LOCATION & BACKGROUND: Indramayu, West Java (4 – 5 hours from Jakarta • Permissive view of girls (early

marriage, girls do not need a high school, girls is asset)

• Most of the girls only graduated from elementary school

• Few marketable skills • Few Birth Registration • Poverty

Strategy: • Mobilize local support for the

prevention of child trafficking especially for sexual exploitation

• Improving school curricula and children’s access to education, as well as awareness raising

PREVENTION ON CHILD TRAFFICKING PROGRAM (awarded UN GEI in 2006)

1. Establishing youth center or Sanggar

2. Socialization to community, schools and local government

3. Activity based on category of children :

• Children in school: scholarship and motivation not to drop out

• Drop out children: preparation education to go back to school or to attend vocational training

• Trafficked children: rehabilitation and reintegration (110 children go back home and pursue education)

ACTIVITIES of the youth center:

• Community radio – managed by children in collaboration with local radio station .

• Preparatory or Catch up education

• Outreach children by mobile library

• Vocational training like sewing in collaboration with IGTC

• Advocacy by children as agent of change: video diary (interview peers, parents, teachers, etc.)

• Winning video program competition in South Korea

Since 2004, more than 3,000 children access to the center 1. Children motivated to continue their

education (increasing number of enrolment) and become role model and agent of change of the program

2. Through Community Radio, children become broadcasters, encouraging their peers to go to school

3. Through video diary, children advocate parents and community to support education of their children rather than arranged early marriage

Indonesia has ratified ILO conventions (138 and 182), but still hard in the implementation, due to:

• Lack of education of community (HDI 108/169 – UNDP 2010)

• Lack of employment and activities for youths • Limited resources and development in the sending

areas • Lack of knowledge about human/child trafficking • Lack of coordination among community, government

and NGOs • Lack of NGOs working with community in the areas

• Replicate this good practice in other sending areas

• Support for education, such as: Scholarship, story books for children, training for children, LCD Projector, laptop, internet, handy cam, etc

• Community radio equipment

• Teaching children (voluntary-based)

• Collaborate with CSR program of companies

• Establish inter-regional networking sender

• Capacity building for social worker
