end of disbelief and distressis the way to attain God

Patanjali always advocated for independence leaving every enslavementbehind. Sashtras(holy books), teachers, traditions, garlands, temples,

mosques, shrines, gurudwaras and churches all make us dependent. Maharshi makesus religious and true believers. But he never pretends. He says that you yourself are thecentre of any religion. He does not divide dharma in the name of icons. He inspires usto stride towards our goals. He tells us to remain unaffected in times of happiness andsorrow, abuse and praise, prosperity and adversity and even victory and defeat. Alwaysendeavor. Always introspect. Through endeavor, struggle, enterprise and execution ofyour duties march forward in search of yourself. Alongwith this, always have faith inthe Almighty. This whole process will filter your conscience, and your distresses will beminimized.

Maharishi Patanjali never asks to pray to a statue or idol. In his opinion an absoluteend of sufferings is the sole way to attain divinity. He says that the ultimate aim ofKriyayoga is to attain a state of meditation, self-exploration and absolute end of allyour desires for trifles. To clear this impurity of conscience, he advises us to followAshtangyoga. Maharishi Patanjali, while describing Ashtangyoga, which includes Yam,Niyam, Asan, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyan and Samadhi, says that without

following these it is impossible to get spiritual and universal peace. Behind every Yogaand practice of Patanjali there is only one aim - to remove darkness and impurity.Disbelief, illusion and prejudices must be left aside. He talks of attaining a transcendalstate through Dharana, Dhyan, Samadhi and self-restrain. In his opinion everything iswithin us and we need not go anywhere in search of them. Through self-control, headvocates that knowledge of the past and the future is possible, while also teaching usto become invisible. Along with this, he talks of various attainments like Akasman andPerkaya, Anima, Laghima and Garima. He reveals many things about human anatomy, celestial science etc.

Maharshi Patanjali introduces us to the finer mysteries of the world. He describesfour types of Samadhis(state of meditation) i. e.-Savikalpak, Nirvikalpak, Sawichar andNirvichar. His vision is scientific. He advocates the path of Truth, Devotion, and abso-lute Happiness. He reminds us of the reality, mortality and wretchedness of life. Heexplains yoga as science. He says that every yoga form has a definite result. He reiter-

ates that the amalgamation of Gyanyoga, Bhaktiyoga and Karmyoga leads to complete-ness of Yoga. But he is not unidirectional. He is not prejudiced. He marches on spiritualbut with a scientific approach. He does not teach to quit but he enlightens us. He keepsus steady amidst war and peace. I like Patanjali because I find his teaching absolutelytrue. No one has ever motivated me more than him. Through yoga as our conscienceincreases, and we begin to realise the mysteries of yoga. We must continue our journeyon the path of spirituality and meditation, and God himself will help us. I also am apractitioner of yoga and to see how the truth unfolds in front of me gradually. Our ulti-mate goal is to achieve truth, knowledge of ourselves and to explore our identities.

    Maharshi

    CONSERVATION OF

    EnvironmentIS A MUST

squeezing of arctic sea (at a rate of0.6 million km square per year)are all man made problems.

The Inter-governmetal Panel onClimate Change (IPCC) too, hasbeen unable to analyse the impactof humans on the climate. However, in the Panel's report, ithas stated that the impact of man-caused emissions can be seen inremote areas. An expert on cli-mate change, Peter Staut has saidthat in order to stop global warm-ing, human activities will have to

be controlled. He has further saidthat due to an increase in tempera-ture, the rate of evaporation hasalso increased, which has added tothe salinity of oceans. Evaporationis the chief reason behind theincrease of humidity and the irreg-ularity in rain patterns. It rainsheavily in areas where there is noneed, while rain eludes those areasin dire need.

    According to the International

Organisation for Migration, anestimated 20 million people will beforced to migrate by 2050. Manyorganisations fear this numbermay exceed 70 million. By 2050the world's population will bearound 9 billion, and 8 % of thesewill suffer from the effects of pol-lution.

We must understand that whatwe do today will bound back to usand others in the future. Only if weadopt a lifestyle which adores

An increase in pollution is makinglife tough for the common man, while also making it very difficultfor other animals to survive. Thesituation has become so bad thatmany species are on the verge ofextinction. An organisation,International Union forConservation of Nature, works forthe various environmental causes.According to a report issued bythe organisation, 687 species ofplants and animals are facing thethreat of extinction. In 2008 thisnumber was 659. 28 species havebecome a part of this list within ayear.

The problem of water pollutionis also increasing at rapid pace. Incities, the disposal of industrialgarbage is not taken seriously. Theeasiest place to dump them are riv-ers. As a result, the river no longerremains clean, but becomes adrain. The Ganga and Yamuna areapt examples of the same.

The extinction of species is awakeup call for us. The negativeimpact of such a scenario is nowvisible. Any extinction simplymeans a disturbance or an imbal-ance in our ecosystem. All speciesform a complete cycle. If one goesmissing, the complete cycle willcollapse. Everyone will pay theprice for this.

The felling of trees have con-tributed a shocking 15% to carbonemission. Global warming is a manmade hazard. 95% people believe

we are the sole cause of climatechange, while the remaining 5 %believe natural processes are thecause. These figures have beenestablished from studies conductedat Edinburgh, Melbourne andVictoria universities.

A Times Online report illus-trates the extent of human impacton the climate. Apart from globalwarming, the increase in salinity ofseas, the increase in humidity, theirregular rain pattern and the

    Extinction ofspecies is a

wakeup call fous. The negatiimpact is visibnow.

    With everypassing daymore dangeroconsequence

    will follow.There extinctiosimply meansdisturbance o

    imbalance in oecosystem.

