Kids’ rooms are oten a chaos o clothing, colors andcrat items. Parents strive to keep some sense o order in

their little ones’ rooms, oten experiencing aggravationwhen youngsters don’t ollow cleanup directions. One wayto reduce the struggle, and give kids an organized, cleanliving space where they can play in peace, is to create a neworganizing plan or the room’s biggest opportunity ororder: the closet.

Robert Guerin, owner o the proessional closet designcompany Hang It Up Closets, says that “when a childgrows up in an organized, neat room, good skills are devel-oped or later in lie.”

As kids learn their new organizing system, they’re alsolearning their colors, matching items and thinking aboutitem unction lessons that may help them in school andstick with them to create a oundation o order in theiradult lives. Right now, their belongings will nd easilyaccessed storage spots and bins in that closet, getting all o the clutter o the foor, desks and dressers. Kids will alsoget pride o accomplishment when they clean their roomsmore easily and enjoy the perk o praise rom you.

A key to organizing kids’ closets is ormulating a planthat can be easily and inexpensively adjusted as they grow.

“There’s a big dierence between baby hangers, kids’ toyand a teenager’s more grown-up collections,” says GuerinYou need “closets designed to grow and adjust or yourchild’s changing needs.”

At the start, decide i you want to hire a proessionalcloset organizer to construct the ideal layout o barsor hanging clothes, foor-to-ceiling cubbies and highershelving eatures. An expert knows exactly how to take asmall closet and maximize the storage space within, usingperectly measured shelves, bins and other eatures. Whentwo or more children are sharing one closet, the expert cacreate sectors or each.

Or you might wish to tackle your closet organizing plaon your own, using these ve top suggestions:

1. Start by pulling everything out. Haveour bins nearby, marked “Current,” “Donate,” “Hand-Me-Downs” and “Trash.”

“Current” is or clothing, shoes, accessories, toys andother items the child uses now. “Donate” is or items to bdonated to a charity. “Hand-Me-Downs” is or outgrownitems that can be oered to siblings or riends’ children. And, o course, trash is or ripped, stained and otherwiseunwearable items, broken toys, and other discardables. Iitems can be recycled, have a bin or those, as well.

With an entirely empty space beore you, and items intheir bins, thoroughly clean the closet walls, ceilings andoor, and consider painting the closet interior. Kids canhelp choose their desired color, and stencils and wall clingscan add a un, decorative air to parts o the wall visiblebeneath hanging clothes or on the side walls.

 2. Install double bars for kids’ clothes, set low enough or your child to be able to hang his or her

own clothing. Since kids’ clothing is short and thin, hangone rod higher and urther back in the closet, with thesecond rod lower and toward the ront. Kids can then hangup their clothes with more space between each item, oreasier viewing or your older child can claim the back bar, while your smaller child gets the ront bar. Spring tensionrods can be used or narrow closets, so you don’t need todrill holes and screw in the bars. As kids age, the tensionbars can be raised to the heights needed.

Make hanging up clothing easier and more un or kidsby investing in colorul plastic hangers. As a rainy dayproject, kids can afx small stickers o their choice to thecenter point o the hanger just below the hook. This giveskids ownership o their hanger collection, which may

inspire better use o them.3. set colorful fabric bins on the closet

floor, such as bright pinks or apple greens, with pictureson the ront or pre-readers or large letter identifcationlabels or older kids. These labels identiy what’s to beplaced in these lidless bins. Laundry is more easily depos-ited, especially when you teach kids to stand a ew eetaway and score “baskets” with their dirty socks and shirts.Another bin might be or stued animals, giving belovedteddy bear collections a cozy home “where they can all betogether.” When storage bins have lids, kids are less likelyto take the extra step o pulling out the bin, opening asnap top and closing it again. The open-top o a abric bininspires more use.

4. Plan tall enough shelves in built-ins. Meryl Starr, proessional organizer and author o “TheOrganizing Workbook,” suggests shelving heights thatallow or a 6- to 12-inch pile o olded clothes to still haveroom on top or airier storage that cuts down on any moldor mildew. When cubbies or shelves have room on top, it’seasier or kids to retrieve the shirt they want without theentire pile o shirts alling to the oor (and staying there).

