If you are a tenant who has claimed Universal Credit and need some help with managing your money, our Universal Credit specialists can provide personal budgeting support.
How we can help you?Our personal budgeting support service will help you to manage your money better by:
• Completing a monthly budget with you to help you manage your spending
• Showing you how to complete an accurate monthly budget by yourself
• Discussing what you should do to maintain your budgeting plan• Checking whether you can maximise your income• Helping you apply for grant payments if you are eligible for any
schemes• Checking whether you can reduce your spending on any of your bills• Exploring ways of cutting your spending on non-essential items • Helping you understand which bills are priority and why • Advising you how to open and run a bank account • Talking to you about the importance of saving• Talking to you about borrowing money at affordable rates• Giving you handy tips and advice on where else you can get support
The specialists will provide budgeting support and debt advice to tenants who have been referred to us.We aim to help you manage your money and pay your bills on time as you move from your old benefits on to Universal Credit. We can also assess whether you may need your money paid in an alternative way to help you manage this change.
We can meet you in person at your Housing Services Office or we can talk over the phone. In certain circumstances a home visit may be offered. It is important that you attend your appointment or contact us if you need to cancel or re-arrange. We can return your calls if you have little credit on your phone.
What information do you need to have for your appointment? The more we know about your fi nances, the more we can do to help. Please bring the following information to your appointment or have it handy when we phone you:Proof of your income. It can be any of the following:
• Recent letters from benefi ts agencies • Recent payslips, bank statements• Pension/Maintenance statements• Recent account statements (if you’re self-employed)
Information about your bills. Check your bills to see how much you spend on your gas, electric, water, telephone, broadband and other expenses.If you are not sure how much you are spending on your food, clothing and other outgoings, please try to keep a diary of your outgoings as we need to know about your spending habits. If you have debts please have the information handy so you can tell us about them. Depending on your need we will either off er you support over thephone, online information or face to face appointments.