    SPECIAL:

This years sharp risein temperature inApril has surprisedmany. It seems as if fireis falling from the sky.The earth is as hot as afurnace, with a depletingwater layer, decreasing

rainfall, frequentdroughts, and terriblelevels of water-air-landpollution. Along withthese, physical pollution, cultural and emotionalpollution are alsoincreasing greatly. Thisis seen everywhere. Ifwe don't contain andcontrol this, the wholeworld will descend intodarkness where T.B.,cancer, diabetics, heartdeseases, psoriasis, physical and mentaldisabilities, nervousproblems, hypertensionand other complexdisorders will bewidespread andcommon. The body willeat the body. Man willdie weeping. If we do

not care for andconserve the environ-ment today, what will weleave for our futuregenerations? Think awhile. Let's make thisworld a better place tolive with environmentconservation, and notintoxication.

about 96 species of animals, 67 species of birds and 46 types of fishes are on the brink ofextinction. Apart from this 217 varieties of vegetables are fighting for their existence. This

shows us how alarming the situation has become. The government has not taken any serious step to savethem and stop their extinction. Our negligence has ensured this issue does not get discussed enough. Whilecertain endangered species are talked about at times, there is still a great lack of awareness, which is essen-tial to tackle the situation.

Mother Nature, can we save thefuture.

The present and the future isdetermined by man's action. Wemay not feel the effects of theseactions in the present, but thewhole community will face theseconsequences.

Once we understand our roleand duties toward protecting andconservating the environment, once we accept its importance, only then can we easily develop acommon global programme for theconservation and betterment of theenvironment, which will be highlydependent on the attitudes of peo-ple and their acceptance of it.Man's description of the environ-ment and his committment to saveit will define the future course ofaction. If everyone believes theyhave a duty toward the society, only then will the future be bright. To see the world in a new perspec-

tive, one will have to be generous, and not selfish. Only then can weexecute our duties toward society. The measurement of humanachievement in terms of per capitaincome will not go a long way.Man needs be measured in termsof his abilities to achieve his goals.

It wont be wrong to say thatthrough religion we can curb ourgreed to exhaust nature. To over-turn the attitude of acquiringmore, we will first have to disci-pline ourselves. We will have to

respect Mother Nature. We willhave to accept that somewhere, something exists that rules us. Weought to obey the rules.

Every religion and cultureconsist of morals and ideals to reg-ulate our relationship with nature.Along with the directive elementsthere are provisions to criticizeand punish those who dontrespect the Almighty's creation.

In order to develop a stable andsuitable attitude towards the envi-ronment and for the developmentof a healthy universal family con-cept, we have to awaken our con-science. For this a universal codeof conduct specifically for the envi-ronment is required. This will pro-vide the human soul with an eter-nal vision toward nature and itscreative capacities. Through this, the amalgamation of physical factsand spiritual ideals will occur.Through these holy thoughts we

can incorporate the valuesrequired for the promotion of apeaceful world family in the futuregenerations, which will boost therevolution ahead.

Every religionand cultureconsist ofmorals andideals toregulate ourrelationship withnature.

Along with thedirectiveelements thereare provisions to

Pranayama and medicines ofYogapeeth cured my anemia

    Respected Swamiji,

My name is Nehru Ram (ex-Armyman). I am a

native of Kangda, Himachal Pradesh. In 2003 mywife got affected by a desease called plastic anemia.Since then it became routine for us to visit the hos-pital almost every month. She required 2 to 3 unitsof blood every time. Her blood haemoglobin levelwas quite low. She was getting treated at a hospitalbut it was not possible to get cured here. We thenwent to DMC Ludhiana, where one months treat-ment cost us more than a lakh. There was no reliefafter spending that much, so we returned home. The problems were persistent. I then took her to theArmy Hospital in New Delhi. They conducted sever-al tests, but there was no relief. Finally theyreferred her to AIIMS. There they said that this ill-ness has no treatment but they gave me some sol-ace by assuring me that they would try their levelbest. Her treatment at AIIMS cost us 2 lakh. Buthere too she got no relief. Instead, my wife gotweaker as the days passed. We decided to end thetreatment and return home. Naturally we weredepressed at that time. Then, a relative told meabout you. I then told my wife to practicePranayama while watching your programme.Acharya Balkrishna gave us precious advice aboutmedicines. Through his guidance we started takingmedicines of Patanjali Yogapeeth. After six monththere were some signs of improvement. This was aglimmer of hope for us. She regularly doesPranayama. And now, the doctors have said that allher reports are normal. Guruji it all happenedthrough your grace, along with Pranayama andmedication of Patanjali Yogapeeth. We shall remaingrateful to you forever.

    Yours truly,

The Congress, Mayawati andLaloo have at least one thing incommon. They have taken the sameline of action. They are quite cau-tious in their approach towadsBaba. They want to put theirthoughts forward well in advance.Hance a verbal jugglery has begun.

A popular adage - a change ofvision, changes the view - is apt todescribe todays political scene. When Baba threw a stone of changein the ocean of MNCs maliciousstrategy and quagmire of politicalcorruption, it seemed as if a tsuna-mi had come.

With his simple message Do yoga, remain healthy, he hasearned a place in everyones heart. At one point in time, everyone

wanted to be associated with him -industrialist and politicians leader.VIPs would throng to the Patanjali Yogapeeth. One can't forget theinauguration of Patanjali Food andHerbal Park, which cost Rs. 500crore. Mr Gulham Nabi Azad andthe Chairman of the Himalaya DrugCo., Mr Farookh, were specialguests. The next day, the ChiefMinsters of M.P. and Uttarakhand,Mr. Shivraj Singh Chauhan andRamesh Pokherial Nishank, werealso present there. There was a

phase when everyone sang praisesfor Baba and his yoga. But his sud-den announcement has changedtheir tunes.