5. Use hanging organizers for smalleritems. A hanging abric shoe rack can be used or shoesand also or kids’ little purses and dress-up items like ti-aras. A hanging travel organizer intended or toiletries canhold jewelry, crat items, small toys and other tiny things.

When organizing bins and items are colorul and inviting, oering easy access, kids will use them. And on those dayswhen kids are resistant to stowing the teddy bears in theirbin, it’s very easy or you to deposit them there and call ita day.

Dear Pat: I was at a recent home show, and I saw a beau-tiul concrete replace surround. Is this something I couldinstall on a new replace I am having added to my livingroom, and is it good? - Debbie G.

Dear Debbie: A concrete surround can be installed onany replace. Concrete is one o the best materials to useor a replace surround. It is very durable, attractive andnonfammable. The design fexibility is virtually unlimitedbecause it is poured into a handmade mold that can be anyshape you desire.

People oten think o concrete as the dull gray stu usedor sidewalks and driveways, but nothing could be urtherrom the truth. Today concrete is also oten used or kitchen

countertops and other indoor suraces in a home wheredurability is a consideration.

Concrete is made basically o cement, aggregate (stones, gravel, sand, etc.) and water. By using a relatively ne aggre-gate, instead o gravel, which is commonly used or outdoorsidewalks, the nished concrete surace can be very smoothand uniorm.

Concrete can also be colored. The colorant is combinedwith the water when all o the concrete components aremixed together. By using this method, the color goes com-pletely through the concrete. I its surace does get marredor damaged in some way, it will be less apparent.

Installing a concrete replace surround is not usually ado-it-yoursel job, but i you design a simple one, give it a

try. The materials are inexpensive, so i you end up havingto call or proessional help, you will not have spent muchmoney.

Installing a concrete surround sounds as though it takes alot o strength to handle and install the heavy materials. Buta concrete surround is made in several smaller sections thatare mounted separately against the wall around the replaceopening. By installing it in several sections, each section canbe made with a dierent colorant or a unique appearance.

The rst step in making a concrete surround is to designit and make a ull-scale template. A simple rectangular shapethat is all on the same plain gives it a contemporary look. Amantel, made rom a smoothly nished wood beam, can beplaced between the upper two sections.

Once you have the template completed, place it againstthe replace to make sure it ts perectly. The concrete usedor the surround will be only about 3 inches thick. Note onthe back o the template any protrusions rom the wall thatwill interere with the placement o the concrete sections.

The nal orms, into which the concrete is poured, canbe made rom 3/4-inch-thick melamine. Melamine is strong

enough to hold its shape when lled with concrete, andit has a very smooth surace. This should yield a similarly

smooth surace to the nished concrete sections.Use a dry concrete mixture to ll the molds. For largerpieces, install reinorcing steel rods or mesh in the mold sothe concrete is orced through it. I you use mesh, make suthe holes are larger than the aggregate in the concrete. Steeties, which attach the sections to the wall, should also beplaced along the edge. Allow the concrete to set up or several days beore attempting to hang the sections on the wal

Your shower is your oasis. It may be where you beginyour day, waking up withthe scents o your shampooand body cleanser, but it’salso where you go ater atough workout or a dayo grueling yardwork tosoothe your muscles andget squeaky-clean again. It’s an easy installation project requiring justa screwdriver in most cases, and your new, arched rod canthen be dressed up with new, easy-slide metal ball or diskcurtain rings holding your new, luxe shower curtain. Whileyou’re at it, get a uy, curtain-matching bath rug to steponto ater your relaxing shower. Choose the color that says“spa” to you. It could be white or sage green a sot, neutral

Plumbing experts say that older turnstshower knobs can sometimes rust inside the connectiowhich can cost expensive leaks inside your wall down the level below. So changing out your shower knob fxturcould wind up saving you hundreds or thousands o dolladown the road. Nothing embodies a sense o luxury more than nicelyappointed bathrooms and powder rooms. This is one o the best improvements that can be done to any home, townhouse or condominium, as it adds both perceived andactual value.

