Who Is Your YMCA Family?

Pictured opposite page: James B. Hartough and Barry M. Taylor

Dear Friends:If you go to the Patrick Henry Family YMCA at 10 a.m. on a Saturday, you’ll be sure to find a group of mostly women doing water aerobics in the pool. They talk about current events, sing, and warmly welcome any newcomers to the class. They’ve been doing this for years and they form what we call a YMCA family.

Indeed, “families” like these are the core of the YMCA. For 153 years, the YMCA of Greater Richmond has opened its doors to generations of families who believe in the YMCA’s mission: to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.

Just as a parent takes pride in announcing that their child made the football team, we revel in sharing how the YMCA is fulfilling its mission. So, let us share a few YMCA highlights for 2006:

More than 132,000 individuals, children and families participated in YMCA programs and services such as aquatics, childcare, camp, youth sports, leadership development and wellness. We were voted “Best Community/Rec Center” by Richmond Magazine readers. Generous friends and members gave $4,096,559, allowing the YMCA of Greater Richmond to fulfill its mission. More than 3,000 members of the general public participated in YMCA Wellness Week, YMCA Waterpalooza and YMCA Move it! Richmond, a series of free community service events designed to help others take a first step toward a healthier lifestyle. Chief Rodney Monroe and 60 Richmond police officers escorted little shoppers to Target for a YMCA Bright Beginnings Shop with a Cop experience. YMCA Camp Thunderbird celebrated 40 years of community service. In response to the aftermath of tropical storm Ernesto, we partnered with Philip Morris USA to respond to the desperate needs of the Battery Park children and community. We launched online registration, making membership and program registration even more convenient. As a member and supporter of the YMCA of Greater Richmond, we are blessed with an extended family that enriches life in so many ways. We thank you for all you do.

Sincerely,

James B. Hartough, Board Chairman Barry M. Taylor, President & CEO

“My father was a lawyer who went to the YMCA every day. He liked to jog, but what he really enjoyed was the Y’s sense of community. There he made friends with people from all walks of life, and in the locker room they’d share one joke after another. I always thought he was blessed with three families: our immediate family, his law-firm family and his YMCA family!

“Dad’s passion for the Y stuck with me, and today I chair the 1854 Society Committee. We’re a network of ‘family helping family’ who’ve invested in the YMCA’s future through planned giving. We all know and respect each other, so we look forward to time together – like during our 1854

1854 SocietyVision 2010:Commitment to Family

The family is the core building block of society. The YMCA

will provide programs and services that allow

families to thrive.

Society family picnic every June. It’s a delightful tradition where children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren gather to celebrate their families’ love and support of the YMCA. From the pony rides to the crafts and magician, there’s entertainment and fun for all ages.

“Members of the 1854 Society Committee share wonderful legacies from generation to generation … just as Dad’s love of the YMCA remains his special legacy to me.”

―–Newnie Rogers,

YMCA Board Member

“Friends ask why we spend so much time at the YMCA – it’s because we love it! Our weekly Leaders Club meeting is a really fun get-together where pre-teens and teens play games and chill with each other. We learn the Y’s history and core values in fun ways. There’s training for YMCA programs, like childcare, refereeing and swimming. The best part is the YMCA Blue Ridge Leadership School. Everyone has to qualify to go – pass written and fitness tests, plus volunteer 100 hours. It’s worth it, though, because we’re like this big family of friends.

YMCA Teen Leaders ClubVision 2010:Youth & Teen Development

The YMCA will provide adult role models that help youth

and teens find their place in a constructive group, develop

self-worth, make informed choices, become ethical persons and believe in a

promising future.

Page 7: YMCA Annual Report 2006

YMCA Teen Leaders Club“YMCA Leaders are totally equipped for life. We learn work ethics and responsibility, how to make friends and be a friend. Even the little kids are always glad to see us. They really look up to us — like we’re their ‘second family.’

“YMCA Teen Leaders Club isn’t something we have to do; it’s something we want to do!”

Lunchtime Racquetballers“We’re a group of guys with different ages, backgrounds and careers — yet we see each other practically every day. That’s because we have one thing in common: racquetball!

“Whenever we can, we meet at the Downtown YMCA during lunch. There’s always a group waiting and ready to play, so we’re guaranteed a good game … and a good time. And this is nothing new. These ‘pick-up’ games have been going on for years and years. They’ve become a Richmond ‘lunchtime tradition.’

Vision 2010:Healthy Lifestyles

Modern society faces increasing health challenges. The YMCA

will lead wellness initiatives through membership,

programs and advocacy.

“Don’t misunderstand: competition’s fierce on the court. But that changes once the game ends. Sometimes we’ll meet for a meal or have a ‘rivah’ social with our wives and kids. And if one of us gets hurt or hospitalized, we’re right there for them.

“We’re like this family of friends – both on and off the courts. We all share a love of the game. And the exercise? Well, that’s just a bonus!”

YMCA After School Program

We’re the YMCA’s Blandford Eagle Steppers … and we’re ‘number one!’ You know why? Because we have rhythm, energy and precision. Last but not least, we have attitude – not just any attitude, the RIGHT attitude. That’s really important for competitions and why we’ve won lots of awards.

Vision 2010:Everyone Belongs

The YMCA of Greater Richmond recognizes

and celebrates the growing diversity of our community. At the YMCA, everyone belongs.

“Clap your hands, stomp your feet, Get down with the B.E.S. beat…

Page 11: YMCA Annual Report 2006

YMCA After School Program“We practice together at the YMCA every day before and after school, so it’s like we’re a family. Sure, we work hard, but we play hard, too. After we finish our homework, we play games like ‘Go, Fish!’ Sometimes we get to order pizza. And at the end of the year, we even go as a group to Kings Dominion!

“There’s so much that we learn from the folks at the YMCA. Besides dance steps, we learn about confidence and discipline. The YMCA is the best friend that we have.”

— The Award-Winning YMCA Blandford Elementary School Steppers

Midlothian Family YMCA Capital CampaignTogether Toward Tomorrow

The neighborhood has changed but the desire remains the same: to raise children in safety and teach them great values. The Midlothian Family YMCA is currently raising funds to expand their facility to meet critical needs in this fast-growing community. It takes a special friend to catch the vision and make an early investment. We gratefully acknowledge these generous individuals whose gifts will help us move together toward tomorrow at the Midlothian Family YMCA.