Based on the elimination of dis-eases, wrongdoings and corruption,Babas arrow seems to be hittingthe bull's eye. Those who treat poli-tics like their personal property arefeeling the heat. In fact, Baba thinksthat by yoga and Pranayama wecan overcome the illness and eradi-cate the cancer of corruption. He isvigilantly taking every step. But thesound of these steps are leavingmany people sleepless. It reflects inthe comments and speeches fromthe corridor of politics. Lets talkabut the Congress first. Last monthYoga Week was celebrated in Delhi.Baba Ramdev was knowingly keptaway in this fucntion that was spon-sored by the Government of Delhi. Here one should note that this prog-amme was organised after theHaridwar function, which GulhamNabi was a special part of. Baba'ssupporters found this to be unsual. But political pundits have correctlyidentified it as part of a calculatedstrategy. Keping in mind the pathon which Baba is marching, thisseems true.

The Congress has remainedmum about this incident. Mayawati,on the other hand, seems set for adirect confrontation. She has publi-cally said that 'those teaching aero-bics, have political ambitions.' She

Ramdev and controversy always have something to do with each other. The first

controversy erupted when communist leader Vrinda Karat alleged that he used

bones in his medicines. With every controversy Baba has emerged clean, his image becoming better

than before. His announcement of launching a party which will contest the coming election, is a hot

subject for everyone. Followers of multinational companies and corrupt individuals are most appre-

hensive. In the Bofors case, V. P. Singh uprooted the Rajiv Gandhi government only through honesty.

In Babas case, besides honesty, he has the strength of established behavior and unlimited spiritual

power generated by yoga and Pranayama.

    Swami

has told her vote bank tokeep a distance from suchthese people. After theRamnavami function, thetrue meaning of her wordsbecame clear to people.Mayawatis vigilance teamhad informed her inadvance about the chang-ing scenario. Baba hadinaugurated aDharmshala, namedafter Maharishi Valmiki,at the same function. Hestarted a langar(freefood scheme) namedafter Ravidas in that veryDharmshala. TheDharmshala's capacity is 1000and the langar is enough for 5000people daily. This might be the rea-son behind Mayawatis anguish.

Now Laloo Yadav too has startedcriticising Baba. He has even saidthat Baba has gone mad. On theother hand, a BJP leader and writerhas made a rather cheap statementwondering where Baba will find thismany able candidates, hence urginghim not to contest elections.

Controversy and Swami Ramdevalways have something to do witheach other. The first controversyerupted when communist leader Vrinda Karat alleged that he usedbones in his medicines. Swami Ramdev

    seems that political parties are

    fearing you.

    Swami ji

I am not against any party or per-son. I only want responsible, hon-est and diligent people to join poli-tics. If our leaders become honest, politics would be purified, my goalwill be achieved. Then we won'trequire to enter politics.

    ?

What ideology will your partybe following and what are

    your three major objectives?

    Swami ji

Our party will work on the theoryof total and spiritual growth. Fornation building, two things arevery important national characterand national leadership. We areneither Leftist or rightist nor pro-West like Congress. Our main aimis to bring 30 million crore of black

money back to India, deposited inforeign banks. Our second aim isto have a law with the provisionsfor capital punishment for corrupt, adulterators and terrorists. Ourthird aim is to change maliciouspolicies of the British.

    ?

But most countries oppose theprovision of capital punish-ment.

    Swami ji

    ?

Recently, when you were on avisit to Nepal, you met Maoistleader Prachanda. It is saidthat he was spellbound by you.

    What were the talks about?

    Swami ji

We talked for quite long. I said tohim that revolution should be acollective process with peace as itsaim. I also said that Maoism isincomplete without spiritualism. To achieve success both should bemerged. Then only we can have abetter result. He wholeheartedlyaccepted my vision.

    ?

Some time back Laloo Yadavsaid that you should not joinpolitics and you have gonecrazy. He also said that when

you were in the controversyfor mixing bones in medicines,it was him who saved you.

    Swami ji

I dont know what did he say. It istrue that allegations were thereagainst me. I am grateful to all whostood up for me. It was my honestyand truthfulness that saved me. Aslong as these virtues are with meno one can do any harm to me. Butthe day they are lost, no one cansave me also. As far as oppositionis concerned, I do not have anypolitical advisor. Barring corruptand dishonest people, everyone ishappy with my approach.

In many countries, includingChina, such provisions are stillthere. Our ancestors used this as atool to purify an evil soul. Hence,we also want to make them freefor their well-being.

?You did not mention the Naxalissue. Recently they killedmany innocent people.

The temporary solution to thisproblem is to make them weapon-less, either through dialogue orpower. But the ultimate solutionlies in development. This develop-ment will come only when there isno corruption. No MNREGA willwork as long as there is corruptionin the system. Even the SarvaShiksha Abhiyan will work asSarva Bhiksha Abhiyan.

    Discussing Arjunasproblems throughSankya Marga

ADiscussing Arjunas problems whilekeeping differences between body andthe soul in mind: Sankhya-Marga meansthe path of knowledge. In this chapter,Arjun's problems have been discussed indetail in the shlokas beginning from 11 to30, through the Sankyan philosophy. Ittreats Prakriti and Purush as different enti-ties, here also Deha (body) and Dehi (soul)have been explained separately. LordKrishna has explained two principles inthe light of Sankhya from Shloka 31 to 38and has dealt with third principle,Swadharma. The first principle is that soulis immortal and eternal. The second theoryexplains: just like when man enters vari-

ous stages of life, i.e. childhood, youthand old age, in the sameway, the

soul also leaves body only toacquire a new one. For exam-

ple, it is like changing into

new clothes and leavingthe older clothes behind.Water, fire and air cannot

affect it. About body it is said that since it

is mortal, theres no point worrying for it.Hence, dear Arjuna! Consider it in this wayas your worries will go in vain. Both Atmaand Body are based on the priciples ofSankhya philosophy.