Since the times o ancient Rome, baths have been a greatplace or cleanliness and also or establishing a connec-tion among body, mind and spirit. Baths were a reuge orone to go and think clearly and even, in some cultures, tonegotiate the ner points o a business deal. In our worldtoday, bathrooms are more private but, nonetheless, just as

important.Today’s bathrooms are not just unctional rooms o thehouse but also an extension o one’s living space, and theyare no longer clinical in design. Designs or these spaceshave gone in many directions, oten including saunas, hottubs, massage tables and even exercise areas. Gone aremany o the materials one used to expect in bathrooms: ce-ramic tile, traditional xtures, tones o mint green, cherrypink and sky blue (unless you are involved in a histori-cal restoration). These materials have been replaced withwarmer tiles, slates and marbles in a variety o incrediblecolors. Some have textures; others are laser-cut or intricatedesigns. Stones are mixed with glass and mirrors, and tilesand xtures that glow in the dark are available.

Some o the newer bathrooms rival the size o their en

suite bedrooms. Larger spaces are in avor over the typical5-by-7-oot bathrooms o yesteryear. Most homeown-ers are even willing to eliminate a spare room so thatthe square ootage can be used or their new bathroom.Lounging areas are de rigueur, and this means space or achaise or a pair o club chairs and an ottoman.

Fixtures such as toilets, lavs and tubs are available intraditional styles to t in with most conventional architec-tural styles. But some are also available in sleek versionsthat look as i they have been designed by aeronauticalengineers. Materials or xtures have evolved to includethe traditional porcelains and enameled irons, as well asnewer materials, such as resins and polyesters, that can eas-ily be molded into any shape while having the same sheenas earlier models.

Custom cabinetmakers can make bathroom urniture inany style to t your decor and liestyle. The one caveat isto use materials that are not aected by direct contact withwater or humidity. Today’s styles range rom foating wall-mounted cabinetry to urniture-like pieces that completelyconceal the xtures.

The whirlpool tub was the must-have 10 or 20 yearsago. Today high-end plumbing xtures are all the rage.

Most whirlpool tubs are being removed or lack o use anare being replaced with larger showers -- sometimes large

enough or two. These sybaritic showers eature multiplemassage sprays and rain showerheads and spa-like steamoptions. These eatures, once ound only at therapeuticclinics and spas, now are commonplace as people searchor antidotes to their hectic lives. Joseph Pubillones’ weekly column, “The Art of Design,” iavailable at creators.com.

An easy and inexpensive way to transorm a room is toinstall new and stylish shelving eatures. You don’t need tobuild a bookcase that extends the entire length o a wall. That kind o big, heavy eature lessens the oor space o your room and can make the space look smaller. What istrendy or interior design right now is the addition o indi-vidual shel pieces and ledges measuring two eet, three eetor our eet in length. A single attractive shelving piece givesramed artwork a chic place to rest and a small grouping o collectibles a tasteul home.

Here are the top trends in shel and ledge eatures thisyear, any o which would serve you well in an easy, get-it-done-in-no-time home decor project:

Ultra-narrow shelving. A ledge that extends just two

inches to our inches rom the wall maintains the open andairy space o a room, especially i it’s a small room. The newclass o ultra-narrow shelving eatures a groove or a rontlip that keeps rames, artwork and smaller items securelyin place. Consider installing a narrow single shel the entirelength o the wall, set high to run above the windows, orthe purpose o displaying artwork and collectibles the ulllength o the room. When painted the same color as thewall, the shel becomes an “invisible” architectural detailthat eliminates the “stuck to the wall” eect o a contrastingcolor.

Rustic wood ledges. Rustic is in this season, adding amore natural look and eel to a room. Unique woods such asbayur are ound in Pottery Barn collections and others, and

they oer that telltale aged look o rustic charm. One toptrend or rustic shelves and ledges is displaying not just onepiece, but two or three in dierent sizes, such as a 4-ooteron the bottom, a 3-ooter above that and a 2-ooter abovethat. The stacked eect maintains rustic comort whileproviding a unique visual air that’s ar more en vogue nowthan a trio o matching shel lengths.

Rattan. For an island-style eect, choose a wood shel that gives the eect o woven rattan. Pottery Barn eaturesan extra-thick mango wood shel with a chunkier appear-ance, giving the look and eel o a freplace mantle becauseit is six inches high, as opposed to those 4-inch-high displayshelves.

