Air Pollutants of Concern

Ozone - susceptibility to

respiratory infections - increased risk of

heart attacks and strokes - increase in

mortality/premature deaths

- damage to crops and natural vegetation

Particulate Matter - increased irritation of

the airways, coughing or difficulty breathing

- aggravated asthma - irregular heartbeat - heart attacks - cancer risk (diesel

PM) 5

Both pollutants have potential for a variety of respiratory and cardiopulmonary impacts:

EPA Classification : SevereAttainment Deadline: June 2019

Includes Sacramento and Yolo Counties, and portions of El Dorado, Placer,

Sutter and Solano Counties

Air Pollutants of Concern

Particulate Matter (PM 10, PM 2.5)

Major Sources:

Air Pollutants of Concern

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted during the combustion of fossil fuels traps heat in the atmosphere and contributes to global warming.

Motor Vehicles and Air Quality

Motor vehicles have become significantly more energy efficient and less polluting, however population growth and increased driving has created the need to shift to cleaner technologies. 11

Page 12: Yolo-Solano AQMD: PEV Benefits

Motor Vehicles and Air Quality Autos and light/med

trucks account for over 45% of the ozone forming emissions and almost 40% of the GHG emissions in the Sacramento Region

Motor Vehicles and Air Quality

13

One strategy to help meet our air quality standards, greenhouse gas reduction goals and reduce petroleum dependence is to shift from gasoline vehicles to PEV’s.

Page 14: Yolo-Solano AQMD: PEV Benefits

Air Quality Benefits of PEV PEV vs. average new gasoline

vehicle driven 12,000 miles/year for 8 years:

- Annual reductions in ozone and particulate forming emissions: 14 pounds per year (112 pounds over

8 years) - Annual GHG reductions: 5.4 metric

tons of CO2 (43.2 metric tons over 8 years)

Gasoline Vehicle vs. PEV “Upstream” Emissions

Gasoline Vehicle Emissions Tailpipe emissions

Upstream/power plant Emissions associated with

getting gasoline to market:

- Importing of crude oil in tanker ships

- Refining of oil to gasoline- Trucks delivering gas to

fueling station

- Gas station operations/ pumping gasoline

into vehicle

Plug-in Vehicle Emissions

No tail-pipe emissions

Power plant emissions: PEV recharges directly from

electrical grid eliminating many steps and upstream emissions associated with gasoline production

15

Page 16: Yolo-Solano AQMD: PEV Benefits

Additional PEV Benefits

Reduced dependence on petroleum - Most electricity in CA produced from natural gas/hydro/wind/solar

No coolant or motor oil - less potential for water pollution

from spills and storm run-off Quiet operation