    BDiscussing Arjunas problem while

keeping Swadharma in mind: LordKrishna explained the third principle ofSwadharma to Arjuna, as discussed inshlokas 31 to 38. According to Geeta, everyone has to perform Dharma. Here, the term dharma has nothing to do withthe philosophies of Hinduism, Islam orChristianity, in fact, it is synonym to onesnature or attitude. If a person with brah-min attitude will do business, he willalways suffer loss. To fight a war isKshatriyas dharma, so, Arjuna you shoulddo your duty. If someone abstains from hisduties then he is committing a sin. Therefore, performing duties are must.Since you are a Kshatriya, then be pre-pared for a war.

Considering Arjunasproblems in thelight of yoga.

As it has already been discussed inearlier contexts that Arjuna is mere repre-sentation of a common man. Lord Krishnahas addressed all possible issues related toa common man in Geeta. Arjunas prob-lems were related to war, whereas ourspertain to lifes battleground. Every pass-ing second is a challenge in itself. Onesolution to such problems have beenanswered according to Sankhya, which

For the readers of Yoga Sandesh, we are publishing the series ofexplaination of Geeta by Swami Ramdev ... Editor

    ShantiShantiElixir

    (ELIXIR OF PEACE)

clearly states that body is mortal and soul

is eternal, so always keep performing yourbasic dharma. However, the second solu-tion has been provided by Yoga drishti. That is karma Yogas vision. We shallexplain it furt her.

ADistinction between Karmkanda ritualand Karmayoga: Once upon a time, Indiawas dominated by rituals. People thoughtthat through sacrifices all desires could befulfilled. Lots of sacrifices were made justfor the sake of a desire. People tried tofulfill every desire by means of Yagya. ButMundakopnishad raised voice against suchrituals. According to the second volume(verse seven) of this Upanishad - it hasbeen said that to cross the ocean of yagya s,there are tools but they are very pliant andloose. Foolish man pursues Yagya to be theonly means and celebrates, they comeagain again in this cycle of life and deathand are caught in the trap. Krishna says.By Karmayoga, I do not mean to say thatthrough rituals people want to reap thefruit of paradise, they are caught in the

pleasures. So, Oh Arjuna! You cannot solve your problems with this thinking. Whatwas Karmkanda at the time of Upanishadsand Geeta has now 'naturalism' or materi-alism. Today, we accomplish our desiresthrough scientific inventions. Bothapproaches are the same. Geeta states thatsolution to the human problems cannot beachieved via Karmakanda.

BKarmayoga: Then how can the prob-

lems of life be solved? According to Geeta, the solution lies in 'Karmayoga'. It has

been explained in verses 39 to 53, ChapterII of Geeta. According to Sankhya, Yogameans Karmsananyas," i.e. sacrifice ofKarma. By considering that soul is eternal, body is earthy; then why we cra ve so muchfor this transitory body. Geetas definitionof 'Karmayoga' means not only to work butlive life according to the teachings ofGeeta. Today also, it imparts same mes-sage that was given to Arjuna on the bat-tlefield of Kurukshetra. Likewise, in thebattle of life, everyone is Arjuna and has toface harsh circumstances and situations ofdespair. However, the question is what isKarmayoga and Karmsananyas? Theanswer is- Karmayoga means abandon-ment of attachment. There are three con-cepts of karma: (1) If we have to sacrificethe results, then why one should do Karma?

    (2) To do Karma and take the result asyour own. (3) Perform the action but dontexpect results. First approach is Tamoguni, second is Rjoguni and the third is Satvaguni.Tamoguni says, if Ill get results only whenI will perform otherwise why to take pain.Rajoguni says, I will do karma and will getfruit. Satvguni karma says- Ill perform, but will not hope for the fruit. LikeTamoguni we cannot turn our back toactions and like Rjoguni monopoly overresult cannot be proved. This sort of coor-dination paves way for Karmayoga.

Dhyana (meditation) is associated with our lives. Each moment isattached to it. In Indian culture, itcompliments our every action. So,whether at home or with family, wealways experience it in some wayor other. For example, when anelderly person advises us to read or walk carefully with attention, it isdhayana. Today we use this wordbut dont bother about its meaning.

We could not gain any physical andspiritual goal or success withoutDhyana. Though meditation is initself is a wonderful process. Weshall try to throw light on some ofthe methods of dhyana briefly.

    Guidelines for Dhyana[1]

Before beginning with Dhyana, oneshould always practice Pranayama. This makes mind calm and increas-es concentration. Calm mind is thekey to Dhyana or Dharana.

    [2]

By doing Kapalbhaati and Anulom- Vilom - Pranayama methodically, mind becomes balanced and sub- jectless automatically. About fiveminutes of Kapalaati and 5-10 min-utes of Anulom - Vilom Pranayamaembodies the divine cycle ofMooladhaar. It starts to go up, itrefines the cycles of our veins. In adivine Jyotipunj (array of light),Sachchidanand gets located inthe heart.

    [3]

Give Dhyana an immense impor-tance while practicing it. Dont letany idea prevail in mind no matterhow good it is. Donation, to do ser-vice, to care for guru and to indulgein cow service and philanthropy- allare sacred things. While Dhyana donot think of them also. Let yourmind indulge only in God, medita-tion or contemplation.