Marble top. A white marble embedded with naturalcrystalline sparkles, and colored veining provides a Euro-pean elegance or a bathroom, kitchen or white-decor livingroom. With a decorative black metal brace beneath, the e-ect is opulent, yet still sot enough or modern decor.

Beveled-edge shelves. The slight angles o a bevelededge add a more ormal look to a shelving piece and maycoordinate with other urniture pieces in the room. A style

to check out is Pottery Barn’s corbel decorative shel withbeveled edges, cutout corners and curved supports that, wi

its classic profle, adds to the architecture o a space. PotterBarn style consultants (whom you can contact via www.poterybarn.com or your own personal decor consultations, and even send them photos o your room) say, “Use them rows or with staggered shelves to showcase rames, booksand keepsakes.”

Moulded-base shelves. Shelving pieces with decoratimoulding on the bottom can coordinate with the design omoulding encircling the tops o your walls, or a polishedlook.

A-frame bookcases with matching shelves abovBed Bath & Beyond showcases a our-shel A-rame bookcase in a trendy espresso color made rom solid hardwoodand veneer or a contemporary, geometric pattern. Matchin

small ledges above or positioned on either side extend thewood shelving eect in an eye-pleasing upward directionto continue the display o similar items, such as books, collectibles and artwork.

Gallery-style display. The popular home decor siteCasa Sugar listed the gallery wall as one o the top designtrends or this year, encouraging the artistic collection o dierent colors and sizes o ramed art arranged randomlyon a wall. Narrow-edged shelving pieces or ledges can beused to create this same eect, and it may be your choice tdisplay matching rame colors and styles -- in dierent sizor visual eect -- to show o your kids’ artwork and otheprints or creations.

Mix shelving units with shelves and ledges. Indi-

vidual shel and ledge pieces can be hung between two buiin bookcases, such as above a bed and situated in the middor small ledges could be hung next to a bookshel to makeuse o staircase space and other awkward empty wall areas

Eco-riendly woods. Since green living is a top trend in iterior design, choose eco-riendly bamboo, or borrow romprized designers who use reclaimed wood such as railroadties and pine lengths to customize inventive shelves.

Natural colors. The top hues o shelving pieces includmahogany, cherry wood, espresso and lighter shades such natural, white and silver. Brights may be used in children’srooms, nurseries and now even in kitchens or a pop o colin an all-white or tan space.

The key to perect shelving pieces is precise, level instal-lation, which can be achieved via Pottery Barn’s SimpleMount System, which includes a built-in bubble level orproper placement. The site also oers videos to help youmount your shel pieces right the frst time. A laser level caalso be used to help you install your shelving.

CADILLAC - Chad Boolman alwayswanted a well-lit, warm place where hecould work on his Harley Davidsonmotorcycles.

And now he’s got it - the perfect mancave attached to the back of his garage.Or as he calls it,his ‘hog pen’.

“There’s a ramp right out this back double door andwe can drive the bikes right up it,” Boolman explained.“This is something I’ve always wanted and when welooked at this house we didn’t even see this spot off the

back.”Three years ago Boolman and his wife Keri Powell

were house-hunting. They loved the large white colo-nial with front pillars. And while Keri was checking outthe kitchen Boolman went through a door in the garagethat he thought would open to the back yard.

Instead, it opened into an old shed used to store lawnmowers.

But that’s not what he saw. Boolman immediately sawthe spot or his man cave.

“I opened the door and it was dirty and dingy but theonly thing I saw was the hog pen. The structure was here.”

He hollered up to his wie, telling her to sign the papers. She opened the door to nd him and laughed. “There’s

your hog pen,” she agreed.Working with ellow Harley rider Derek Anderson, it

took the guys about nine months to complete the vision. They created a ceiling, had a heating system installed,

and covered the walls with tongue and groove knotty pine.Next they installed commercial fooring and Boolmanbuilt a work bench, closet and bar area. The trim is paintedbright Harley orange.

