delivers Potassium and Silica in a controlled way. Potassium is important for water regulation, protein synthesis, storage of starch and meristematic growth in plants as well as activating enzymes. Silica improves both the structure and strength of cells, helping protect the plant from disease. SilK reduces Potassium loss from leaching and helps maintains a continuous supply of Potassium and Silica to the grass plant. Research has shown that as a result, turf is better able to tolerate stress from wear, drought and disease pressure.

Our unique H2Pro Conserve technology is used in our wetting and water conservation products, specifically developed for more effective water management. Products offer preventative and curative properties and are suitable for wet and dry conditions and have the flexibility for application at any time of year. H2Pro Conserve helps turf managers attain optimal soil moisture levels, lowering irrigation requirements and helping prevent disease.

You and Everris working together with nutrition that’s efficient and precise

Fertilizer efficiency rests on striking a balance between the natural growth pattern of grass and environmental factors of climate, disease, water resource and surface traffic.

Maintaining surfaces using controlled-release technologies is more environmentally-responsible. Controlled-release fertilizers prevent the feast and famine cycle and encourage better

rooting which helps turf withstand potential stresses of summer drought. The efficiency of nutrient application is improved, turf quality is enhanced and fewer applications are required each season.

Everris’ slow-release and controlled-release fertilizers products are at the forefront of fertilizer technology.

As turf enters a natural growth peak, nutrients removed in clippings need to be replaced using fertilizers.