[4] While meditating, your mind andsenses should become introvert, infact, remember this too that you arenot the part of nature, wealth, land, buildings and are free of any emo-tional bond like wife, son or grand-son. This body is also not my natureand I am free from senses liketouch, form, taste, smell and rasa. Ifeel free from lust, anger, greed, infatuation etc. they are notruling me. I am also free frompanchkleshas like ignorance, pride, passion, resentment and abhini- vesh. I am a part of anandmayay, prakashmayay, shantimayay, paramsukhmayay, triguntatit, bahawatit (above emotions),Shuddhsatva. I Amritputra. Justlike a single drop of water is incom-plete, similarly, I cannot live with-out the ocean of contentment.i. e.The almighty God. He is the creatorof life, vitality, strength, speed, light, peace, happiness and all thatis available to us. He has provided

us strength, birth, age body andmind and all that which is neces-sary to lead a smooth life. Lord'speace and prosperity are aroundme. Not even for a second, the ulti-mate protector dissociates from me.I am always in the Lord and theLord is always in me. This is calledTadatamya Bhava. Lord will alwaysbless us with enjoyment forever. Ifwe still do not enjoy it, then it's ourown fault.

Along with Yoga, there shall bePranayama, Satsanga, self explora-tion teachings and discussion aboutnation building. It will create ahealthy village across the country.

Everyone from Gandhi to Tilak,Gokhale, Shahide-azam BhagatSingh Azad and Bismil believedthat Indias freedom will be com-pleted only when millions of its vil-lages become independent andpowerful. By adopting the path ofSwadeshi (Indigenous), we canmake our country powerful.

We have planned to make everyvillage an ideal at primary level byMay-June this year.

We shall take it to next level bythe end of this year. Our briefdescription of Model VillageScheme is as follows:

    Organised Villagesthrough Membershipcampaign.

We cannot achieve a big targetwithout being organised.

Bharat Swabhiman which aimsto change the system has a plan tounite all village and cities through amembership campaign. Wholenation is under the campaign. Byorganising them, we want to get ridof diseases and corruption. In placeof these healthy, righteous andpowerful Bharat Nirman will comeinto existence. Thats our goal.

    [3]

    Herb Gardens

Knowledge of indigenous medi-cines our aim to have herbs likegiloy, tulsi, aloe vera, amla, neem, pattharachata, aswagandha inhouses, courtyards, farmlands, schools, colleges and temples etc.Hence people will come to knowabout their properties and usage. We want this affordable, simple, compact and powerful system toget publicity so that people shouldhave the benefits of the same.

    [04]

Toxin-free agricultureUse of dangerous chemical fertilis-ers and pesticide-free domestic fer-tilisers like indigenous fertilisersand animal gobar or urine along with hybrid seed will make ourfarmers healthy and prosperous. Then the real dream of India will beachieved. Today, nearly Rs 7 trillionis spent over medicines to cure can-cer, tuberculosis, asthma, sugar andBP, which are majorly caused by the

use of pesticides. Peasants spendaround 80 % on fertilisers and pes-ticides. Farmers are committingsuicide due to high cost and low yield phenomenon. We are slowlybeing forced towards diseasescaused by toxins and pesticides. Weare being pushed into a slow death. With indigenous agriculture, we will have low-cost yields first andthen will gradually have low-costand high yields. We will providereasonable organic products to themarkets.

    [05]

PlantationTrees are our lifeguards. Our sur-vival and protection against calami-ties, including drought, floods, fierce heat other severe problems -

could only be tackled with planta-tion of trees and conversation ofenvironment. We have ruthlesslycut trees around villages and for-ests. As a result, we are at presentfacing problems like lack of rainfallpattern and climate change. Gold, silver, luxury cars and high-risebuildings are those things which wecan buy any moment in the name ofdevelopment and luxury. But thetrees on which our based grow in atleast 15 to 20 years. So, lets make aresolution to sow a plant on everyauspicious occasion like birthday, wedding anniversary and holy festi- vals. Gift medicinal plants andherbs like neem, arjuna, amla, giloyand basil to your family and friendson every joyous occasions. This willsave our future generations andIndia will have a bright future.

    Water Management

Conservation of rainwater andselection of scientific methods tosow crop will help. For example,

in areas with lower water levels, one can avoid sowing sugarcaneand other paddy crops. With thehelp of Shramdan and mutual coop-eration, we will be able to ensurethat water for villages and water forirrigation purposes can be utilisedfor it only. We will have to ensurethat methods of rainwater harvest-ing schemes are utilised properly,so that descending water level canbe balanced. For this, we need indi- vidual and collective efforts.Availability of per capita water is ondecline and if we will not addressthis then conflicts will arise.

    [07]

Village ParliamentTruth can only be achieved in the villages, if Gram Sabha takes alldecisions for the betterment of vil-lages and the correct decisions areimplemented with full transparencyby Gram Panchayat. This will bringtrue Swarajaya in villages with thehelp of developmental work. In

fact, our villages will be corruption-free. And the dream to establish apowerful India can be achieved with the support of Gramodayaand Rashtroday.

    [08]

Village SanitationBoth hygiene and health go hand inhand and absence of any other fac-tor can lead to the loss of total wellbeing. Every house, street and vil-lage can be healthy and 99 per cent

disease free, if we follow sanitationon regular basis and will be able toachieve complete wellness and pros-perity and peace. Moreover, our vil-lages will prosper and opportunities will flow in the form of education, develpoment and employment. Thiswill also bring in new revolution andmigration issue will also be resolved. We will ensure that our farmers, poor labourers and craftsmen alsoget same status as doctors and engi-neers both in terms of work andeconomy.

    [09]

Disease and addiction-freevillageThrough regular Yoga, diseases canbe eradicated completely and peo-

ple will be able to lead a pious andhealthy life. There shall be no spacefor addiction and other internal weaknesses. For de-addiction, vil-lagers should quit alcohol, tobaccoand other addictions. Then only we will be able to restore healthy andprosperous villages.