Although it’s a long, narrow space, Boolman said it’s theperect size with just enough room or the guys to comeover, have a beer and watch the big screen TV. And there’sroom let over to t at least three Harley’s or warm, win-ter storage.

The room says a lot about Boolman. It’s organized, neatand clean with a mini clothesline over the heater wherehis three children hang wet mittens ater skiing or play-ing outside. There’s a shel packed with Tai Kwon Dotrophies. But the room’s big attraction are the three largebikes, one huge old chopper and in the back corner, twoHarleys. One belongs to Anderson and the other, a 2002FXD Harley Super Glide, is his pride and joy.

Boolman, the manager o Cadillac Tire Center, has owned16 Harleys since he turned 18. He’s loyal to the brand andsaid i he changed bikes, he’d have to change his clothes, histattoo and his entire man cave.

“The thing with Harley is nostalgia,” he said. “Theystarted in 1903 and survived through World War II because

they built or the military. That kept them aoat. They are anAmerican company. Their V-twin, air-cooled motor and thesound o Harley can’t be compared to anything else.”

There are touches o Harley everywhere in his workshop;Harley curtains over the window and a special bar table andstools embossed with the Harley insignia. There are shadowboxes flled with Harley memorabilia, including packs o Harley cigarettes. Then there’s the huge, special editionHarley Davidson, Snap-on tool box o shiny black with or-ange trim. And o in one corner is a Harley 107-inch motoror his next project.

He’s going to build a ‘bobber.’ He said everyone whoknows bikes knows what that is - a chopper with a unique,

vintage look.He pulled out a motorcycle magazine cover rom 1971 to

show what it will look like.“Mine will have a kick start, a black rame and a black

ront en and big metallic ake point - it’s that old retro lookwhat I want to build, chopper style with high handle bars.”

What better way to relieve the stress o a long, hard daythan soaking in a hot tub? Whether in your bathroom

or on your deck, little can beat the warmth and relaxingbenets o a hot tub. It simply has a way o shedding thehassles o a hectic day.

I you’re considering buying and installing a hot tub,it’s smart to have some idea o what is available on themarket and how you plan to use one prior to making yourpurchase. The installation o a hot tub is signicantly morecomplicated than that o your standard bathtub. So i yourbathroom remodeling plans include a hot tub, talk withyour raming contractor, plumber and electrician prior topurchasing one. A hot tub requires additional raming, andthe extra weight o it when lled with water may requirestrengthening o the foor. In addition, a hot tub typicallyrequires larger plumbing supply lines and electricity to

drive the necessary electrical system.Another key consideration is the size and shape o thetub. Hot tubs come in a variety o shapes and sizes. Priorto shopping, write down the measurements or the areayou have reserved or it. Some hot tubs t a rectangularootprint similar to that o a standard tub and are perector mounting on walls, whereas others are oval or circular

in shape. There are even hot tubs that are designed to tinto corners to conserve foor space.

Although most large home improvement centers sell hotubs, you may nd a wider selection and more options by

shopping at a specialty store. A specialty store oten oerinstallation services, as well, and no doubt the people therwill know more about hot tubs than the average employeworking at a home improvement center. Also, they willlikely have better access to replacement parts when thetime comes or making repairs to your hot tub -- whichinevitably will happen. Pumps and motors are moveableparts that over time wear out. When shopping or a hottub, compare warranties. They can vary signicantlybetween manuacturers. The specialty store may also oeits own warranty or installation.

Expect to pay two to three times the cost o a standardbathtub or your hot tub. Also, expect to pay severalhundred dollars more or the installation o the hot tub.

There is simply a lot more work required in installing a htub than there is with a basic bathtub. So go or it. Spend some extra money on that hot tub.

You won’t regret it down the road. Really, there is littlethat can dissolve the day’s headaches and hassles betterthan a hot evening soak in a hot tub.

So you’re thinking about installing a ence in your backyard.Tere are a number o ence types to choose rom today. Whenchoosing a ence to install, you need to consider what the main

reason is or the ence. For example, is it or enclosing a pool, or isit or privacy? Is it or aesthetics or or simply keeping the childrenor pets conned to an area in the backyard? By rst understanding the purpose o the ence, you can then choose the most appropriatestyle ence or your situation.

