Patañjali, the autor of the classical YOGA SUTRA divides the practice of yoga into several stages:
. Yama, or restraint from vice
Niyama, or observance of purity and virtue, lay the moral foundation for practice and remove the disturbance of uncontrolled desires.
Asana, or posture, and pranayama, or breath control, calm the physical bod.
Pratyahara, or withdrawal of the senses, detaches the mind from the external world.
Dharana, or concentration,meditation
Samadhi pure state of contemplation and understanding
Patanjali, the autor of the classical YOGA SUTRA, describes several levels in the practice of yoga:
Yoga pathsHatha yoga
"Ha" means Pingala Nadi (sun principle) or right nostril and "tha" means Ida nadi, (moon principle) or left nostril. Nadi means psychic passage of energy which can be compared with nerves in physical body. Hatha means balance of Ida and Pingala Nadis, or balancing of mental energy of Ida and Vital / physical energy of Pingala Nadi.
Bhakti
That is a Yoga of devotion or complete faith. This faith is generally in the God or supreme consciousness in any of the forms.Bhakti yoga
Kundalini yoga
This system of Yoga is concerned with awakening of the psychic centers or chakras, which exists in every individual.
Karma yoga
Karma Yoga is a path of devotion to the work. One looses his identity while working, only selfless work remains.