    [10]

Independent Villages byswadeshiForeign merchandises, medicines, food, fertilisers and oils are costing15 to 20 lakh crore per year. We willhave to take the path of swadeshi tosave money, resources and cultureof India and adapt self sustainableapproach to meet our requirements. With the help of swadeshi, India willsoon become a great economicpower of the world. We shall opposeforeign products and encourage useof village made products to be usedaroud the same. Therefore, we willbe able to make each village anddistrict free from foreign products.

    11]

Qualitative improvementin educationMahatma Gandhi believed that onlyknowledge of letters is not a com-plete education, but it is a part of it.Culture should be a part of educa-tion. For dhyana chanting of Om(keeping the meaning in mind) isthe best way for meditation. Shapeof God's eyebrow, eye, nasal, labial, ears, heart and chest all are in theshape of Oankar. The nodules(body) and the entire Universe isOankarmay. So by chanting Om,the Seeker Sarwantryami, ubiqui-tous, Sachchidanand, experiencesthe Divine within himself, he feelsthat everywhere and in the processbecomes part of that Divyaswroop. The Omkara is not a person or spe-cial shape, but it is a divine powerthat is operating entire universe. Asin case of our body which performsevery possible duty but our soul isinvisible. Everything is done accord-ing to soul which is invisible.Similarly, entire universe is operat-ed by the divine Omkar, though theexternal eyes he is not visible.Along with Pranab one can enchantgreat Gayatri Mantra during medi-

tation keeping its meaning inthe mind.

    [8]

Udgeeth (Om) is worshiped by con-centrating on breathing process. All senses are imperfect becauseeyes sees both good as well as evil.Ear listens both gentle - abusive, nose smell everything, tongue eatsall types of food, speech is also per- verted, in the mind all sort ofthoughts do come. Nothing is per-fect but Prana is Nirvikar, it is com-

plete and pure. So to meet NirvikarBrahma we should go to the shelterof pureness prana to worshipUdgeeth. So, whenever you gettime, be seated and with everyexhale inhale do witness thealmighty and be focused on Omkar. While inhaling and exhaling, thespeed should so microscopic thatone should not hear self-breathingsound. If a cotton is placed in frontof ones nose it shall not move. Trythat in a minute you exhale andinhale only once. So try look up infor your respiration. Initially, youwill fell your breathing on the frontof your nose. Gradually you willfeel deep breathing. Thus for sometime breathing with the sense of watcher (The witness) and chant-ing Omkar you will automaticallytouch the height of meditation. This

is called sahaj yoga for you. Whilemeditating, a seeker unifies himselfwith nature and divine and becomessachchidanand. He enjoys theunique divine world and reachesthe stage of samadhi. Any practitio-ner should go to bed concentratingin the above said manner. By doingso, his sleep will also become Yogmayi. In his entire life of theseeker will become Yogmayi.

    [9]

Thus each Mumukshoo(one whocraves for Moksha) should chant, meditate and worship for at least anhour a day. By doing this, he getsrelief from all types of sorrows. Weshall always remember that thechief aim of our life should be self-exploration and visualisation of thealmighty. All remaining tasksand goals are secondary. Accordingto a Sage of the Upanishad, if weare not marching on this very paththen Mahti Vinshti is inevitable. So yoga and meditation are require-

    ment of our lives.

you ever ask an educated personto buy the 'remains of ground-

Then one day he will goto the market and buy Boost, Horlicks,Complan or Proteinex and drink it bymixing in the milk. He will feelrefreshed and energetic after drink-ing it, unaware of the fact that allthese health supplements are ground-nut roughage and not power tonics. This can happen with anybody. Thepropaganda machinery is befoolingus by through misleading advertise-ments.

On television we see that Boost is thereason of Sachin Tendulkar's energyto play cricket. While on July 9, 1995, when Wimbledon finals were beingplayed in London, Pete Sampras waseating a banana. He draws his energyfrom a banana only. It requires a lotof energy and power to throw a ballat 200 kmph or more in a particulardirection. Players like Boris Beckerand Pete Sampras draw such energyonly from bananas. Then does Boost

supply more energy or a banana?

According to an estimate, Indiansannually spent Rs 2,950 crore onhealth tonics and health foods worthmore than Rs 150 crore are soldevery year. We do not need thesehealth tonics or health foods at all. 77per cent of our countrys populationlives below poverty line. For a person who cannot manage a proper mealfor himself and his family, a doctorprescribing a health food is a crime initself. Those who can afford a bal-

openly violate the Indianlaws. The Indian govern-

ment on June 15, 1988, issued a spcial gazette notification 11018/1/88

DMSPFA. Under this notification, medicines made from drugs likeestrogen-progesterone andChloramphenicol-streptomycin werecompletely banned. But these medi-cines are still being sold in the mar-ket by the multinational companies. All such medicines have ill-effects owomen especially. If consumed bypregnant women, a handicappedchild can be born. These drugs alsodisturb their menstrual cycle. Thesedangerous medicines are sold underthe names of EPFort, Menstrogenforte, Orsechron forte and Oglutin.

Similarly, on July 23, 1983, theCentral government issued a gazettenotification 11014/2/83 DMSPFAunder which 27 types of basic drugswere banned. But still some of themare still available in the market. Theare sold under the names AnalgesicAchromycin, Terramycin, DecabolenHistapred, Paracort, Perodran etc.

On Dec 26, 1990 and in 1991, theordinances issued by the Central gov

But some of them are stillbeing sold under the name of ButaProxyvon, Carbuterol, Balagesic,Veganin, Fortegesic, Montorip,Dicaris, Zefral, Lupihist, Tixilis,Corex, Tribusin and Dristran. Thesecompanies have ridiculed the law.Even the government has closed itseyes to the matter. Many dangerousscams are being operated in pharmaceutical industry under the aegis ofgovernment and bureaucracy.