Aluminum FencesI you want a rugged high-quality ence, an aluminum ence is

your ticket. Aluminum ences are aesthetically very attractive, arehighly corrosion-resistant and are very unctional. Tey won’t rustand are virtually maintenance-ree. In addition, because o how the paint color is applied to the aluminum encing, there is never a

concern o chipping or peeling paint.Aluminum ences are ideal or enclosing pools and or keep-ing in pets. Tey come in numerous styles and designs, so there isa ence type or even the most nicky o ence shoppers. Tey area bit pricey, however, so plan to dish out a little more money thanother ence types.

Wrought-Iron FencesTese days, new wrought-iron ences are ofen used to enclose

pools. Tey’re also more commonly ound encompassing yardso high-end residential property. Besides providing a classic and

sophisticated look, wrought-iron ences are considered heavy-dutences. Consequently, they are ideal or security reasons. Te onlyreal downside with wrought-iron ences, other than the act thatthey are very expensive, is that they can rust over time. As a resultthey need periodic maintenance to keep them looking like new.

Vinyl Fences Vinyl ences are the most commonly installed ence today. Tey

can provide both security and privacy, and they come in various sizstyles and colors. Tey are ofen used today or enclosing pools, pa-tios and backyards. One o the main attributes o vinyl encing is thit is maintenance-ree. It will not weather, rust or ade, though it cacrack i hit hard, particularly i it is hit hard in colder weather. Viny

encing is also the most economical o encing materials, relative tothe other two ence types listed in this article.

So again, beore buying and installing a new ence, rst makesure you know the main purpose o the ence. Afer you’ve come a conclusion on its main purpose, you can then better choose theappropriate ence to install.

Sealing your driveway is an important part inmaintaining an asphalt driveway and extendingthe lie o it. Sealing prevents water rom work-ing its way into surace cracks and underneath theasphalt. Once water gets underneath an asphaltdriveway, it can quickly begin to undermine theintegrity o it. The water can cause erosion, whicheventually will lead to sinkholes in the asphalt. In addition, during winter months, melting snowand ice water can work its way into the asphaltdriveway cracks during the day and then reeze

underneath the driveway when the temperaturesdrop. This situation leads to heaving, settling andeventual crumbling o the driveway. Sealing yourdriveway also prevents weeds growth and protectsit rom oil spills. It also protects the asphalt romthe sun’s ultraviolet rays, which break down thebinding material in the asphalt.

Though you can pay someone hundreds o dollars to seal your driveway, you can easily sealyour own driveway or a raction o the cost withas little as a hal-day’s worth o work. That said, anewly poured asphalt driveway needs three to sixmonths to ully cure prior to sealing it. This allows time

or the hydrocarbon oils in the asphalt to evaporate and theasphalt to ully harden.

Prior to sealing your driveway, make sure to repair anycracks or holes in it by using either a cold patch or an as-phalt driveway crack sealer. Asphalt driveway crack fllersare made rom a synthetic rubber and come in either a tubethat you apply with a caulking gun or in jugs where yousimply pour the fller into the crack or hole. Once you’veapplied the crack fller, allow several weeks or it to ullycure prior to sealing your driveway.

To actually seal your own driveway, you’ll need 5-galloncontainers o coal tar driveway sealer. I recommend buy-ing coal tar driveway sealer over asphalt based sealers due

to the act that coal tar driveway sealer does a better jobo protecting the asphalt rom oil and gasoline spills. Theamount o driveway sealer containers required will dependupon the size o your driveway and the amount o squarearea each container covers. Typically, a 5-gallon containerwill cover 350 to 400 square eet. Calculate the area o your driveway and then divide it by the amount o area

each container can cover. This will determine how manycontainers o driveway seal you’ll need.

Apply the driveway sealer to your asphalt driveway ona warm day so that it spreads easily. To actually spread thdriveway sealer, use a long handle squeegee or broom thais specifcally made or sealing driveways. Prior to actu-ally pouring the driveway sealer onto your driveway, masure to thoroughly stir each container well. Make surewhen applying the driveway sealer that you do not put iton too thick. Otherwise, it might take much longer to curand it would be susceptible to peeling.

