Yellowhead Ag Societyto ENCOURAGE improvement in agriculture and
in
QUALITY OF LIFE of persons living in an Agricultural
Community by developing programs, services and
Facilities based on needs in the agricultural
community
Yellowhead Ag Society
The Yellowhead Agricultural Society was formed in 1975 and has been
an integral part of the
community by providing recreational and educational facilities and
events, drawing many non-
locals to the area and helping to aid the local economy. We are
uniquely situated within the
Town of Edson limits.
One of our facilities include an indoor riding arena, which is used
by many Edson and
Yellowhead County residents. Approximately 63% of our visitors are
Yellowhead County/Edson
residents, and 37% are from surrounding jurisdictions (Whitecourt,
Hinton, Drayton Valley,
Edmonton, etc.).
Compared to other nearby arenas in Whitecourt or Thorsby, the Edson
indoor riding arena has
90% utilization, which has become a large problem as our demand is
higher than our
availability to our users.
The facility usage and membership has increased every year and
currently sits at a 700%
increase over the past five years.
Yellowhead Ag Society
The Yellowhead Ag Society owns the land that the current indoor
riding arena resides.
The land has the 80’ x 120’ indoor riding arena, a large outside
arena and rodeo grounds
complete with grandstands, rough stock sorting pens, announcers
booth, and a rodeo office.
We currently have 12 stalls and over 24 pens that we rent out to
users during events and for
many travellers travelling through the Town of Edson as a stop
over.
The YAS rodeo grounds has ample parking and camping space in a
beautiful setting
We have a mobile home that is rented out valued at over
$70,000.00.
The current indoor arena is valued at $866,000.00
The land is a huge asset to YAS and we are currently 100% debt
free.
Current Building
Currently the Yellowhead Ag Society owns a small riding arena with
very limited seating (generates yearly income of
~$35,000.00/year)
Current building is a wood structure 80’ x 120’ (25+ Years
old)
With 250+ members, the arena is used regularly & we have
outgrown it
C-cans are used to store equipment that is used weekly
Without bringing in seating for events, there is seating for approx
30 people
We will continue to use the current building once the new arena is
in
Why do we need a new arena?
Aligns with the YAS Objective
With 250+ members, we have outgrown our small arena
Memberships have grown by over 700% in past 5 years
The arena now has very limited seating so we are unable to hold
large events
Our arena is overbooked and we are not able to accommodate some
groups
We have c-cans to store equipment that is used daily/weekly because
we have no storage inside
Safety becomes an issue when events have multiple contestants and/
or spectators
Current building - No Pottable Water – No Indoor Plumbing
Draw people from Jasper, Hinton, Mayerthorpe, Niton, Wildwood
Evansburg to use our facility
YAS Building Committee Objective