Even after putting legal restrictions as directedby the government, some medicines are stillbeing sold in the market and the governmentstaff has become a mute spectator.

Intestinesdigest the unnecessary drugs and itcomes out in the form of urine. Youspent the money; stomach, liver andkidneys worked harder but yougained nothing. In fact, companiesbenefitted. The invigorating tonicsthat do not cost more than Rs 20 aresold from Rs 40 to Rs 200.

About 90 per cent of the Indianpharmaceutical industry has beencaptured by foreign multinationalcompanies. Of the 84,000 medicinespresent in the market, only 117 are ofour use. The rest are useless. Fromthese useless drugs, the MNCs are

making 20,00 per cent profit. Thesame drug is being sold in the marketunder 40 different names. 90 per centof such tonics have no utility in ourlives, instead they have ill-effects onour body.

These companies are selling thosedrugs in our country that have alreadybeen banned and declared poison-ous. Some drugs that have been pro-hibited for long in other countries arebeing sold indiscriminately in India. When the pharmaceutical companiessensed that developed countries arebanning their toxic and lethal drugsthen suddenly they shifted the focustoward poor and developing coun-tries. The companies took the advan-tage and opened more factories at will. In these nations legal restric-tions are nothing but paper tiger. TheMNCs keep carrying out someresearch in India or other developedcountries, which increases the threatof chronic diseases.

Organisation of PharmaceuticalProducers of India that represents

big MNCs, has warned that if thegovernment does not change its poli-cies, then in the coming years drugslike Rifampicin, Paracetamol,Chloramphenicol, Ethambutol, andTetracycline will disappear from themarket. The question regarding the intakeamount of vegetable and fruit juiceis asked by many people. Somepeople drink juices at home andsome drink them at the juice cor-ners in the market so as to avoidthe effort of peeling, cutting andextracting the juice from fruits andvegetables. As far as health is con-cerned, one should avoid them asthey are not hygienic and clean. Some juice vendors use stale fruitsand vegetables to earn more profit. We should take proper care whiledrinking juices from outside. Whenthe fruits and vegetables are cutand kept for long time, they notonly lose their nutrition but alsoform harmful germs as with more

time chemical composition chang-es. Juice also starts reacting chemi-cally when kept in steel utensils, also making them poisonous. So,one should consume juices immedi-ately after extracting them.

When the salad consisting ofonion, carrot, radish, cucumber andlemon kept in a steel utensil is con-sumed 30-40 minutes after beingcut, it tastes little bitter. This is dueto chemical reaction between lemonjuice and steel. Even if the fruit a nd vegetable juices are refrigerated

and consumed later, they lose theirquality and harm t he body.

Sugarcane juice should be con-sumed immediately as it starts los-ing its nutritious value.

Before extracting juices, themixer or the juicer should becleaned thoroughly. And should bewashed after the use. If the mixer/ juicer is used again without clean-ing, it starts reacting chemically. And the chemicals get mixed withthe juice and harm the body.

Packed juices have also become very popular these days.Preservatives are mixed to keepthem safe. Tetra juice packs arepacked at high temperaturesbecause of which they lose theirvitamins and nutritious value.

The carotene is found in theform of Vitamin-A in fruits and veg-etables. According to the scientists,if any extract is kept for some timethen the carotene loses its valueafter being in contact with the air.Carrot loses its Vitamin A in 15-20minutes after it is cut into pieces.Orange, lemon and other citrusfruits also lose their vitamins in20-25 minutes after they have beencut into pieces.

Fruits and vegetables should bewashed properly as chemicals andpesticides are sprinkled on them.On grapes and mangoes, carbide isused in the ripening process.

If you suffer from anemia, youshould consume fruits that help informing blood. Iron helps in bloodformation and pomegranate, orang-es, tomatoes and others are suchfruits.

Vegetables and fruits consumedin the form of salad helps in consti-pation. Never eat fruits and vegeta-bles on empty stomach.

Many people are unsure of the juice intake amount. Adding rocksalt, black pepper and lemon makesthem more tasty. 200 grams juice isenough for a healthy body.

A pregnant lady should consultthe doctor before taking juice.Infants can take 2-3 spoon, and 150grams of juice is enough for 10-12years old children. Avoid drinkingjuice at night, especially in winter.

is a nutritious diet. It is equally suitable for chil-

dren, young and the old people. But what is itthat makes Rasahaar beneficialt for weak and sick people?Experts say that when we drink the juices of fruits and vegetables, then our digestive system absorbs 95 per cent of the nutrients. Toget rid of weakness, doctors also advise fruits and vegetable juice. There is no doubt that with little intake of vegetable and fruit juiceone can attain nutritions and energy to fight diseases.

    STAYHEALTHYBY RASAHAAR

It is better todrink juice halfan hour afterthe lunch. Sipit slowly...

It helps in theformation ofsaliva andactivates salivaryglands. Juiceafter in contact

with the salivahelps in thedigestion ofsugar. That is

    why fruit juicesare easilydigestible.

word Yoga has appeared umpteen times in our scrip-tures such as the Gita, Vedas, and Puranas. Yoga has

been an integral part of Indian philosophy, and is among the sixmost important of all Indian philosophies. Yogashastra appeared200 years before Christ, with Maharshi Patanjali being creditedfor the development of Yogsadhna.

    IMPACTOFYOGAON HUMAN BODY

From self realisation and medita-tion to real life work, the impor-tance of yoga and its wider appli-cations have been described indetail in our Sastras. MaharshiPatanjali terms yoga as ChitvritiNirodha' (Suppression of Chitvriti).