Ater sealing your driveway, make sure not to walk ordrive on it or a ew days. Typically, a driveway sealerneeds a couple o warm dry days prior to driving a vehiclon it. I the weather is less than perect, you may need several more days to allow it to properly dry and harden.

Finally, keep in mind that sealing a driveway is not aonce-in-a-lietime event. To ensure a long asphalt drivewlie, you should plan on sealing your driveway every twoto our years.

You’ve seen it on HGTV home remodels: the transor-mation o a basic backyard into a jaw-dropping outdoorroom with an arched-roo pergola housing a ame-ick-ering fre pit table, abulous couches and tables, a state-o-the-art outdoor kitchen and magical lighting illuminatingthe cozy and chic space or gathering amily and riends. Now, more homeowners are designing their own outdoorrooms to give themselves a abulous open-air space in topdesign style.

According to the experts at The Outdoor Greatroom

Co., “the wonderul thing about adding an outdoor greatroom is that the cost per square oot is much less than anyother inside-the-home remodel job.” They also report highreturns o joy rom their investment. The amily can revelin living the good lie via their new, enviable, high styleoutdoor space. Party guests will marvel at the transorma-tion o the corner o the yard that previously oered noth-

ing more than patchy grass during the celebrations andoutdoor amily dinners commencing throughout the year

Aside rom the entertaining perks, a new outdoorroom adds value to the home. According to the AmericanInstitute o Architects, outdoor living is the number onegrowth category in American liestyles, and installing anoutdoor room increases a home’s value by 10 to 20 percenwhich The Outdoor Greatroom Co. says delivers a 100percent return on investment.

To begin your process o designing an outdoor roombrowse Pinterest to gather enticing images, rom theultra-exorbitant to the most simple. Show these to your

proessional designer or outdoor room company stylist.(It is advisable to hire an expert to assess and measure youproperty’s grading and anchoring needs, advise on town-ship codes and suggest the most durable, weather-resistanmaterials or your outdoor room.) A proessional team also makes easy work o installing theroom’s pergola and support beams, which The OutdoorGreatroom Co. says can be “easily installed in less thana day with two people.” However, the ooring may takelonger depending on your need and choice o ooringmaterials. “It is also necessary to do the planning or theelectrical and gas lines i these are to be utilized” or gas frepits, outdoor kitchens and outdoor freplaces. Licensed and

insured proessionals know how and where lines may be runand can handle permit acquisitions tasks or you.

A pergola is the most popular design, with thick sup-port legs holding up the loty beamed roo, in either at orarched design. The legs may be simple beams with decora-tive bases, or you can give your outdoor room a eel o Tus-cany through pedestal-round legs. Overhead, choose roman open beam design or add a latticework layer to increasevisual interest while allowing or wind and rain to passthrough harmlessly. You also need to decide i your struc-ture will be anchored into the ground or raised on a deck.

Choose urniture or comort and style in materialsspecifcally designed or outdoor use. New trends in out-

door urniture include love seats, gliders, coee tables andend tables in addition to the traditional table and chairs set.Adding a cushioned bench seat to one side o your pergolaoutdoor room is also popular. Materials or stylish outdoorurniture sets are resistant to mildew and mold and areoten UV ray resilient to prevent ading. Furniture may beaccessorized with cushions and pillows in complementarycolors such as hunter green or Caribbean blue, to coordinatewith colors existing in your landscaping or pool areas. You

could also choose trendy patterns such as preppy stripes oromantic garden orals.

“Outdoor lighting is an important element or creatingthe perect outdoor living space,” says The Outdoor Greatroom Co. French colonial lanterns add elegance to an out-door room, and the design experts at Restoration Hardwarsuggest grouping several dierent sizes o metal lanterns toadd extra visual appeal. Other lighting eects include light

strung throughout the latticework ceiling or wrap aroundpergola beams, LED or solar lights in pillar candle orm, anlanterns hung rom S-hooks on tree branches around thestructure. Portable light-and-heater fxtures add to the lighing eect while warming up the space on cool evenings.

Speaking o heat, the top trend in outdoor rooms is thegas fre pit table, which is oten a low-set round, square orrectangular table with a clean-burning gas uel eature inthe center, creating a freplace ame eect emerging romcenter-placed clear or colored stones.

Fire pit tables come in contemporary designs such aspolished marble, Lucite and stainless steel details, reectivesuraces, linear burners, innovative graphical or asymmetri

cal patterns, and metallic, stone or modern color designs.Additional outdoor room eatures include an outdoor

freplace or ooted chiminea, an outdoor kitchen with wetbar, a sound system via hidden speakers, a ledge or an iPoddock and potted owers coordinating your outdoor roomwith the landscaping around it, creating a magical and gor-geous space or your amily’s enjoyment.

There were many things that Erin Lang Norris and herhusband were looking orward to when they moved out o anapartment and into their own house in south central Wisconsin.Top on that list was having a yard or building big res to enjoyduring the summer and winter months. But the property theypurchased didn’t have a re pit, so Lang Norris had to take

things into her own hands, literally.“I don’t know how many bottles o ibuproen I went

through,” she says, noting that building the 5-oot-wide re pitwas a eat o will and physical strength.

Lang Norris couldn’t aord a landscape designer, so shewent to the rst place most people do to get more inorma-tion on any do-it-yoursel project: the Internet. She was sorelydisappointed at the lack o concise and helpul material andinstead decided to give it a go hersel.

The rst step was mapping out the space or her re pit.It ended up having a 5-oot diameter, a typical size, says TimLindgren, president o Lindgren Landscape & Irrigation. But you need a lot more space than that to accommodate the

structure.“You’ll have the re pit itsel -- 5-oot outside diameter

-- and then you have three eet o seating all around it. All o a sudden you have an 11-oot space to t a round re pit,”calculates Lindgren. This size was perect or Lang Norris’2-acre plot; the re pit didn’t get lost in the area but also wasn’toverwhelming.

Lang Norris’ biggest challenge, she says, was deciding whatkind o stone she should use. She wanted something durableenough or high temperatures, which can oster brush res, andcold Wisconsin winters. Ater pricing options at the local stoneyard, she picked sandstone and then layered the inside o thepit with rebrick she picked up at the hardware store.

Lindgren suggests that any re pit be made with masonryblocks veneered with bricks, ake stones or real stones on theoutside. This gives the pit the strong structure it needs to with-stand the heat o a re and leaves an aesthetically pleasing viewor the homeowner.

Once the size is sketched out and the stone bought, the

heavy liting and digging begins; this is where the painkill-ers come in handy. How deep you dig your oundation willdepend on the type o soil in which you are digging. Lind-gren, based in Colorado, has to accommodate expansive soilsthat tend to shit structures. The oundation is the area o theground that the stone cylinder will sit on. Ater this area is duout, cement is poured in and rebar stuck into the cement to adstability and strength.

Lang Norris spent many hours chiseling pieces o stone tot into the puzzle o the expansive re pit walls. She careullyplaced each piece exactly where she wanted it, which otentimrequired her to shit the stones rom one space to another, trying to get all o the pieces just right. She then built a top cap othicker stones that went all the way around the cylinder, givinthe structure a nice nished look.

While Lang Norris’ re pit is wood-burning, Lindgrengets many requests or gas re pits. In these cases, his companwould install a valve that runs through the exterior o the walinto the bottom o the pit and capped by a burner system. Lavrocks or glass would cover the burner system but allow thefames to come up.

“The pros to doing a wood-burning re pit is a real famethe smell and crackling o a campre,” Lindgren says. A gas pis easy to manage and maintain. Lindgren even installed a repit that the owner can light using an iPad app.

Lindgren suggests that homeowners check the local codesbeore they start making decisions on the type o re pit theywant. Some areas don’t allow burning rewood in city limits, and i there is a gas line involved, permits must also be in handMessing around with a gas line is no simple undertaking, Lindgren says.

All in all, Lang Norris spent about $450 on her re pitwhile Lindgren’s company, which primarily caters to high-enresidential locations, charges between $3,500 and $4,500 or a

re pit. Both options are viable and in the end, people are gointo gather around it the nished project.

“In Colorado, we are trying to take advantage o theoutdoor living. What can we put outside that will prolong ouseason?” Lindgren asks. Lang Norris knows just the thing.