Praman, Viparyaya, Vikalp, Nidraand Smruti are five Vritiyas thatare in sync with Mana through thepractice of Vairagya. When Manais in total sync with the soul, one issaid to be in the state of yoga.

Maharshi Vyas considers yogato be synonymous with meditation. We can surmise that by meditatingand having complete control overourselves, in order for the soul tomeet God (when Atma meetsParmatma) is called yoga.

Swami RamdevMaharaj hasfreed people ofall castes, communities anreligions fromdiseases througeight packagesof yoga and yo

Yoga is where the soul meetsthe centre of our self-consciousness(swachetna) and transcendentalconsciousness (parachetna), lead-ing to the ultimate consciousness -God. When man is immersed insamyakbodha and his heart is filledwith vairagyabhav, he surpassesall kinds of ephemeral desires andcomes in contact of Aatmsatta. There are five states of Chitta -kschipt, murha, vikshipt, ekagraand nirudh. Meditation is not possi-ble in the first three stages.

Types of YogaIn Dattatrya Yogshasta and YograjUpniasad, four types of yoga havebeen described. These areMantrayoga, Layayoga, Hathyoga, and Rajyoga.

[1]Mantrayoga: Chanting thematrakadiyukta mantra for 12 years, helps you attain siddhi likethe anima stage.

    [2]

Layayoga: Remembering God dur-ing daily work.

    [3]

Hathyoga: To increase concentra-tion power of mana through vari-ous mudra, asnas and pranayam.

    [4]

Rajyoga: Cleansening the psychethrough the practice of Yama-Niyamadi.

Maharshi Patanjali has concen-trated on Astang Yoga, describingit in his yogasutras.

Meaning of yoga is realisa-tion of self-consciousness

    Yoga aims at developing our

inner strength to reach God andattain enlightenment. Indian saintshave described various methods inthis process. Astangyoga helpsdevelop our hidden strength. Yogamakes our nervous system strong, which improves our blood circula-tion immensely.

Yogasan helps in completedevelopment of body, mind andspirit. It helps us in attainging theultimate consciousness and experi-encing the joy of completeness.

'Kalp' means 'specific yog', 'spe-cific plan' and to discipline the bodythrough specific activities. In mod-ern society, Kayakalp is neededmost as the society is in the throesof diseases like cancer, AIDS, hyper-tension, diabetes, heart disease. Thebody has become a temple of dis-eases. The camels gheeused in Rajasthan helps in remov-ing phlegm, fights worms and poi-son, tackles leprosy and abdominaldisorders and tumour. The gheeextracted from mountain sheep islight by nature. It helps in all kindsof diseases and is beneficial in bonegrowth, stones, sugar, Vataa andacidity problems. The ghee of mareis also light. It is a toxin destroyer, and is beneficial in eye diseasesand inflammation. The gheeextracted from colostrum (firstmilk) is equal to nectar and is ben-eficial for eyes, cough, Vataa andblood related disorders.

Acharya Bhav Mishra says thatghee is used in our food, for liba-tion, hard work, xanthopsia andcuring eye diseases.

Acharya Charaka says that gheecures panacea, epilepsy, fatigue, tuberculosis and artificial poisons. It pacifies fever, yonishool, karna-shool and shirashool.

Acharya Bhavprakash says thatghee that is being stored for oneyear destroys three kinds of disor-ders. It gives relief in hysteria, epilepsy and improves vision defect. As the time passes, ghee becomesold and the older it is, the better isthe result. Its properties becomeexcellent.

Acharya Charaka says, the gheethat is stored for 10 years, smellsheavily and is called puran ghee. After 10 years, it becomes prapuran which gives excellent result. It isbeneficial in hysteria, epilepsy andfatigue. It gives best result whenrubbed at the temples.

    Kaviraj Lolimbraj says that the

ghee is beneficial in skin disorders. If used after being washed in cold water for thousand times, itprovides relief in burning or inflam-mation.

Ghee should not be consumedby infants and kids. Old peopleshould not use it when sufferingfrom any cough related disease,Tuberculosis (particularly at thelast stage) or alcoholism. It is alsonot to be used when suffering fromfever, low energy or any heart-relat-ed disease.

Acharya Charaka says that ghee isbest among melted butter, oil, andother oils as it provides more ener-gy, and is beneficial. Pure ghee

never leaves its properties andalso adapt to other good quali-

ties. When the melted ghee istreated with drugs likeChitrak, then it becomes hotbut doesn't leave its qualities.

Kayakalp gives a miraculous effect. There are two types of methods touse this therapy. (1) Kuti Praveshik(indoor) and (2) Vattapik (outdoor). In this fast life, the first method hasbecome impractical.

The first task is to choose aneligible person for rejuvenation. That person should be devoid ofmental and physical problems. Heshould be either young or middle-aged. Kayakalp should not be prac-ticed at an early or old age. Here weshall discuss about outdoor meth-ods that can be practiced easily. This method is easily accessibleand can be adopted in synchronisa-tion with our daily routine. But it isnecessary that the person is morallygood behaved, i.e. he must followthe chemistry of ethics. While fol-lowing 'ethics chemistry,' one has toconsume some chemicals for lon-gevity, sound memory and intelli-gence. The person also becomesphysically smart and young.

Kayakalp is considered veryuseful and can be practiced in anyseason. When a person becomesphysically weak in middle-age, hissexual dysfunction can be cured byusing this practice. His spermcount, neurological condition andstaying power also improves. Forthe same, high quality drugs areavailable at Patanjali YogpeethsDivya Pharmacy. Regular practiceof Pranayama and eating nutritiousdiet, including dates, walnuts, almonds, milk and fruits also help.
